The answer, apparently, is simply "you're a star!" "Hey, I've been wondering why I just can't figure out what to do-" "You're a star!" "Well my grandfather, he really wants this wish... Why can't he get it?" "He's a star!" "But Magnifico, he's -" "He's a star!!!!" It's all just... so asinine.

@salientspoon2 ай бұрын
@@Im-a-Scorpio Warning, this is a really long rant about this movie that I didn't intend to be so long, but here we are: Paragraph one, style: My only issue with the the movie's appearance was that Asha looks just so.. generic, you know? If you change her hair, or just look at her face, she looks almost exactly like Moana to me. There are so many facial features they could've changed to give Asha her own look but I swear they just reused assets from previous movies for her character. And her dress could have been so much more interesting, we've already had a lot of purples in a similar fashion style, and as much as I love purple, she could have gotten something more unique, like maybe orange to compliment her skin tone, like they'd originally thought about. And I'm sure neither of those things were really up to the animators, so I'm not going to blame them, it just sucks. The actual animation is fine, though they definitely reuse some poses and facial expressions from other movies, which I don't love. Paragraph two, songs: The songs, though.. yikes. I've not even watched the movie in full, just pieces from commentary channels and people fixing the songs. And even I don't find the lyrics good. I don't have a great ear for that all the time, but here? Oof. You can really tell that it was written by subpar pop artists. Like, I'm sorry, but why does This Wish sound SO much like Julia Michaels' Issues to me? Obviously This Wish was written partially by her, but could she not have tried out a different style for this movie? Her songs are always so clunky and worded weirdly. Like, 'cause I've got issues, and one of them is how bad I need you'. And that odd wording might make sense in a modern pop song, I don't know, but in a Disney song? It does NOT. It sounds just so much like something she'd say, rather than what the CHARACTER would say. And that's just showcased throughout every song in this movie. Some of the melodies are great, I honestly really like the hook in This Wish. Paragraph three, the villain: Not to mention that I agree with the 'villain' for the most part-- like, he can't just grant everyone's wishes, it'd be fucking chaos with the consequences. And what about people who have bad/evil wishes? I know that they can't achieve their dreams or whatever after giving over their wishes, but surely the people realize if he only grants 12-14 wishes a year, there's a very low chance that out of everyone in Rosas, they'll be getting their wish granted. And they must notice that people aren't achieving their dreams after giving over their wishes, so they have that knowledge going in. So, honestly.. I kind of agree with Magnifico. ALSO WHY WASN'T AMAYA ON HIS SIDE?? GIVE ME AN EVIL/IMMORAL POWER COUPLE DISNEY I'M BEGGING YOU. If they'd tweaked it so that he was actually evil, and that his wife either already knew, or found out and took his side anyway.. that could've been SO GOOD. They could have had everyone thinking they were benevolent, generous people, Asha could have finally met Magnifico, and her assumptions could have been put down so quickly if he was actually doing wrong. Plus, why'd he trust some random girl he was considering for the job of being his apprentice, so much that he explained how the wishes worked the DAY HE MET HER? I think if they'd known each other previously in some way, it could have really made that moment much more impactful. What she thought she knew about him could've been shattered. Paragraph four, Asha's characterization: And for the love of God, why did Asha have to be so awkward and dorky? As far as I'm aware, she grew up in a normal environment, unlike Rapunzel, Anna, and Mirabel, who all had reasons to be a bit odd. And even Moana had some reason, because she was also a bit different than the other people on her island, so it showed she wasn't fully in sync with them. But normal teenagers like Asha don't act like that and they don't tend to be people's favorite characters because it's not relatable. Paragraph five, general rant: I don't even understand how they got Ariana Debose in here along with Chris Pine, when they're so much better than this movie makes them seem. I feel terrible for them, that this subpar movie is in their iMDB pages. I just hope they got a good paycheck from it at the very least. Did they write this entire movie in three minutes, though? Because it doesn't feel like professional writers actually tried, with the plot, or with the songs. Disney needs to hire better writers, like.. can we get back the people from Encanto? That movie was so good, the plot was impactful and genuine, and RELATABLE. And they need to get Lin back for the songs once he has time, they're always great when he does them. Moana and Encanto both showcase that very well in Disney films, and Hamilton is a masterpiece of a musical with such interesting genres mixed together in a way that works.

