Trying to Start a Detroit Diesel 3-53 for the First Time [Dynahoe 160 Part 2]

After doing a full out-of-frame rebuild, I attempt to start the Detroit Diesel 3-53 engine in my Dynahoe 160 backhoe for the first time. Before I can start it, I have to check the fuel system, add oil and fuel filters, and install the radiator and the transmission/hydraulic cooler.

My dad and I rebuilt one of these engines. We called it an "In Frame Overhaul". This engine spent it's life running water pump in a gravel pit. This engine ran full throttle 24/7 for seven years, no real maintenance. It was only shut down so it wouldn't break down.

Had one in a HEMTT back in the day that ran away. Man alive, that was a sight to see. It was a fuel truck I drove during a field op in Ft Polk, LA. Pinned the throttle comming out of a riverbed and when I got to the top, it just went nuts. Tach was buried, we jumped out and used fire extinguishers to shut her down. The engine is one thing but with 1950 gal of JP-8 behind it....

I am a millennial about 31 years old, but where I live, DD's were very common engines. In our city, there used to be a CN line near my family's apartment ( I am Canadian). There were all these maintenance vehicles doing snow removal work during the winter, including Pettibone Speed Swings. I am aware that those old Speed Swings used the 4-53 Detroits, but I love the sound. My city also had Vohl snowblowers with 6-71 Detroits powering the snowblower part. These are the kind of engines that create memories in little boys.

I grew up on a farm with Detroits. My dad farmed with AC HD5 crawler with a 271 Detroit and then later got a 1900 Oliver with a 453 Detroit. I spent a lot of time operating the 271 and some time on the 453. Both great machines.

I see a lot of comments on the oil leaks of any 2 stroke Deitroits. The oil control rings in all of these engines was main"culprit". The oil rings are touchy when it comes to dirt ingested by a faulty or unserviced air filter. Those of you who have rebuilt any of the 2 stroke Deitroits know that the Piston/ ring assemblies are loaded from the bottom of the liner,and NEVER from the top! If the oil control rings were to be pushed past the transfer ports,the rings would be damaged and copius amounts of oil would accumulate in the air box drains,and could lead to a runaway under certain conditions.

I owned an 8V92. Was a great strong working motor. Little hard on fuel but loved the sound. It leaked oil from all over but you Can't kill them. They run and run.

I too have an 8V-92, which I pulled from the engine compartment of it's hydraulic power pack. It powers the hydraulics of a MAC Saturn 76x42 shear shredder set up with a 48" wide primary set of 2" blades and a 24" wide secondary set of 1-½" blades. I have recently reinstalled the rebuilt 8V-92, reconnecting to it's geared transmission to drive three hydraulic pumps, This has been quite a project. Your's too has been quite a project. Waldo, you seem to have a knack for the mechanical, curious enough to enjoy the troubleshooting and talented and competent at the diagnosis and implementation of the repairs and reassembly. I got my start on 8v92 Silvers in Pierce Fire Apparatus, I’d catch them occasionally on old Blue Bird Wanderlodge motor homes. I still see them in equipment. The 16V in power generation, 12v in the occasional semi… they’ve been a career long love of mine. I’ve had them from the Army all the way onto the civilian side. Mechanical through addition of DDEC. Someday before I retire I want to get a 70s truck and do a restore with either a 6V53 or 8v71. I just wanna hear that thing run. Then in my retirement I can say I own the best one I’ve ever built. The US was built by oil weepers in Alpine Green.

Grew up with my fathers Allis Chalmers track loaders and bulldozers that were powered by 2-71 Detroit diesel’s. We also had a Ford L8000 that was powered with a 6-71 Detroit diesel. Daily oil checking and top offs were an everyday thing.

The 2 stroke Detroit Diesels are, by far, the easiest of diesels to "fuel prime", followed by the old Cummins PT system. An old spray paint pot can be easily converted for the purpose. Just fill the pot, connect the hose to a Tee on the primary fuel filter inlet, then pressurize the tank with 30 or so pound of air. You don't even need to loosen the plug on the top of the filter to bleed the air. The air pressure in the tank will push Clean fuel through the entire system. Usually, you can hear the return flowing back into the tank, once the system has been purged. I've used this system on a variety of diesels over the last 30 plus years. Some engines still require bleeding the individual high pressure lines. I have fittings for all the sizes I normally encounter. Works great and saves a lot of frustration. (If you put a valve in the hose, you can shut off the Pressure prime and use the onboard tank without having to disconnect the hose.)

You should have a hand operated fuel primer pump to get fuel through the lines and head, usually there is a plug near or between filters that can be taken out to connect your pump. You also should have a piece of plywood or something stiff ready to throw over intake of blower in case in runs away....the first start is always risky.

It was really cool! I was 4 years old at the time and I remember it like it was yesterday. The paint was shining brightly in the sun not a scratch on it. It was a super advanced machine for its time. A 1970 case backhoe was a toy next to a Dynahoe!

