Hey Joey, I hope you're well. I'm on the board of directors for a non-profit which repairs, refurbishes and recycles electronics. We have some old iPhones and parts spare. I believe there are a couple of 6's, possibly an iPhone 8, some screens and so on. We don't have time to refurbish them. If they would be useful to you, you can have them free of charge. Please let me know!

Test iPhone 8 to make sure the proximity sensor is still good, make a phone call and cover the proximity sensor with your hand, the screen should be turned off but if the screen doesn't turn off it means the proximity sensor is broken

The blacked out sim thing is because old phones did not have e-sim (meaning without a physical sim inside you will not be able to access it, hence blacked out)

Joey you should look into getting thin plastic cards for battery removal, it’s easier to slide them under the battery and cut through the glue rather than using a spudger which is a bit more stabby than slicy.
@gregthatcher9192 ай бұрын
At least playing cards in a pinch. Anything but metal lol

As someone, who repaired a good chunk of this older Iphones, the best way to pull this tabs, is by removing taptic engine right under the battery. It would give you much needed space to get a good grip on this tabs. Also new tabs if bought somewhere like aliexpress, are much worse, it harden with time and battery become loose inside the case, so just use good double sided tape instead. Cheers
@SearchDenied2 ай бұрын
Yay, the iPhones! Great stuff. As the one that fixes iphones as a hobby I would recommend to ignore pull tabs beneath the battery on the older models as those tabs are too dry for intended way because of time, instead just flood it with IPA and pry (be careful not to use internal parts to pivot prying tool). For the easier removal of the screen: use suction cup, even the simplest one would do, but it has to have some kind of a ring attached so you can pull. Just put it at charging port area and pull until you see a slight gap that can be used to insert plastic pry tool (a guitar pick or slim plastic card would do). If it has a water-dust protection seal you can use heat of course but sometimes just a flood of good old ipa on the edges would work too. Putting a new seal would be a great idea as lots of dust that could get inside of it and the seal would kinda protect from water when it's raining outside and you pick your phone to check time or something.

Been enjoying your videos for a long time now. Very inspiring! Congrats on 100 episodes! Newer iPhones support what are called eSIMs. Allows you to connect to a different network without the use of a physical SIM. Great for traveling to different countries or getting month-to-month services without a contract. That would be why one phone didn't have the menu grayed out while the other did.
@enchantededition68792 ай бұрын
The screen glue is important for long term repair. it also gives an element of shock protection/splash proofing. Many use different products and adhesives . From factory they are pressed or vacuum sealed usually. I'm currently experimenting a product I believe is perfect but only a short way into testing .
@henryyoung71842 ай бұрын
For battery removal on the iPhone 7, remove the haptic engine first. That gives better access to the pull tabs, and a straighter angle for the pull resulting in less chance of them breaking. It's just two screws and the module's electrical connections are sprung pogo pins.
@Jsgarage2702 ай бұрын

The screen adhesive does serve as a water seal and also gives the display a bond to the chassis, which I believe helps to prevent cracking of the display from flex.
@RB-pc7tg2 ай бұрын
The sim holder is easy, it drops on with hot air like anything else. The small, thin boards from apple take heat quickly. Just be careful not to overheat due to plastic in the sim reader and the under filled NAND on the other side, behind it.
@perish1n2 ай бұрын
screws came frim the side of the display , there is a metal heat shield on the back of the display also its important to replace adhesive around the display otherwise dirt and humidity enters phone and usually blurs the front and back cameras make sure to use IPA and cotton swabs to thoroughly clean any residue from an old glue good luck you are doing great for an iphone rookie

Phone repair tech here.The seal around the phones is for water resistance and to help with adhearing the screen to the frame. As long as it has about 80% of the seal would be ok but wouldnt have any water resistance. Replace if you have new seal but will be fine as long as you have most of it.
@andrasszabo73862 ай бұрын
Nice idea, Joey, to fix iPhones :) However, you also need a "tristar chip" tester in case of charging flex/tristar chip issues. And keep in mind that older iPhone screens (the first one is iPhone 7 that is glued)are not glued to the phone chassis. 6S/SE 2016 is still somewhat usable today, but anything below that became collectible. And as for the battery tab, you can heat the backside of the iPhone with a maximum of 100°C to soften the adhesive, or you can use some IPA around the battery to loosen it, as well. I use MG-B7000 LCD glue instead of device-specific adhesive strips.

Hi Joey, loving the videos! To be honest you've done a decent job fixing the iPhones considering you don't normally fix them, i repair phones (iphones, samsung etc) laptops, games consoles, tablets etc as a job if you ever need help with anything you haven't done before. the iphone with the proximity sensor issue, that's just when the screen dims when you put it next to your face on a call The issue you had with the mobile data being greyed out is because newer iphones have e-sims whereas the older iphones don't so it wont be available without a sim inserted.

It'd be nice to see you keep working on them in the future, maybe start looking to buy some broken ones on eBay like you do consoles, and add them to the rotation of stuff you work on in your videos. I've fixed countless phones and tablets and find your videos very entertaining, i feel compelled to help you out. 22:38 you use tapes to just help the screen stick back to the frame. Once an iphone has been opened (as your finding out pretty much all older ones have) theres no hope of them being resealed to water resistant levels. Samsungs require a press to reseal them and i assume Apple process will also require a similar jig tool to restore water resistance.

Nine times out of ten a ‘greyed out ‘ option on Apple devices of that generation means a board fault. You solved it with the pin bending and added solder to a broken connection . Generally speaking in older iPhones a greyed out setting is a board issue.

Glue on the screen was only used after iPhone X I believe, on the 8 the proximity sensor is when you do a call when the phone is on your ear it turns the screen off

"Perfect pull" ... remove the taptic engine and pull tab in a nice straight line and yes the adhesive around the frame for the screen not only adheres the screen to the frame but so helps prevent water/dust from getting into the device and finally the proximity sensor is what makes the screen shut off when you put the phone to your ear when making calls so that you don't touch anything on the screen... if you cover the top of the screen across where the camera is when on a call it should automatically turn the screen off and when you uncover it the screen should come back on

@MattNona2 ай бұрын
Good catch, although I think they only act as a support for the spring mechanism, but I could be wrong.
@MattNona2 ай бұрын
Had to look into it and according to ChatGPT the spring mechanism does more than just provide physical support for the push-push locking mechanism. It ensures that the SIM card is held securely in place against the electrical contacts, allowing the phone to both read data from the SIM and detect its presence. The soldering of this mechanism to the logic board ensures that both the physical and electrical connections are maintained for proper SIM card detection and operation. So You're right, Joey should resolder it or maybe even replace it with a brand new one.

Proximity sensor should turn the screen OFF during calls to avoid accidental touch screen input by your ears etc... (Also it may change the volume of the top speaker..) About the sim: is it possible that the phone is locked to a service provider? If so, the flex software will not detect your sim. (in my country it was pretty usual for older iphones people purchased from mobile service providers and the phones was locked for one or two years to that service only and it was a pita to make it unlock after the contract has been expired. The software (flex) update was sent by apple after the unlock procedure and the phone was needed to be rebooted to replace the flex with the unlocked original.) I am not sure, but maybe it can be such an issue. Anyway, it is nice to see you are trying to fix something different :) Keep it up! Greetings from Hungary.