14:34 It _is_ a grammar rule actually, it's called "order of adjectives". Your adjectives all go in a specific order and if it's messed up at all then it sounds wrong. The order is: opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose. "Here's a little fun allegory" is wrong because opinion (fun) is before size (little) Common example: "So you can have a lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knife. But if you mess with that word order in the slightest you'll sound like a maniac."

@@ApoIIo_ we don't actually teach it in school, it's so complicated and long that by the time students are at a high enough grade level to handle memorizing the order of it, they already have learned it subconsciously through watching adults speak. Schools just don't bother, unless English isn't your first language. You'd be surprised how many rules aren't taught because of this. Like the rule that makes 'tick tock' and 'ding dong' right, but 'dong ding' and 'tock tick' wrong.

It's just a bunch of words thrown at the wall but they act like they're so clever and so much wiser than you just because you don't understand what they mean. If your message gets more cryptic the more your audience thinks about it, then you failed at delivering a message. It makes me just as mad as "watch out world here I are" Edit: also your cover slaps. I listened to some older Disney songs after this one, and it's just night and day, even the "fun" "pointless" songs have much more of a point, and are actually fun compared to this. Like, "trash in the camp" isn't an amazing one, but it's got some fun creative joining of the sfx and the animation. Under the Sea is a lot of just a bunch of dancing and all, but there's really creative wordplay with the ocean life, and it's got this conflict in that Sebastian is trying to convince Ariel to give up on the human stuff. You can look even to the 2000s, where people tend to agree Disney had some slump movies - and it's like, "Tell Everybody I'm on my way" is a much better fun song than this. Kenai slowly warms up, showing character growth. It's a montage to at least serve the plot purpose of passing time. Even dadgum Home on the Range, a movie so often maligned as bottom tier of the Disney catalogue, is leaps and bounds ahead of this. Slim's Song is just so much more genuinely silly and fun to watch, just for how absurd the premise is. We see Slim's character in it, of how vain he is in boasting about his ability and showing off. We learn absolute nothing from "I'm a star" - in fact I feel like it has done the opposite and made me more confused about what this movie is.
@chip81676 ай бұрын
@@WasatchWind Exactly!! I really get the vibe that they're talking to the three year olds in the audience and not at all talking to any actual characters on screen, which is so detrimental to the story, especially when what they're telling the three year olds is all nonsense! No value at all! Might as well be gibberish, it'd have the same effect!! And that idea makes it so, so obvious that the prompt was not to write a musical but a pop album based around a one-dimensional concept of "stars and wishing." Why?! Why would ANYONE want that?! Why would Disney think abandoning the story element of the music completely was the way to go??? At least other Disney songs that were written primarily for pop success like Let It Go were still known for being crucial moments in their movies, that's part of why they were so wildly successful. A complete detour for some terribly written, messageless pop song was never gonna be their next big hit. It confuses and frustrates me to no end
@WasatchWind6 ай бұрын
@@chip8167 And it's pretty insulting to three year olds. Three year olds can pick up a shocking amount of info when you think they aren't paying attention. Moreover, even when they don't fully understand, they _want_ to be watching "big kid" stuff, that's asking them to stretch their mind - it's how they learn, and over repeated viewings, they understand more and more of what makes a movie interesting. Children's entertainment today is in dire straits. In the 90s and 2000s, dozens of great shows, movies, and specialized video games, both for education and just entertainment, were coming out for children. Now it's all been replaced by the confounded iPad and horrendous shovelware. This environment has led companies like Disney to feeling like they can get away with anything. I feel like Disney's desire to chart with their songs though has had the biggest cankering on their musical quality. In the 90s, they would release an alternate remix of the big songs, with less movie specific lyrics, and pop instrumentation. Now Disney just does that with the base song. One great view on this I heard was from the fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, where he recently hypothesized that maybe movies are struggling, for one reason, because they now have to do what books have had to do forever - find some way to market to someone who isn't paying attention to the space. While we used to consistently go to the movies, and could reliably be expected to watch the trailers, and could there get introduced and hence get excited for a new release, now in the age of streaming, companies like Disney can't count on that. So maybe trying to make pop hits is the best they've got - if you get a hit like We don't talk about Bruno, then of course people will go see the movie in theaters... right?

