When you were measureing the resistance and expecting 200 ohms, that made me think there could be a problem between the layers, so when you turned the unit on and the board heated up, the problem presented itself. 17:03. The tip on resting the iron on the wick and moving the wick is so good!! I always put too much pressure on the wick, and now I will change.

The two SSD chips you "cannot" replace can be replaced, providing they can still be read sufficiently. You need a device to read the raw data from the chip and write it to a "new" chip, obviously for both chips. Yes, they are paired to the board and contain the keys for the APU and the optical drive and such. I don't know if there are any "commercially viable" devices for console repair companies available, but PC3000 software and accompanying hardware can do it. Given the low chance that you can repair a device by copying the suspect SSD chips successfully enough and the amount of time involved, combined with the resale value of a PS5, unless a cheap device (less than US500 dollar) is available, it's not really a viable option.

Errors like this that are random (ie, doesn't happen in the same place / time / sequence) are usually attributable to processor or memory. Essentially it appears to be losing data or access to memory, which leads to memory chips or memory controller (which I assume is in the APU). It could be as simple as bad solder somewhere (it is good for a long time, and then suddenly it isn't) or a fault memory chip, or literally anywhere that data is flowing. So from the disk to the controller, from the controller to the apu, from the apu to the memory, and so on. This may be fixable in the extreme sense, but what would be required is well beyond the value of the part. you put a good try into it, and you spotted the problem fairly well. However, some repairs are outside of the realm of reasonable. Dropping this one like a hot deuce in the woods is about the best you can do.

Soldermask is the (often green) stuff that is on the board from factory that sometimes has letters and symbols printed on it, applied as one of the last manufacturing steps of the board. Parts are put on after the mask is put on. Conformal coating is an optional layer you put over the entire (or relevant parts) of the finished circuit after all components are put on the board. This is done to protect the finished product from "the environment", for instance dirt and liquid. Repairs to the soldermask can be made with (UV) solder mask or conformal coating, whatever you have at hand and prefer for the specific application, everyone has their own preferences and methods.

Recently found your channel, and I've enjoyed going back to the beginning. I'm from an analogue era, but have understood digital from the mid-70s and I've done a lot of basic repairs (even modding X-box controllers for neighbour's lad, numerous fixed to Sky sat boxes, and my own digital kit). I have a range of soldering irons from pin-tips (which don't always transfer enough heat) right through to 100W for stained glass work. I do have a hot-air station, but never trusted it on other people's kit - even for basic reflow. Watching you makes me think I'll try a bit more on some old PC motherboards. Your kit, as described in you comments, is not too different to mine - my diagnostic processes are a bit different (I come from the "never use an ohmmeter on a digital board" school and, although I've used voltage injection to track down faulty components it's very rare unless I have a schematic 🙂) But ONE THING - what flux do you use? Oh - and I'm 75!!

Great vid & content a usual. Just a tip using solder braid that i picked up from Mr Solderfix. Try adding a small drop of flux & solder to your braid before wicking the old solder off the board. Solder sticks to solder easier than solder sticks to the braid. It might reduce the friction damage to the board. Only a suggestion that might work for you. It might be worth a try.
@PericlesBeber2 ай бұрын
Hi Joe, you wasn't wrong when you said solder mask on the board, it's right. Conformal Coating is a extra layer that we apply after the components are assembled to the board to prevent dirt to hurt the board, I work with PCB board design and we call the original layer of protection on the board solder mask. About the video, sad that PS5 after all the work became a no fix. Great work you do as always. Greetings from Brazil.

I'd just like to mention that conformal coating is what companies do when there is an expectation that the PCB might encounter any form of liquid, it isn't the green coating, it's transparent and goes over the top of the green coating (solder mask) and the components that have already been installed onto the PCB.

What you need is a chip sucker, I bought a set of three from da Alibongo place and like a lot of Ali tools, it works brilliantly with the thick one good for big IC's and a little thin one for getting into crevices (oo-er), decent silicone cups and simple construction... I bought mine from one of Ali's "choice" selections where you can pick 3 items and free expedited shipping, 2nd item was an 89p variable 80w soldering iron which I made into a crows beak and a set of 3 printed circuit board rulers with all the SMD sizes and other useful stuff on the board... think the whole lot cost me £6ish.

My understanding is solder mask s applied where you do not want solder to flow. Conformal coating is a laquer appplied after all components are soldered that acts as a light moisture proofing coating.

If you test 1-3 and 2-4, and they both have continuity, then you only need to test one diagonal (you could even test 1-2 or 3-4) to check for cross continuity, because you are essentially measuring two separate wires inside the package.
