Thanks. Beautiful. There are so many reaction videos to Bo’s film/special/album/exercise in self-torment and it makes me so happy to see how deeply he’s impacted so many people. He’s a genius, yeah yeah, fifty years from now this will be on the same short list of earth-shattering movies with “Citizen Kane”, “Casablanca”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “Good Burger” etc. But, I think, what’s far more important than the staggering accomplishment we’ve just witnessed is the extraordinary benefit that’s come in its wake which is that people are talking. We’re talking about the human condition, we’re talking about existential dread, we’re talking about how to frame your IG post so you can maximize likes. Public discourse has been raised from Grade A poopy-kaka to something that might actually get us off the dime. Soooo… “Get yer fuck’n hands up, get on out of yer seats.”

Spoilers for end: The ending, with him banging on door, and everyone laughing just gives me horrible chills and makes my eyes water. The idea of finally getting out, only to regret it and not have the option to go back, meanwhile everyone is laughing at your panic as though youre joking... I dont know *why* i relate to it so well, but it makes my stomach drop.

There was a podcast I listened to where bo talked about being very happy with the level of fame he has and not wanting to have more. And how he never really gets recognized on the street. And now with the success of inside, that visual of him stuck outside on display and not able to get back in just hits harder. Especially seeing all over social media people getting pictures with him and running into him on the street (someone even snuck a video of him having a heated cell phone convo outside a coffee shop and you could tell he realized he was being filmed half way through). I’m so thankful we got Inside but really feel bad he basically sacrificed his anonymity to give it to us (I’m sure he had no idea it would blow up this much).

@@crycrywolf Oh no. That makes me feel bad for hyping it. When I watched it the first I'm I promised myself I wouldn't talk about it. But since it's already become insanely popular, I thought there's not harm at this point. I just don't know how to protect people from fame. It's like, literally impossible to do anything about it once the ball starts rolling. That level of lack of control seems terrifying. I was told that you shouldn't become famous unless you are an attention-seeking personality type, otherwise it's not worth it.

I think That Funny Feeling is describing Bo's anxiety and existential dread. He starts by apologising for being bad when everyone already knows he can play and sing. The the lyrics show how when you're suffering with anxiety, almost any kind of thoughts can trigger "that funny feeling" whether they're about how fucked up the world is or just trying to get through a normal day. Having loving parents and a fun childhood doesn't protect you from developing mental illness in adulthood, and it makes you look forward to the end. Anyone with anxiety knows that funny feeling, when your stomach knots and your heart races but often you aren't even exactly sure what the cause it. Sometimes it's nothing and sometimes it's just everything. If you've experienced it, Mathew, I'd imagine you started feeling emotional because he's hitting those beats whether you consciously realised it at the time or not.

well yes but... Isn't it what we do with most of art masterpieces? If you think at (for example) writters, they are the group with more cases of depression and mostly all the great literature books come from persons who struggled a lot with life, even killing themselves. Sooo I wouldn't find to strange to applaud a piece of art borned in a mental breakdown and reflecting it. But your point is quite true still.

I get you and I kind of get that vibe from reaction videos taking the songs out of context, especially given Burnham's send up of reaction videos (which I haven't seen anyone react to...meta of the meta of the meta...it's turtles all the way down apparently). I am not here for the idea that mental illness is part of genius or artistic expression. I think to do something new or compelling you have to experience the world differently and/or filter it differently and I can see that also predisposing people to problems like mental illness and addiction. But that's a correlation, a common cause leading to two different unrelated things, artistry and mental illness. In fact things like depression and some addictions are probably terrible for artistic expression and ruin talent and more importantly lives.

Same. I kinda felt like it was his way of saying "I was ready, damnit! I was ready to get back onstage! Well fuck this, and fuck quarantine, you're the audience and I'm the performer, watch me and clap for me because here we go" I think that's why he was angry when he said stand up, and why he's so insistent on getting attention in the lyrics. He normally hates attention, but he did so much work getting over his fear that he didn't want it to go to waste.

That Funny Feeling: "The quiet comprehending of the ending of it all." All Eyes on Me: "You say the world is ending, honey, it already did." Goodbye: "So this is how it ends, I promise I'll never go outside again." The song that pushed me over the edge was the "possible ending song" where you get to the- "Well well looks whos inside again." And Bo is just naked in a chair and the words seem equaling shaming and mocking. Like well well look whos inside again said you would get better- just picking away at the person, putting a spot light on them. I don't think i even composed myself for the ending where people laugh at his break down. It really leaves you raw- and to anyone reading this who it didn't feel that way for you. Thats fine as well.

