Either the writer was stupid or wanted to portray the animals as stupid, despite being given the ability to speak, they actually are posers. They don't know what big word means, but big word will impress girl. Just like yes, that was a fart joke. The "I r a star" is again, portraying these animals as dumb. They made a simple grammar mistake, and we should laugh at them. They are trying to be insightful and spread wisdom, but they are base creatures who have suddenly been given the ability speak without truly comprehending what they are saying. The song is itself a poser. It wanted so desperately to be cute and charming, but instead it came off completely forced and soulless.

other people are saying "that's where all the balls of gas come from" is just a fart joke but its more than that. you have to remember with this movie that they were trying to squeeze in as many references to other Disney movies as they could. so while it was indeed a fart joke, it was also a reference to the fart joke in Lion King. Pumbaa: Hey, Timon, ever wonder what those sparkly dots are up there? [...] Pumbaa: Oh, gee. I always thought they were balls of gas burning billions of miles away. Timon: Pumbaa, with you, everything's gas. That's why it's disconnected from the other lyrics and sounds so unnatural

Yes! Those two words made my teeth grind too. Somehow "front yard" breaks all pretense that it's an old-timey kingdom and just makes it so clear we're only talking to modern suburban American 8-year-olds. Even if you fix the lyrics, it doesn't change that they mean nothing. The song is rotten to the core. The animals aren't characters we met earlier that she has a friendship with. They aren't friends trying to cheer her up, they aren't frenemies pushing against something she's doing - they're plot devices, and terrible ones. This song does nothing to advance the plot, show character, it's not even very fun. Who wouldn't much rather watch Trashing the Camp, Phony King of England, and countless other Disney songs that are just meant to be fun? No, this is not fixed by changing out a few floorboards, we need to tear the whole floor out. Better yet, raze the house and build a new one instead.

Screaming crying. The concept they're trying to talk about is so infantalized and circled around that you literally can't make out the point of the song. Like it'd be so easy to write about stardust and us being made of star stuff and how all of our atoms came through the cosmos and several supernovas to make us. There's a way to write it where you dumb it down for the kids, and there's also a dumb way to write it. They did the other one.

14:34 It _is_ a grammar rule actually, it's called "order of adjectives". Your adjectives all go in a specific order and if it's messed up at all then it sounds wrong. The order is: opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose. "Here's a little fun allegory" is wrong because opinion (fun) is before size (little) Common example: "So you can have a lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knife. But if you mess with that word order in the slightest you'll sound like a maniac."

Like the rule that makes 'tick tock' and 'ding dong' right, but 'dong ding' and 'tock tick' wrong.

This song is just so incredibly vapid. It's hard to place what this song is analogous to in other Disney musicals. Is it really meant to be the showstopper "let's have fun!" number? In that case, the visuals alone make it fall flat. In other Disney songs about having fun, we're getting creative turns of phrase, sometimes the main character trying to escape the singers making for a fun conflict, and then the singers are trying to persuade the MC. Like - Sebastian is trying to convince Ariel how much better it is under the sea. Coda in Brother Bear is pestering Kenai throughout, but we slowly see Kenai warm up - ie, the song has a purpose, showing passage of time and character progression. It gets even worse if you compare the song's message to the "I want songs". Characters sing about very specific desires. They want more out of life, to explore the surface, the great white somewhere, a life outside a cathedral. They want to find their place as a woman, or meet someone who values them for who they are on the inside. But "I'm a star" is like I said, vapid. Basic in the worst sense. It's useless affirmation with no substance. It is very hard not to immediately think of the Incredibles - "they keep coming up with new ways to celebrate mediocrity..." Maybe in an alternate version of the story, something very terrible happens, and Asha just feels super beaten down at this point - what could characters say to her? "You had courage. You care about your family even when others are dismissive." _Specificity._ But no, simply "you're awesome, I'm awesome, everyone is just intrinsically awesome." That barely means anything. It has the usefulness of a friend saying "that's too bad" when something sad happens in your life - or when you create something, and someone says "it's good" with no further comment. I desperately hope this film will get buried in obscurity, that future generations will instead find motivation in much better Disney songs.

