That would've been my first guess, the corrosion acts as a resistive element and this alone could explain the irregular power consumption... 9 out of 10 times when i see a battery compartment filled with corroded crap, that is going to turn out to be the cause of my problem.

Tried my best to look through so i didn't recomment it but for the thermal paste it's good to clean off the old and put on new mainly because it has already been spread out and when you place the cooler or shield back down there is bare spots/air pockets that reduces the effectiveness and plus usually what the manufacturer puts on there isn't that good. Also for the switch no don't need more then a pea size dot if even that. Hope this helps you understand better, Great video as always!

This was a fantastically relaxing and informative video to watch! Love that you took your time and meticulously went through every possible fix, slowly notching up the difficulty with each successive 'what-if-it's-this' scenario. It was great that you had the other known-good Switch on-hand so that you could test everything from the damaged one to be absolutely certain what worked and what didn't. That's the kind of fastidiousness that I appreciate! You've got yourself a new subscriber, Vince! I'll be on the lookout now for a broken Switch in my area. Might be worth giving it a shot. Will start binge-watching your older vids and I look forward to what's next! Take care!

Vince ,Can i give you some suggestions ? I am no pro but have some experience. For contact cleaner use Deoxit d100 also use a little on oxidation on ribbon cables don't scrub them you have the risk to damage them more. Never try to repair ribbon cables with solder it is a total waste of time . Don't set your solder iron temp higher then 50 °C above the melting point of the solder you use. 300 to 350 is more than enough otherwise you risk damaging the tracks and the parts you try to solder .I see in some of your videos you set your temps to 400 and above no need for that ,same with the heat gun and if you have big groundpads heat the whole board in a oven to a 100°C but first set your solder iron to 100°C and test all the plastic parts that you can't get off like the plastic in the usb socket and the connectors from ribbon cables etc. You have a ultrasonic cleaner use that before trouble shoot for hours ,after cleaning with the ultrasonic flood it with IPA to get rid of the cleaning solution and moisture blow it dry . It is a lot safer than scrubbing .
@AttilaTheHun333333
@AttilaTheHun333333 5 жыл бұрын
Jacksat Good advices overall, but using an ultrasonic cleaner before fault identification is a bad one. This way you minimize the chance to find a fault per visual inspection, which should be the first thing.
@jacksat2252
@jacksat2252 5 жыл бұрын
@@AttilaTheHun333333 100% agree ,but he already did a visual inspection and identified corrosion so instead by scrubbing with IPA and that horrible fibreglass pen and risk more damage especially on delicate flat flex cables with the super thin traces .

@AttilaTheHun333333 5 жыл бұрын
@@jacksat2252 ok fair enough, but you seemed to give generalized advice, not explicitly to this video. You even talked about soldering, but he didn't even touched the iron in this one. So again, seemed to me like you talk in general. I disagree with your opinion to the fiberglass scrubbing pen... it's actually a really gentle way of cleaning such bad oxidation.
@jacksat2252
@jacksat2252 5 жыл бұрын
@@AttilaTheHun333333 It is maybe some generalized advice but i wrote this in the first comment "I see in some of your videos " and i particular refer to the repair on the PS Vita when he charred the pcb trying to get the solder out of that one hole ,just leave in there put the new usb socket in place re melt that solder so the ground pin would snap in place and solder the rest of the pins on lowest heat possible ,would save him a lot of hassle and frustration . He can take this experience to his next projects. This is not criticism but some advise from a 49 year old who can be wrong to but is never too old to learn new things (better not faster ).like your advise on the fiberglas pen. Thank you for that Attila TheHUN. That is what the comments are ,to help each other ,to learn ,but sometimes that is forgotten and comment sections are full of rude shit. Luckily not in this community ,i read nothing but nice and helpful advice or suggestions. Vince keep doing what you are doing. 👍 👍 👍

Yeah and NEVER use lead-free solder - get the real stuff - 60:40 tin/lead rosin core. You can get it easily on ebay cheaper than your local hardware shop will sell you the crappy unleaded stuff. Lead free solder has a higher melting point and a more corrosive flux which effectively adds up to built-in unreliability. Go check out Big Clive to hear his opinions on lead-free solder...