Wish I could watch the whole thing but alas, I'm too poor currently for streaming services. And if that isn't the most millennial damn thing... Turning 30 in lock down was suuuuuper fun. This is an anthem of our generation.

I started crying during "Look who's inside again" and just didn't stop till the whole show ends. It hit me so hard that in the end I spent half an hour staring at the television screen with no reaction. I was just crying not knowing exactly why but feeling really really sad.

Honestly the best reaction to the special. Sure we didn't have a precise reaction to everything, but this was so genuine and I loved that, "I don't know how to react to this on camera" is really the most accurate sentence because I don't know how I would have reacted if I was on camera ;)

The laughter at the end (right before any day now) in my opinion makes me think of when people laughed at him singing art is dead. I felt so bad for him :(

Don't feel bad. He put it in the middle of a comedy act on purpose to throw people for a loop. Sort of like "haha, I've got you eating out of my hand, time for some real shit". The laugher dies down over time and that's the reaction he wanted.

I watched this special during a really, really dark moment in my life. Exactly, every thing in this special was what I was going through, a lot of suicidal ideations as well. I was quickly spiraling and crashing down mentally and getting worse and worse by the minute. Watching this made me ball my eyes out... I didn’t know how to react. It’s like being hit by a train after being hit by a truck. It was something I couldn’t get out of my head since I’ve always talked about how screwed up everything is and people would just look at me with a funny face like I’m the crazy one. And I finally get this epiphany of “oh my god, I’m NOT crazy...” and that’s a very emotional moment. You are completely human for feeling that Mathew. I’m glad you took the time and patience and mental fortitude to sit through this special and give your reaction throughout, because I know how stressful, emotional, and difficult this journey really is.

I'm weirdly glad about your reaction to "All eyes on me". This song hit me so much, I listened to it for several days straight. And I mean literally no other songs in between, just this one. And while I didn't tear up on the outside, it wounded me deeply on the inside. (no pun intended)

I'm still not too sure why myself, but All Eyes On Me also made me cry on my first watch. I think it's the combination of his breakdown just before it, his history with anxiety, how beautiful and profound the music and visuals are, the list goes on. Definitely my favourite track of the special.

i didnt cry during inside, BUT. i almost went into a panic attack and......... i dont mind it. i dove deeeep into my own depressed head for the rest of the special. it was... a lot. i would fully say i was triggered (in the un-ironic sense). it felt so real and so true to what ive been and are experiencing, it was overwhelming. it brought up terrible thoughts and ultimately it was liberating to just sit 'inside' my own head and to 'share' that time with this recording of bo, another depressed person. just me and my screen, him and his camera.

Can I just say, real quick, as someone who just so happened to come across this video (keeping in mind that I don’t typically like reaction videos) - your message after 30 was one of the most important things that I’ve needed to hear. I’ve always been very afraid of the future. I’m 27 and have spent my entire twenties fearing 30. So much so that (to quote Bo) “that funny feeling” has been ever present throughout. I haven’t even seen anything else on your channel but if this is a message that I hear halfway throughout a video of yours that I accidentally stumble upon, then I feel like you’re a really good person and I hope that it’s true. Subscribed.

I really enjoyed this approach to a long form content reaction and I’ve never seen it before. Many people who are watching these reactions have seen the content/special and are interested in seeing someone else’s take on it. Your approach of condensing it to your meaningful commentary, while we know that you are watching the entire special, is super unique and I really enjoyed it. Thanks!

watching inside gave me words to describe what i had felt before. he talks about derealisation/depersonalisation. a couple of months ago i would go through times where i felt like my body was a marionette and i was actually behind and above the back of my head, puppeteering. on top of that, i felt like the puppet was walking around a fog world with fog people. I had never had the words but after finding out that it's a real thing that happens to people i felt a whole lot better. i owe Bo, which is strange.

No one can dare call Bo just a comedian after this special. "Make Happy" really cemented him as one of the greatest to ever do it, but "Inside" just completely shot him up into the stratosphere. I feel like calling him an "entertainer" is a huge disservice to what he actually is.. I can't put my finger on it, is he a poet? Nah, he's more than a poet.. Being left at a loss for words is literally how i felt after watching this special. I hope he knows how much it meant for people who related to this masterpiece.