That's also how the movie ends, with everyone using the stardust they came from and have in them to wish Magnifico away. “I’m a Star” (Jonah’s version) 21:19 Have you ever wondered why you look up at the sky for answers? Or why flowers in the wind are effortless and elegant dancers? Or how the tides in the sea move along to the beat? What’s passed down generationally to him, to her, to you, and to me? And why our eyes all look like microscopic galaxies? Have you ever wondered why you look up at the sky for answers? Well, you don’t have to look too hard Just find that spark inside your heart If you’re tryna figure out just who you are Don’t look far! Don’t be ashamed of all your scars It’s all okay, let down your guard If you really wanna know just who you are You’re a star! Boom! Now I know this must be a lot Well I- Don’t speak, just free your thoughts! In the game of life, we’re all shareholders We glow up like we boutta go solar! See, everything is lookin’ up for us Every one of us Supernova to the brink of something wondrous The world aglow in shades of color all over So get up! Show the world you’re no poser! We eat the leaves, and they eat the sun It’s no mystery where all our soul comes from Hey, you still look like you’re hangin’ on by a strand Just open your mind up and you’ll understand! So your dust, is my dust? What? I don’t fucking know just go along with it Well, you don’t have to look too hard You’re more the sum of all your parts If you’re tryna figure out just who you are You’re a star! Don’t worry if your world goes dark ‘Cause you’ll find home, its not too far If you really wanna know just who you are (This is Patrick!) Here’s a little tree allegory That should be inspiratory You’ve got so much to explore We all have got to write our own story! Don’t look down when skies are stormy ‘Cause your sun will rise in the morning Hope you get this metaphor-y You have got to write your own story! You don’t have to look too hard (Here’s a little tree allegory) It’s been within you from the start (That should be inspiratory) If you’re tryna figure out just who you are (you’ve got so much to explore) We all have got to write our own story! No matter if you’re small or large (Don’t look down when skies are stormy) Just get out there and raise the bar (‘Cause your sun will rise in the morning) If you really wanna know just who you are I’m a star! (I still don’t fucking know what that means) (We got colorful text now!)

So I THINK what the goat means when he says “I’ve known the entire time” isn’t that he knew about all this nonsensical space magic that just randomly started existing, but that he’s just saying he already knew Asha “was a star” before the weird cult of forest creatures who just met her at all told her that.

Screaming crying. The concept they're trying to talk about is so infantalized and circled around that you literally can't make out the point of the song. Like it'd be so easy to write about stardust and us being made of star stuff and how all of our atoms came through the cosmos and several supernovas to make us. There's a way to write it where you dumb it down for the kids, and there's also a dumb way to write it. They did the other one.
@marymystery44275 ай бұрын
Even then I feel like telling kids "The stardust from space helped to make all of us, so in a way we are stars too" isn't that complex of an idea for them to understand. Hell it could even be an interesting conversation for the parents to explain atoms and shit if they had more questions lmao

Normalize NOT dumbing things down for kids in media that is supposed to be family-friendly, kids can also understand more complicated things than we think they can, and it creates movies and shows that are painfully dull and meaningless to watch after like, age 5..
@aaljustaal18905 ай бұрын
@@marymystery4427 Even for those who don't want to explain atoms to their kids, establishing a setting where the world's creation story includes all things deriving from stardust is perfectly reasonable in a fantasy setting where literal magic exists

"eloquent dancers" means "linguistically talented dancers". The word they were looking for was elegant. Also, "turns a pine from a seed" doesn't make sense, it should be "grows a pine from a seed". This entire song is a pile of disconnected thoughts and random unrelated words, it makes zero sense at any given point and is generally just terrible. Thank you for suffering through this song over and over to try and make it better.

I think the point of saying "you're a star" in the movie is that you have the ability to make your wish come true. You don't have to rely on a magic star or magic in general to make ur wish a reality. P.S. Im not saying the OG song is good
@The1nvisibleJeevas6 ай бұрын
