really awesome to see the progress! glad i could help out at least a little bit, excited to follow the journey 😀 also i'm always getting added to these fake playlists too, pretty sure i've been added to the ed sheeran one as well. it's super frustrating, and it seems like there isn't much to be done about it unless spotify starts cracking down on it

Arrrgghh, me too. Plus 'Summer Mix'...big boost, then they disappear. Do you think that unintentional bot activity effects the algorithm negatively? Does it raise some red flags for Spotify on your account?

@@TheYellowWallpaperMusic I don’t think it matters at all tbh; I haven’t seen anything happen to me from the random adds. One time after it happening; the song in question ended up on discover weekly so a win was a win I guess, but I have ads running everyday so it didn’t really matter to me

most informative video i've seen on this stuff so far. thanks for sharing. the only question: do you think you'll be able to be profitable from streaming this way? if you're able to breakeven or go positive (financially) this becomes a viable way to share and promote your music. but if you can't breakeven &/or get profitable with ads, then whats the point? if you can, where is the path? is it chasing a viral song? is it a compounding thing - where we run ads for all our songs, and after song 17 (or w/e) we're earning enough from our catalogue to justify the adspend? if you have the money - there's an argument for social proof - but beyond that it feels like an ego play unless i'm making a profit. i couldn't give a shit how many listens i get if i'm paying for them, especially if i'm getting those listens at a financial loss. in the end, we all want the music itself to be enough to garner listens. so, i'd love to hear what you think on if (&/or how) paid ads can create a profitable music streaming business. i'm sure this is on your mind - just sharing where i am on ads for music.

from my limited past experience in the music industry + from what I’ve read up about this: the main ways to make money as an artist are playing shows, selling merch, and direct support like Patreon those all rely on building a fanbase of your music which can be done through these kinds of ads. I’m seeing it as an investment into building a fanbase that will become profitable later on. i believe streaming/ads method would be more profitable (or at least operate at less of a loss) if I had more music out or promoted an album or EP. That way, each new listener from the ad would translate to 5-10 streams the first time they listen and they are able to save multiple songs to their library, etc. Also, this video doesn’t really show the extent that Discover Weekly eventually pushed out my song (my latest video does, it's "how to promote your music / what i wish i knew"). When I turned off the ad I was running, I had 14.9k streams on the song. A combination of people streaming it from their library and Spotify pushing it out to new listeners through DW has taken the song to 59k as I’m writing this. As far as recouping my ad spend, it’s about 36% of the way there. I didn’t really go into this thinking I would immediately get a return on investment from the ads because of how little streaming pays. But 45k streams in 4.5 months since I ran the ad gives me the impression that this song will eventually break even from streaming alone in the future.

@@VarsityBeats that last part is encouraging. i’m not sold that shows and merch/etc are the best way. they are what’s working now - but the industry keeps up - and promoters/“small” venues etc will want their due in time. (this is a common occurrence in economics- once they’re aware of the amount of money they come back to the negotiating table.) tbh i think this is already happening, there’s a reason shows have gotten so expensive… bc promoters who used to do it for free need income/etc. besides - not all artists pine to perform. i’ve observed the artist earning the most JUST from music are doing it through streaming. as an artist who prioritizes the creation of the music above everything else - this feels like the correct way. they are doing it by building highly engaged audiences with loads and loads of content &/or they’re supported by the establishment in one way or another. as an artist i am working to build an engaged community of artists and consumers alike to support my craft. (organically) but as a business man - ideally the ads would be able to drive profitable songs/eps/albums. what i’m wondering with ads: could someone setup a simple $1-10 daily campaign that is designed to never be turned off. you simply add/promote your new releases as you release them. and the roi perhaps comes over 12-24 months - but eventually that pillar of your business is profitable on its own. (this would be quite enabling for artists) essentially the streaming income from previous releases gives us the ad money for the new releases. do you think this is possible?^^^ regardless - keep crushing it.

yo i recently dropped a debut single on spotify and was wondering if i should waste my money and time on a campaign for ads on insta or if i should try tiktok DOPE video so proud of you brotha im looking forward to new music and how this release grows 🔥

My advice right now would be make some tiktoks that include your music, one kind that asks people who your music sounds like and another that asks people if they like your song and play a snippet of your song in the tiktoks. if you do this a few times, you'll start to see how people feel about it and if it would be worth it to spend on ads + you'll feel comfortable getting in front of a camera and saying "if you like music that sounds like X... then you'll like this" and running it as an ad. hope this helps!
