The good thing about Romanian is that it is a phonetic language; meaning that it is spoken almost entirely as it is written. Therefore, if you know how to pronounce the letters of the Romanian alphabet, you can in theory pronounce every word correctly. You may not understand what you are reading but assuming you’re following the rules of the alphabet, it will be the correct pronunciation almost every time. The letters to watch out for in Romanian are these: Ă pronounced like “uh” in “but”. So “fată” (girl) is pronounced “fah-tuh” Â and Î have an identical pronunciation. Unfortunately the sound these letters represent does not have an english equivalent, but if you see something like “îmi place” (I like), just try to ignore the Î and pronounce a forced “m” like ‘mi place. Or another example be (în mare) (in the sea). Try to pronounce just a forced “n” (‘n mare). Ț is like “ts” in english so “piața” is like “piatsa” (square/plaza). Ș is like “sh” in engli(sh). Pretty straightforward. The digraph CE/CI would make a “ch” sound in english. CHE/CHI would make a hard k sound in English like ke/ki. The digraphs GE/GI is pronounced like “ge” in “germ” or “Ji” in “Jim”. GHE/GHI is pronounced with a hard g like “ge” in english “get”. The rest of the letters are pronounced as you would assume. There are some other rules regarding the pronunciation of “i” at the end of words but I won’t get into that so as not to confuse you.

@@EllaSlingsby Very nice :) You can try also Google translate from English to Romanian and click on the speaker icon for the pronunciation- it's very good. When listening to people, like on youtube and so on, the don't always pronounce in the "cleanest" manner. In principle, the pronunciation is phonetical, but there are a few complications, around the ce/ci/ge/gi vs. che/chi/ghe/ghi, which are pronounced like in Italian, then the vowel i at the end of the words which is usually very short when preceded by a consonant, then the diphtongs oa, ua, etc and triphthongs like eau, ioa, uea (three vowel combinations) which are partly "fused" in pronunciation, even more so when speaking fast... If you master the vowels then your pronunciation will be perfect! :D

The problem is there are some people on the internet that pronounce the letters of the Romanian alphabet wrong, in the so-called "let's learn" videos. Also, Romanians themselves have two ways of pronouncing the letters, one of which is with the „î” /ɨ/ sound at the end. Like b/ɨ/ , c/ɨ/, d/ɨ/ instead of b/ˈiː/,c/ˈiː/, d/ˈiː/

Agree especially about that ,,Lay'' :D That's how it sounds when we (romanians) say (the number / amount of) ,,Lei''. 5 lei, 10 lei, 100 lei, 1000 lei (all plural.. more than 1 leu). Btw.. Leu or Lei has another meaning in romanian language too. Leu is also the name for the animal called LION (or Lei = Lions) / So it ain't just or only for the romanian money.. we call the Lion / Leu too :D

Started listening to Carla's Dreams and wanted to understand the lyrics. Ended up going to see them in London at the O2 arena - me and 5999 Romanians! It was so cool singing along but learning to pronounce "Și-aș vrea să-mbătrânim în doi" nearly killed me. I am also fascinated by languages and speak French which helps a lot.

This is so satisfying to watch.I am quite amazed, to see the determination you have. One little tip maybe: The pronunciation of the letters in the alphabetical order is not always the same as we use them in complete words. We put some vocals at the end or at the beginning of the actual letters, to make them sound more pleasant, but when we use them in words, we do not read read the entire part, only the main letter...., You usually read ("A", "Be", "Ce", "De", "E", "Ef", "Ge", "Hash" etc. for the letters A, b, c, d, e, f, g & h and so on. But putting the same letters into words will have slight phonetical changes. For example: We say București, Carpați, Dunărea, etc. not (as an example, "Be"-ucurești, "Ce"-arpați or "De"-unărea) Nevertheless you are doing quite well & your video really shows that. As a half Romanian, I am always amazed to see people from other countries interested in our culture.

That first tutorial video you've watched it's a pretty bad one. When she said G it sounded like D, when in fact, it should've sounded something like "Ge" as in GEneration. Also, I understand your confusion when she said BE instead of B. The thing is you have to keep in mind that when using letters in Romanian words they don't have that "e" sound in the end. It's kinda like you say the letter "M" in English. When you say M it comes out like "EM", but when you use it in a word it just sounds like "M". I hope that makes sense. The thing is, in Romanian, letters can sound in only one way, with some small exceptions in the case of the CE, CHE, CI, CHI, GE, GHE, GI and GHI constructions. Those are the only cases when letters sound different than usually. Basically, if you learn how letters sound, you will be able to read anything in Romanian, because they will always sound the same unlike in English where the letter E, for example, can sound in 3 different ways, which can be very confusing for English learners. EDIT: You're doing surprisingly well!