Definitely not trying to say what's 'right', but in my 2 years of professional experience (~6 years 'non-professional') plugging a known liquid damaged electronic into a power source is a usually bad idea. Any remaining liquid inside the device that got shifted around could potentially fry even more surface mount components. I would always immediately disassemble and clean off all of the corrosion, residue, and any remaining liquid.

Isn’t a battery pack a power source?😉
@yeetusdeleetus
@yeetusdeleetus 5 жыл бұрын
@Valt青 The corrosion would still continue since the battery does apply power to the circuit while liquids are present thus potentially harming more ICs or other components. And a battery is indeed capable of starting a fire if it discharges too quickly, e.g. the positive shorts to ground via a corroded capacitor or something, common failure by corrosion.

Nice fix! With water damage, current from The battery will take the shortest distance which is why it causes so much damage. It also corrodes parts as there’s a reaction between current and water which is more than likely why that battery connector was in such bad condition. Also look for discolouration on caps with water damage as this can give you an idea of where issues will be coming from with water damage. And a tip, don’t use metal tools with batteries, if you puncture it they have a very bad habit of catching fire very quickly ( I’ve known people to have fires from these ) . Keep up the great videos!

Your enthusiasm is contagious! I'm glad you managed to fix this Switch - I used to use sticky tape to fix Commodore joy sticks (the same way you did with the volume button) back in the eighties. With liquid ingress, most of the damage and corrosion is caused by the reaction of the minerals dissolved in the liquid with electricity playing a part, causing electrolysis on exposed connectors. In theory, dropping a Switch into completely pure deionized (distilled) water should not cause any damage but I wouldn't just do it to test the theory!

Hi Vince. You make a great job. If you don't know when you want to remove Batteries please don't use heat. Better is to use isopropanol. A little bit between battery and glue , a little bit pull and wait. It will lose the contact from the housing

Brilliant fix, Vince! I certainly hope you at least leave that seller negative feedback. They certainly knew that was liquid damaged! I'm happy you got it going!! You should use a working battery from one of the unrepairable switches to swap around for testing, like TronicsFix does!

Hi Vince. Firstly I really enjoy watching your videos. I did not take the time to scroll through all the comments, but as for removing batteries which are stuck down. Try and add some IPA around the battery to loosen/dissolve some of the adhesive . I use this technique when removing iPhone batteries.

As someone that works with lithium batteries all the time i warn agenst charging those types of batteries after they go below 2 volts per cell. It can cause the battery to go up in flames, Even if you do get them to change they will hold like no power. Not worth it imo

batteries have protection to protect them from overcharge or overdischarge. when the voltage drops a lot the protection circuit disconnect the battery from the power source(to avoid lithium to start burn). thats why massively overdischarged batteries most likely cant be recharged.

They also have temperature sensors too (i was almost blown up by my phone but the battery told the phone "im too hot stop charging me" so the phone said it would stop charging the battery until it was at a safe temperature, it was at about 45% but i left the phone plugged in so it was running from the charger and did not charge anymore until it cooled down to around 35°C)

Hey Vince a tip from one Switch tinkerer to another. If the rails are not working on future units, even tough there is no obvious fault, try replacing the fan. Yes the fan. Somehow the fan is connected to the joycob rails, a defective fan ribbon can hinder the joycon from working in handheld mode

Big CONGRATS to you Vince. So happy for you that your unlucky streak with Switches is over. It does show you though that untampered items are more fixable than the ones that have been opened. Could condensation occur inside a switch if in a cold room and then taken to a warm room and turned on? I remember seeing on some electrical equipment that things need to be left in a room once bought and assume this is the reason.

@vince don't use metal spludger always use plastic on Lith batteries as if you puncture and short two of the sheeted elements inside then you will get magic smoke and you could use acetone in a syringe liga a corner and inject some acetone under the corner just a couple of drips and that should start to eat the glue also heating it up is another way to soften the adhesive. iPhones are the worst lol, love the bids I lost most of my eyesight and I used to be a electronics repair man since I took apart my first TV at 10 years old , learned my first lesson about CRT tubes and high voltage lol.
