The demo of I/me/myself has one of my favorite lines that didn’t make it to the album which is “lately I’ve been wishing i were 5 foot 5, weighing 99, wearing thigh highs” just because of the way it is sung live so you should look up a live performance of the demo. Also at the end of that verse he says “my pronouns aren’t your business” which was also changed

i've always loved i/me/myself because of how much it resonated with me. i'm comfortable with how i perceive myself, but when others perceive me, i'm less certain. and i think he represents that well by saying he'd prefer the pronouns i/me/myself, yknow? the only person he feels will understand him is himself, so only he should get to talk about himself. like "i don't think that i want anyone else needs to talk about me and i don't think anyone else will understand my gender so it feels easier to let me be the only one to talk about myself." idk if this is just me and my awful social anxiety, or if this made no sense, but i adore that this is something that other people understand.

Okay, last spam of comments Dr sunshine is very much about him coming to terms with changing who he is. The whole self-ish album is about that tbh. Dr sunshine comes from the character he adopted for his earlier band a verbal equinox. He also used jimmy mushroom, who's mentioned in another song on the same album. At the time of self-ish, will was... Sort of sober? He was doing a lot better, at least, learning about who he was now and what that meant. The album comes to a beautiful conclusion about that on - ish, I suggest you give it a listen, but only after you've listened to *the hits* The normal album, from where black box and love me normally come from as well as I me myself, is about dealing with therepy. Will is *usually accidently* super open about his cluster b borderline personality disorder, and a lot of the songs on the album are about that and therepy in general. (I suggest marsha, thankk you for the dialectics but I think you should leave. No, the double k isn't a typo. No we don't know why it's like that)

BlackBoxWarrior is my favorite Will Wood song for sure. Maybe not by a lot but still. There are just so many great lines in there. After like 2 seconds of Google searching I have determined that Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare infectious disease that is sometimes the result of an allergic reaction to medical treatment. He also says "panic-attacked, anaphylactic and ataxic". Anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction. What he is saying with this line is that the patient died because his treatment did not work, which is a major theme throughout the song (although not necessarily with respect to physical health/medicine, more like psychology and mental therapy). And the intensity of those last few verses is incredible, and has some great lines. "Wine to rev your motor function", "Boy, he really is defective", "Offer up your innocence, please ignore the side-effects". Also in that little monologue he says "My hope is to assess through my objective report of your subjective conjecture" which is just a fantastic line in every respect. 10/10 song in my eyes, probably one of my favorite songs of all time.

this was actually a very nuanced point of view that he has on music, and I'm really glad he picks up on the serious themes in will's music. I've seen other people react to his music and only view it as quirky and chaotic, when its reality is so much more interesting.

I'm currently questioning my gender identity, I've been doing so for the last year, and I/Me/Myself helps explain a lot of it. It's all like, 'I don't like these parts about myself, so I might be this, but wait I do like these parts, so I might be this, but what if I just think I can't be these things because of my gender assigned at birth, so it's all ok and I'm really just the thing I was told I was when I was a baby??' It's confusing, it's complicated, and it's tiring. I wish I was just what I was born as because it just seems so easier. But that song is a nice mix of all the emotions, and how no matter what I end up identifying as, I'll still be me and I can dress and act and exist however I want to when I get there. fun fact - will wood wrote the song when he went through his own period of questioning his gender and while he's still and always have been a guy, he understands the struggles trans and non binary go through while figuring out who they are

I think your take on I/Me/Myself was perfectly valid! At least for me that's what the song always seemed to be about and as a nonbinary person I relate to it so, so much. Other people's expectations for you when you start experimenting with gender is one of the hardest parts for me. I have no idea what I want yet, I'm still pretty young and things like this take so much time yet I feel like most people I've come out to now expect me to act a certain way or do certain things with my body or clothes and it makes the whole thing just so much harder because I feel like every thing I experiment with is immediately set into stone and people won't understand that I was experimenting and that I still like a lot of things associated with the gender I was assigned at birth but that I absolutely despise others. It's a complicated topic but to me at least, you're interpretation made perfect sense and showed me why exactly I love that song as much as I do!

Ok now seriously (but really, you should): - Cicada Days - The Song with Five Names - Marsha, Thankk You for the Dialetics, but I Need You to Leave - Against the Kitchen Floor - Front Street [[ my favorite Will Wood song ]] - That's Enough, Let's Get You Home. - I / Me / Myself - Willard! I WOULD suggest "Tomcat Disposables" and "Euthanasia", but these songs are very sad, especially if you know the context behind them. You can listen to them, but do so at your own risk.

I am absolutely in LOVE with Will Wood! All of his music is fantastic but The Normal Album is definitely in my top 10 of all time! Thank you for making this video and I'm so happy you liked him! Btw those were his girlfriend's rats and they were safe

I spend a good deal of time listening to Will's music, and have since 2019. Still, I feel like a lot of the concepts in these songs that take most people a couple of listens to work through come so easily, even if they aren't fully polished by context or knowledge of terminology. I think watching this video has allowed me to reflect even more on why Will Wood is one of my favorites- and to reflect on how the themes in these songs connect to my and many others lives. And hey, I'm only 14 minutes in.

You have so many good takes! I love how deeply you analyze songs and make sense of lyrics that on a surface level seem abstract--BlackBoxWarrior is one of my favorite songs, but I never really had any idea what it meant. If you do a part 2 of this, here are some songs I'd highly recommend! (Will Wood is known for having long song titles, as you can probably tell) - Marsha, Thankk You for the Dialetics, but I Need You to Leave. - ...well, better than the alternative - Suburbia Overture / Greetings from Mary Bell Township! / (Vampire) Culture / Love Me, Normally - Memento Mori: the most important thing in the world - Lysergide Daydream - "Self-" and "-ish" (both songs together, as they're sort of a two-part deal)

@@thethirdbill The "Love Me, Normally" in Suburbia Overture is different from the standalone song "Love, Me Normally" - I guess it's the placement of the comma that differentiates the two. I understand the confusion, haha! ^^

I love seeing people talking about the ideas behind will wood's music! blackboxwarrior is a favourite of mine lyrically both in musical skill and themes so I'm really glad you listened to it. Just learning what the title means was hugely revealing to me - "black box warning" is one of the terms used for labels put on medications that have severe side effects, up to and including death.

Oh my god I can’t believe I never saw this when it came out… back when I watched your videos religiously (not saying I don’t adore your content, just that I’m a lot busier) I would’ve lost it for a Will Wood reaction. Your analysis has so much care to it, and you bring up a lot of ideas I hadn’t thought of after all of my listens. Dr. Sunshine was a song that’s been a mystery to me despite it being one of my favorites, but everything you said about it just made so much sense… if you had the context of Dr. Sunshine being a past stage name of Will Wood’s, it all comes together. I was lucky enough to see him live on his last tour (it was 18+ and the day after I turned 18, so when I say lucky I mean it!) and it was such a good time. On stage, he’s so charismatic and funny (even when members of the crowd were… not) and the whole experience made me love his music a whole lot more. I respect a guy who’s just fucking around making weird cool sounds and screaming his heart out! (also, don’t worry about overstepping with your ideas about the last song. I’m a trans man and I think it was so well said. Some of the some points vis-à-vis gender roles and expectations being recreated even among trans and nonbinary people resonated with me a good deal, with some past experiences I’ve had among other trans people. Maybe that’s not what you meant but it was all still great)
