Trying to Flatten Warped Vinyl Records: An Experiment

How can you flatten a warped record if it looks more like a dish than a disk? Roy Unit attempts to find out... and makes some embarrassing mistakes along the way. This is less of a tutorial and more of an experiment in how to repair vinyl.

Live and learn! I think the tile was too uneven of a surface. Too rough. Smoother surface. Lower temperature might work.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think with the heat gun method it would actually work better flipped over so the record is concave, not convex, if you try to flatten a banana shaped object it's likely to curl up than down. This is based on my experience flatting metal with pressure, so obviously it's a bit different, but the theory seems sound still

I wonder if the baking tray method would work better if you were to place the exact setup outside in direct sunlight. So the metal tray would absorb the heat of the sun, and potentially be more consistent than burst heating it, so to speak.

Could work. One issue might be debris or other things disturbing the set up, but it might be worth a shot.

Can you place a thing shroud then a tile over the record and then heat the tile....

80C for 10min in pre heat oven will do the job correctly

My new record has a slight warp that it sits off the platter by maybe a mil and a half. Luckily it doesn't affect sound. Still don't like my needle moving up and down.

Months? It would have to be a pretty rare for me to wait months!

I would've flipped it over before heating it up so more of the weight of the record itself would help to flatten it.

maybe if you heated the tray, or other super flat surface, and pressed in down into the vinyl with some weight, a good 3-4kg+, for a slow, even heat and press. Although, that might squeeze the whole thing too muuch