You just kept getting better and better by the end of the video! You came a long way into pronouncing "multumesc" flawlessly - you simply sound like a native now. I remember you used to say it like muhl-tzuh-mesk because of your english accent but now it's the way it's supposed to be. I want to point out the words you say perfectly, that don't need any practice: buna ziua, buna seara, cum va numiti. The only things that need correcting are the vowels and a few grouped consonants. So, the letter A is pronounced like "ah" and not "uh", letter U is "oo" and not "yew", letter Ă is "uh" so it is the opposite of A. In the examples you gave, you said nouă like no-ah but it is no-uh. You have an RP English accent so words that start with T sound like "tch" as in Tuesday (tchoos-day) so the way you said "pentru" is not pen-tchroo. Try saying it like pen-through and it's much better. Good luck on learning romanian :)

As a Romanian, I *really* appreciate the fact that you took the time to learn this language! You're doing a wonderful job! And when you said: 'Romanian este dificilă' I was there just nodding my head in approval😂 I can only imagine how difficult it must be for others to learn romanian! The 'r' is something even we, romanians, struggled to pronounce at some point. My mom always told me to repeat the sentence: 'Râu, rățiușcă, rămurică; Rică nu știa să zică: râu, rățiușcă, rămurică' (=river, little duck, branch; Rică didn't know how to say: river, little duck, branch) until i got it right.😂 So good luck! *Well done! Well done! There are just a few letters you overshot and must keep working on them.* 1. Letters C and G taken separatedly do not make a "ts" and "dz" sound, but a "tch" and "J" sound. Also, they only make this sound before E and I (ce, ci, ge, gi), while they make a simple K and G sound anywhere else. 2. Letters  and Î both make the same sound. To help you out, just say the first vowel in the word "America", then move your tongue up a bit. Make sure that your tongue leaves very little space in your mouth. If done correctly, you should have the proper  and Î sound. 3. You keep getting the letter Ă wrong. You keep pronouncing it as A, but that's not the case. To help you out, just say "uh" and that's it! It's a low vowel, also known as the *mid central unrounded vowel* or *schwa.* To make things better, this sound also exists in normal English, unlike the sound  and Î. Yay! 4. The only difference between the English R and the Romanian R is that the Romanian R is pronounced with the tongue closer to the front of the mouth. It sounds somewhat like a motor if we can say so. Lol! 5. Letter Ș never makes a simple S sound! Nope! Always try to pronounce it as "sh"! I'm seeing you overshot it a few times. Keep working a bit on that one! *Bonus:* It is perfectly normal to say "cald" for "hot" and "rece" for "cold" in Romanian. This kind of situation occurs in many languages and it is called a _false friend._ You might think "cald" means "cold", but it actually means "hot". "Rece" is the word that means "cold". Therefore, be careful to not mess with these two words by accident! 🇬🇧 Hot Cold ⬇️ ⬇️ 🇷🇴 Cald Rece *Other than that, you did a pretty good job and you really should continue! You're doing very well!*

You made me remember when I went to work in Romania and started speaking Romanian, for an Italian it is easier on one side but more difficult on the other, we have similar words that mean totally different things. I solved it by combining jokes with learning the language:one day i went in a hardware store and I was worried that I had asked the right thing, I did not know if I had asked for a hammer or a shepherd, from there, the saleswoman and I are laughed so hard that I looked up the words in the dictionary that way and learned the differences in the language .. just for a laugh look in the dictionary: hammer, shepherd, bone. and if it's not enough to make you smile, look for: square, ice, nausea, fog, life. Ask to a Romanian friend translate you: "what a beautiful moon" and "it's been a good month". However, at the beginning basic words such as right, left, forward, backward and the things to ask for food as well as knowing how to thank. I fell in love with romania and I hope you can have a fantastic experience.

