The King's Indian Defense (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7) is a popular way to fight 1.d4, especially at amateur level. Here my opponent chooses a less popular to fight the Classical Variation (6...Na6), but a true King's Indian "race" situation develops where White attacks in the center/queenside, while Black attempts to butcher White's king! Some touch-and-go moments in this one.

One of the most fascinating games of the entire Standard Chess series! The post-game analysis was especially captivating! It is easier for me now to see why this opening holds such fascination for the Fischers, Kasparovs and Nakamuras of the chess world! Truly mind-numbing, amazing tactical possibilities arose during this game!

Wow, this was excellent! This was everything I hope to find in a John Bartholomew video: an interesting and tense game, a good and interesting analysis by John followed by a revealing analysis by John-plus-Stockfish. This is the kind of stuff that makes me consider picking up chess again (as in join a club and play regularly).

Another fantastic Standard video Minnesota Fins, a.k.a. Nostrajohnus. Christmas came early this year. Not sure what you mean't by a "horizon problem for engines."
@jorisvandenbroeck6609
@jorisvandenbroeck6609 6 жыл бұрын
To keep it simple : let's say the engine can only calculate 5 moves ahead - if you start playing a 6-move tactic, the engine would be very dismissive of your tactic at first, but improve the evaluation as soon as it starts seeing the idea. It only declared it bad at first because the point of the move was "behind the (thought) horizon" (I often have this when I watch IM or GMs play some weird move, then understand their idea 3-4 moves later) In the KID, black lets white have a strong center in exchange for long-term compensation, but traditional engines aren't able to calculate far enough ahead to see this compensation at first. As the game progresses, they start to understand that White isn't simply winning. AlphaZero was in fact able to beat Stockfish several times by getting some long-term compensation - exploiting the fact that Stockfish can "only" calculate 20-30 moves ahead.

I've been watching many of your vids lately and you do a fine job teaching all the ways you look at positions and decide what to do when and why. Especially during the game. I think the format you've chosen to present is a particularly efficient instructive procedure. It is based almost entirely in reality for one thing. Given the time constraints it is very demanding of you. You must think about the game, think up a way forward, then a way to explain how you are figuring, then speak all the words clearly in a manner that makes sense, all in a matter of a few seconds most of the time, and constantly for a solid hour. You handle it all like a champ I must say. However, this does have one drawback I've noticed. After an hour of all that busy brain activity it really winds you up. It is visibly evident. And because you are always so pumped up by the end of the game, when you transition into the end-of-game analysis phase, you are still going like 150 mph. So you rush through it too fast, and especially talk way too fast. Like a game show host. Even faster than during the game sometimes since there exists no clock to pace you. I am forever pausing the video to catch up on some of the possible variations you bombard us with at the end. Plus rewinding on KZbin is imprecise and clunky. "Did he say B or E or D?". All those sound the same at 150 mph. Must be the Doppler effect or something going on there. I really like the end portion of the videos, but please take a short breather after the game so you can calm down a little. Try to slow yourself down. Don't know about everyone else, but it would help me comprehend better anyway, and not waste so much time dealing with KZbin's clunky media player. On the other hand, it is awfully entertaining to watch you rev up like that. Kinda like watching airplane races.

John, a few suggestions for you. You could make the analysis screen a bit bigger so we can see the +/- signs on the lines. Also, when doing analysis on chess.com (also in lichess, which I think is much better in general for analysis) I think it's better to run the whole game through analysis instead of analyzing move by move (Self Analysis). Open game > Analysis button > Computer Analysis > Select Depth: Quick (1 min), Deep (3 min)...Not Self Analysis. This way you won't have to worry about the engine vacillating on clear moves so you can focus on the more uncertain moments and you'll get the list of Inaccuracies, Mistakes and Blunders with the move and top line. Thanks for the excellent videos.
@callumevans2615
@callumevans2615 5 жыл бұрын
It's much better to analyse games yourself and work out where you went wrong/could improve instead of the engine telling you everything - it makes you engage far more with the analysis and you'll learn better from it.