I hate all the little comments like "did we just blow your mind" "it'll sink in the morning" "just look at the mushrooms and you'll understand" or like calling it an "allegory" when literally there is no hidden meaning or clever, eye-opening statement to be made. It's just a bunch of words thrown at the wall but they act like they're so clever and so much wiser than you just because you don't understand what they mean. If your message gets more cryptic the more your audience thinks about it, then you failed at delivering a message. It makes me just as mad as "watch out world here I are" Edit: also your cover slaps. I listened to some older Disney songs after this one, and it's just night and day, even the "fun" "pointless" songs have much more of a point, and are actually fun compared to this. Like, "trash in the camp" isn't an amazing one, but it's got some fun creative joining of the sfx and the animation. Under the Sea is a lot of just a bunch of dancing and all, but there's really creative wordplay with the ocean life, and it's got this conflict in that Sebastian is trying to convince Ariel to give up on the human stuff. You can look even to the 2000s, where people tend to agree Disney had some slump movies - and it's like, "Tell Everybody I'm on my way" is a much better fun song than this. Kenai slowly warms up, showing character growth. It's a montage to at least serve the plot purpose of passing time. Even dadgum Home on the Range, a movie so often maligned as bottom tier of the Disney catalogue, is leaps and bounds ahead of this. Slim's Song is just so much more genuinely silly and fun to watch, just for how absurd the premise is. We see Slim's character in it, of how vain he is in boasting about his ability and showing off. We learn absolute nothing from "I'm a star" - in fact I feel like it has done the opposite and made me more confused about what this movie is.

@@WasatchWind Exactly!! I really get the vibe that they're talking to the three year olds in the audience and not at all talking to any actual characters on screen, which is so detrimental to the story, especially when what they're telling the three year olds is all nonsense! No value at all! Might as well be gibberish, it'd have the same effect!! And that idea makes it so, so obvious that the prompt was not to write a musical but a pop album based around a one-dimensional concept of "stars and wishing." Why?! Why would ANYONE want that?! Why would Disney think abandoning the story element of the music completely was the way to go??? At least other Disney songs that were written primarily for pop success like Let It Go were still known for being crucial moments in their movies, that's part of why they were so wildly successful. A complete detour for some terribly written, messageless pop song was never gonna be their next big hit. It confuses and frustrates me to no end
@WasatchWind
@WasatchWind 17 күн бұрын
@@chip8167 And it's pretty insulting to three year olds. Three year olds can pick up a shocking amount of info when you think they aren't paying attention. Moreover, even when they don't fully understand, they _want_ to be watching "big kid" stuff, that's asking them to stretch their mind - it's how they learn, and over repeated viewings, they understand more and more of what makes a movie interesting. Children's entertainment today is in dire straits. In the 90s and 2000s, dozens of great shows, movies, and specialized video games, both for education and just entertainment, were coming out for children. Now it's all been replaced by the confounded iPad and horrendous shovelware. This environment has led companies like Disney to feeling like they can get away with anything. I feel like Disney's desire to chart with their songs though has had the biggest cankering on their musical quality. In the 90s, they would release an alternate remix of the big songs, with less movie specific lyrics, and pop instrumentation. Now Disney just does that with the base song. One great view on this I heard was from the fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, where he recently hypothesized that maybe movies are struggling, for one reason, because they now have to do what books have had to do forever - find some way to market to someone who isn't paying attention to the space. While we used to consistently go to the movies, and could reliably be expected to watch the trailers, and could there get introduced and hence get excited for a new release, now in the age of streaming, companies like Disney can't count on that. So maybe trying to make pop hits is the best they've got - if you get a hit like We don't talk about Bruno, then of course people will go see the movie in theaters... right?

"So your dust... Is my dust?" To answer your question at 13:20, This lyric is meant to be about how everything is made of stardust, so everything has a little bit of "star" in them, which means that "I'm a Star!" is a semi-literal line rather than a metaphor. That's also how the movie ends, with everyone using the stardust they came from and have in them to wish Magnifico away. Not a bad idea for a third act climax and resolution, honestly, but they were really bad at explaining what they meant, and the execution was... Mediocre *at best*.

I’m pretty sure they were referencing the fact that everything is made from stardust but it’s such a convoluted song the message is made incomprehensible. And “We eat the leaves and they eat the sun, so that’s where all the balls of gas come from” is definitely what they’d thought a clever fart joke. The sun is a star, it’s made up of hydrogen and helium, so gas, the sun activates photosynthesis in plants, we eat plants, we fart… 💀 at least that’s what I think it’s meant to say lmao. Again, very confusing lyrics, they truly are just saying random things.

"eloquent dancers" means "linguistically talented dancers". The word they were looking for was elegant. Also, "turns a pine from a seed" doesn't make sense, it should be "grows a pine from a seed". This entire song is a pile of disconnected thoughts and random unrelated words, it makes zero sense at any given point and is generally just terrible. Thank you for suffering through this song over and over to try and make it better.

Tbh, this, "eloquent," and the "here I are" issues of the song literally makes me think no one tried to edit or double-check the draft and just deciding to go to the sing portion. Like... seriously? 5:58 These lyrics are shit but we really are all stars made of the same dust! What is ‘passed down generationally’ are the building blocks of life (our very atoms) that make us who we are, and those are older than our species and our planet themselves! “Look at your wrist, see the blueish veins? The blood flowing through them contains hemoglobin, a protein that has four iron atoms incorporated into its structure. Iron is only naturally produced in one place, it can only be forged in the core of dying stars. Everytime you look at your veins, remember that you are built from, and kept alive by, pieces of stardust.” - vethox