Quick tip: whenever you see a vowel, add an imaginary "h" after it. Like, ah, eh, ih, oh, uh. Like, for "house", "casă", imagine it's spelled "cah-sah". I know it's quite hard with the other ones, like ă, â, î, especially the last two ones - â and î, which are actually the same sound but are spelled differently and they don't sound neither like i nor a, but more like "uh" :) Have fun.

I am a native romanian . We pronounce things like We write them . If there is " Apa " We will pronounce IT "apa" . At the letters : "A , E , I , O , U , Ă , ,Î " We do not add any sounds to help us speak . But , for example , " B " can sound like "Be " Or like "Bâ"/"Bî".

Imo, one of the most important things to learn straight away is how to perfectly pronounce things. One common thing that I see is that 99% of the foreigners fluent in Romanian still can't pronounce ă/î(â)/ș/ț. Another thing, when learning vocabulary and expressions, start analyzing what each word means. Ex: Vorbiți engleză/a (they are interchangeable, one means English and the other one means the English)? •Vorbiți= you (plural or polite form) speak •Romanian often omits the subject, so I recommend you get used to not saying the subject since it often sounds weird. •You don't need to add any word for a plain question, so simply add a question mark (Vorbiți engleză/a = you speak English -> Vorbiți engleză/a? = do you speak English?)

Can you provide a source? Or is just "Google scientist stuff "? Yes the Romanian vocabulary words are very comprehensive with many meaningful because inherited a lot of from Latin ,French etc . French and a few another languages had same amount and above . The ideea is to find first the most used 200 words in daily use and to forget about "grammar " rules. Those are the more frustrating things when you learn languages. Learn like children do and don't be intimidated about mispronunciation . French , English,Spanish,Italian , Portuguese ,Romanian require about linqvist appreciation about 500 hours of study. German ,Russian etc over 700 hours. Chinese over 1200 hours of studying. Etc,etc. The ideea is to practice every day at least 30 minutes . A short list with 10 words /day (phonetically transcription help tremendously). I am learning Thai language right now ,by the way. "Nice to meet you" is "îmi pare bine să te cunosc", but we shorten it to "îmi pare bine". For someone learning the language, I think it's important to know both versions. The letters which are most difficult to learn to use are aA (ah without the H) "ăĂ" (ugh without the H, but slightly higher tone), "îÎ" (like a lower-tone "a", lower tone than even "ă") "âÂ" (like "î", we literally sometimes call it "î din a", and call the other one "î din i" in romanian), "șȘ" (shhh or sch), "țȚ" (tsk, or ts, or tz, or clicking your tongue), "wW" (we call it double-V in romanian, because romanian is a latin language, and latin didn't have U, it had V which was spelled like U), "yY" (we call it Y-greek, in romanian), and "rR" (pirate-like arrrr without the A, and maybe lower tone). For spelling "foarte", you need to practice the R letter. English is a lighter-sounding language, as in it focuses a lot more on vowels, while Romanian is a heavier-sounding language, so it focuses more on consonants. Not as many as some other languages, but still more than english. I just thought of this, but a good word to try spelling is "scoarță", because it has the "a", "r", "ț", and "ă" which are hard for english speakers to spell. I'm sure you can find a few more such words, to help you learn how to properly spell most if not all the letters. Also, do know that you can watch english videos with auto-translated subtitles in romanian, romanian videos with subtitles, and even romanian videos with auto-translated subtitles in english, on KZbin. In english "18" is "eight-teen", in romanian it's "sapte-spra-zece", with the "spra" being an older variant of "spre" (to), which translates as seven-to-ten". From 21 onwards, we change just like in english, so we call 21 as "doua-zeci-si-unu" (twenty-and-1), or "doua-ș-unu" (the ș (sch) being from "și" which means "and", and "doua" being the number 2 which has both the male form "doi" and the female form "doua", or "doua-zeci-si-una" because the number 1 has the male form "unu" and the female form "una"). And feel free to use google translate to spell words and sentences for you fairly accurately.

your pronounciation is alright. The only think I noticed is that you still tend to pronounce 'Ă' as 'A'. If you'd make that 'uhhh' your pronounciation would be pretty much bang on. Eg: PiațĂ , ȘcoalĂ; Also you need to get used to the grunting (AKA, the letter Â/Î ), that one should feel like the "i" (eee) but move the tip of the tongue from touching the teeth to further back and make the same sound while projecting the sound more towards the back of the mouth: î/â will naturally come out!