When out of fuel to get it primed I got a 1 qt gear oil container, a length of hose and a fitting to go into the side of the fuel filter. Hooked up like intravenous. To keep the fuel system primed until it starts. Also an in line hose coolant heater for winter with a short blast of starter fluid

Up in Alaska, we would use those torpedo heaters to heat up our equipment also, but what we would do was throw a sheet of plastic over the engine compartment to help hold the heat in that area as it was rising.

a good friend of mine had an old chevrolet suburban that he transplanted one of these engines into. great running engine, but top of 4th gear (4 speed stick) was right about 57mph if you were lucky lol. not exactly highway friendly, but you could pull your entire neighborhood anywhere you wanted to go!

I have a freshly rebuilt 3-53 in my 84 Timberjack 225E and that sound is compared to by none. -10 to 95 Fahrenheit she starts and drags logs without any sort of sass. going to put one in my 95 K2500 this year just because

My dads best friend has a 1970s Dynahoe that 30 min after he bought it the 3-53 blew up so he ended up swapping in a 6.2 GM diesel out of my dads 82 c10. It is one cool machine. Good job on you're rebuild.

A quarry I worked for back in the 1990s had 7 Terex 60 ton rock trucks. The trucks had 12v92T in them. Regardless how cold it was in the winter,when we fired one of them up in the shop,open all 6 garage doors, because You could take the unburnt fuel. It was as bad as any tear gas I experienced in the Army.

The guy rebuilding these 12v92s had a small shop that was a Detroit man, supposedly. One day we just put one of them in a Terex. Marvin one of the lead mechanics,heard a noise coming from low in the block as engine was idiling. He just got his head out from between truck frame and engine block when a connecting rod came flying out of the block,right where his head had been a few seconds earlier. Turns out the Detroit guy forgot to torque a rod,and put a hole in side of block about the size of a man's head. LoL. Expensive mistake for Detroit guy.

First off nice Second I have worked on a lot of 3 and 4-53s and the big issues I have found for me is the valve lash . I find the cams were wiped out in them and the best way to adjust the lash was to keep it a little light and I used a caliper to adjust the injectors Other than that they were tough engines used in log skidders

You did a good job working on it. The starter motor probably was not bad, usually the contactor contacts inside the starter solenoid is what corrodes preventing good contact and often times you will hear a click or sometimes sparking, other times it will even start if warmer. It's fixable if you can get in to the solenoid. As for the blower gasket, it's possible when the wrong motor was put in there and cranked it backwards you blew the gasket. Not your fault, someone sent the wrong starter probably because starter motors were available in different configurations.

Careful with any oil leaks with that blower! You might possibly have a runaway engine if it starts. In which case, the only way to shut it down is by cutting off all intake air to it. Sometimes that requires an assistant with a wooden paddle. Otherwise, your new rebuilt engine will keep revving higher until it blows.

Have a 353 in a Pedibone all retain fork lift, starts and runs good. Just makes more noise with a muffler on it, the a V8 gas engine with no muffler. Coverting diesel fuel to noise very nicely.

Straight 40 wht. Monograde. Heavy duty oil. I keep a engine heater plug in going on mine and will do a charge up of batterys if I have not started in a week or two. My 190 Dynahoe starts up quick The key is keep engine warm. The engines call for 40 wht.

@@WaldosWorld The controls are like CASE with swing being on right lever instead of foot pedal. Keep right hand on boom and left on dipper and bucket. Extend out till you are right off ground. practice coming tord backhoe with out digging ground, do it over and over till you feel confident, just remember push lever away and all functions go away from backhoe, pull lever and function comes tord backhoe keep righthand off swing till confident with digging then you can start keeping right on swing lever. Just some tips to help you dig in control.

I had that machine..the engine ran fine ..I put a flowmaster muffler on it...it put many meals on our table..one thing I did not like was it would slobber two cycle diesel on my trailer deck

Couple of things , I would suggest anytime you start a 2 stroke for the first time would be to remove the 4 bolts from the air intake port and have a block of wood to choke it out if you get a run away. A little bit of wd40 would help to get it to hitting and is not as hard on the engine as ether .

In equipment they still are. They were generally the same from 1938 through their whole run and parts are still available as the tooling to produce them was acquired by a company in Germany. I still see them regularly.

Interesting project. We recently rebuilt a 1982 Timberjack skidder with a 1984 3-53 Silver turbo...lost of learning and fun...keep up. If I may...even on fuel filters it is recommended to use oil to lubricate your seals...diesel affects the seals...good luck!

This was one of two engines that we but in a construction tool it pulled a big weight 2500lb up rails 12’ and dropped it it was all hydraulic pervaded by two pumps the other engine was 255 in line six international harvester very dependable but no balls at all and I think it should have oil pressure when cranking

#2 Home heating oil is dyed red but basically the same as diesel though the dye tends to clog injectors over time. It is illegal to use in highway engines as home heating oil is not taxed. Not sure If that applies to farm and construction equipment also

And home heating oil isn't road taxed, so they dye it red so truckers can't save a dollar ( HEVEN FORBID!!! ). I cannot see a situation where a red, or any color dye, clogged "certain" diesel engines versus an oil fired boiler. Those have nozzles too, that spray fuel....

I hate initial start-ups of fresh rebuilds. They never go as planned. At least not for me. Always some drama that cost you more time and money. I'm going to look for the follow up now. I hope it goes better.

How is your Dd liking that Rotella 40 wgt.. a few years down the road, later? It is Extremely critical that you use LOW ASH 40 wgt, Only. Rotella T1 does Not meet the DD Low Ash specs. Also, exhaust smoke coming out of the Blower inlet... is Not "usually" a good sign. LOL I think you have a reverse rotation starter. Detroit Diesels can be built to run in either rotation. I have Not watched the whole video, yet.... I stopped just before you tried to start it with the key... other things calling my attention, will be back later. Good luck.... oh, and change the starter.

Firstly I really do hope you didn't tear up any bearings cranking and cranking and cranking in the wrong direction...... Secondly what is all that clatter did you turn the crankshaft around by hand several times when you set the valve lash? Usually they don't clatter like that when you're just cranking..... Next time fill up the fuel filters with diesel and crack open the injector lines to let the air out when they start spraying fuel close them up and start the engine

To prime your fuel system, install a ball valve (1/4”) on an outlet on the secondary fuel filter and put a hose barb with clear tubing downstream of the valve. Then use the fill valve from an old innertube hose clamped to your fuel tank inlet. Turn the pressure on your tire fill hose down as low as it will go and pressurize the system while the valve on the fuel filter is open. Catch the fuel in a big glass jar or jug and run fuel out until no more air comes out. Shut your valve and you are ready. She’ll fire right up, I promise.

2 strokes take 2 stroke oil with a 2 stroke API rating, starting with C for compression ignition and ending in -2. I hear Delo-100 is best but rarely in stock. For some reason Wal-Mart oil is 2 stroke rated. Maybe old Sam had one. It has a strict maximum ash content to resist coking.

Oh interesting! I didn't realize the -2 or -4 suffixes meant two or four stroke. I also didn't realize that Walmart oil is rated for two strokes... I usually use Shell Rotella SAE 40, but Walmart oil could be a good choice in a pinch

@@WaldosWorld Rotella T1 40 wt does have a CF-2 rating, which might be the highest unless they have a CG-2 now, but Delo-100 is specifically formulated for the old GM 2 strokes and probably has less ash for less coking, so given ordering time, use that. The C in "CF-2" stands for compression ignition and the "2" stands for 2 stroke.

@@WaldosWorld..... You MUST use LOW ASH rated Straight 40 wgt (or 30 wgt Below 32 deg. F.)... Rotella T1 is NOT - Low Ash rated. It WILL "slobber" and Will "coke-up" the intake ports. Also, it's Best Not to idle your engine (or Any 2 cycle GM Diesel / Detroit Diesel) for more than a couple of minutes, and even then.. only for "cool down" after it's been working hard. Extended idling on these engines WILL cause cylinder Glazing, resulting in pool oil control. These engines should either be "working" or shut down.

2 stoke diesels should take SAE C*-2 rated oil, with the * being as far down the alphabet as possible, at least CF-2. the -2 stands for 2 stroke. the best brand is the one made by GM for GM, Delo 100. It has low ash content to prevent coking. A couple of fluid ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil will also help dissolve coke, especially if you have trouble obtaining Delo 100, which is NOT the more common Delo 200. For some reason Wal Mart'sDiesel oil has a CF-2 rating. Maybe old Sam had a Detroit. I spent a summer helping expand a campground with it's own gravel pit, driving an old Chevy Brigadier dump truck with a 6V-53. and loading with a Hitachi EX-60 excavator. It was once affiliated with the camper that hit the novelist, Steven King.

Why run straight grade oil in the motor ? That's very old tech. The newer oil flows so much better and quicker on startup which means less wear.

The water would’ve settled at the bottom could’ve just untwisted that once you seen diesel you knew it was good and then twist it back up didn’t really have to drain that much fuel lol

Hello. We recently got a Rayco roller type 400 with a Detroit 3-53 two-stroke diesel engine. Does this engine need a special engine oil or can I use the same as for four-stroke diesel engines? Thanks in advance.

Is the manual kill flap on and preveinting it from starting? Never had that hard of a problem starting a old Detroit even after removing the filters and replacing them

Use WD 40 as a starting fluid. It’s not as harsh on the components.

At least here in the US, off-road diesel is dyed red to indicate that fuel tax has not been paid on it. Diesel for road use does not have dye but it's more expensive due to the taxes.

Yep, I rebuilt it myself. It was my second engine rebuild ever. It's a lot of work, but it's also really cool having a thorough understanding of how the engine works!

@@WaldosWorld a word to the wise. Anytime you do a first start of a diesel like that (especially a two stroke Detroit). Have a board that can easily cover the intake, at the ready, to gag it out if it runs away. Nice job. She sounds great.

To reprime the fuel system try filling the fuel tank with compressed air. See if that helps.

I did actually try that off camera. It helped me find the leak at the fuel filter! 👍
