I agree about the temps being the only trigger for spikes on phals. My phals grow in a room where there is no natural light. Only artificial light is provided and I keep the lights on a timer so they get the same number of hours of light per day all year round. All my phals that are healthy enough to bloom (25 of them) sent out spikes at the same time this past fall (2019) just after a few weeks of a drop in temps.

What do you do when you have loads of leaves and masses of roots? I bought a new slightly larger pot which should fit inside my ceramic pot, but I think it may not be big enough! My Phal now has six leaves but it hasn’t sent a spike up since the last one died off last July. I’m not sure but it may have had hormones too as each leaf gradually gets bigger. Good luck with yours!

Sadly, my only phal species has been sunburned and probably won’t put on buds for the foreseeable future. While, my complex hybrids take up too much space, forcing me to place them on a north-west-ish-facing windowsill that gets AC drafts. I’m not sure if it’s enough light to fuel spike formation, tho. I’ve read that north-facing windows don’t provide enough light. I know temp is what’s largely responsible for spike production, so does that mean I should place them outside each night for a week? I live in the northeastern US.

My Phalaenopsis haven’t bloom in 3 years. It’s so hard to get them bloom living very close to the equator. Temperatures are very high year round. 32-34deg. Only this time of the year it’s been raining daily and the temperature is 27-29 in the day and 22-25 at night. They just keep growing new leaves and new roots. I’m keeping in under a shade where it get some direct morning sunshine. I really wish I could get it bloom again soon.

If I put my Phal in garage at night when temps drop to trigger blooming, at what point do I stop putting it out at night? When flower spike starts, when buds form, or when blooms start to open ?

Thanks for all your advices! You've helped me understand a lot about my mini phal. Your advice on cutting the spike after it had no more flowers did wonders to the health and growth of my orchid. Now It has been spiking for some months now and there are a lot of buds growing slow but steadily. I recently saw that it was forming a branch in the node right below the first bud. It it a good thing? Could it be because of fertilizing or damage as some people say? Thanks again!

I tried repotting some of my orchid in LECA and they did not perform well, even though I don't live in a hot climate where the top would dry out so quickly and have too moved back to a more traditional mix.

I have a mix of bark and moss and recently repotted all my plants because I noticed tiny pests that I couldn't identify. I bought all new potting media, new plastic slotted pots, I washed everything and cleared off old media from my orchids. Upon repotting I noticed the same pests, they only seem to be IN the media, my plants seem to be doing fine, a few are dropping their bottom leaves (yellowing). Is there something I'm missing that I could be doing. I've had over the last few months 2 of my 12 orchids die, the leaves just broke off of the crown.

Going to be fun ! By chance I am trying the same thing. My Phalenopsis Orchid has been having a fine time outside on my eastern porch. I live in the mountains of Andalucia . Outside has been around 33º during the day and around 25º at night. Now daytime is around 22º with lows of ten. This difference will increase. I will bring him in mid November. Outside night will fall to around 4º I don't think he will like that. This is my first Orchid. He came from a garage and had rotted roots and bad medium. When his flowers were tired I cut his spikes right back, re potted him in good medium, and fed him every two weeks with Orchid food in distilled water. I water when his pot goes light. I put holes in the clear pot. I water through the pot until it is heavy, wait until there are no drips and put him back dry in his saucer. So will I get spikes ? The plant has made a shed load of new roots and six new leaves, so maybe he will feel up to it. I love the videos. Very helpful for a newbie. Thanks.

Now 13th December. Plant has been inside for about a month. And hey ! Got two lovely new flower spikes on the way. So seems to have worked the outside thing. Or maybe he just felt like flowering anyway. Kitchen temp fluctuates around 10º from day to night.

You mentioned in this video that you do not leave old spikes on your orchids. You prefer new spikes. My question is, if you leave an old spike on is it possible to also have a new spike form when cooler temperatures arrive?
@MissOrchidGirl5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes it is. Older spikes can produce secondary spikes at the same time too. It can happen though, that the flowering won't be very showy per spike, due to the orchid having to allocate the same energy to 2 spikes, rather than one. So some growers prefer new spikes at full potential :)

Hello! When you have a "classic", complex hybrid phal and the spikes start to develop, at least you know that you will have flowers soon in most cases. What you can do if you have a summer bloomer? I have, for instance a corningiana x lueddemanniana which was bought mature and with 4 spikes some months ago. It has a very good root system and leaves developed. Why doesn't it bloom, especially because we had such hot summer? Btw, are you using semi-permanent polish now? If not, I truly recommended for girls like us who have their hand in plants all day and do chores in the house :)
@MissOrchidGirl5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I too have some issues with the summer bloomers, they are growing more leaves than usual, but less flowers. I tried them out in the heat this year and it might have been too much, so think about how hot it was. Maybe warm temps trigger flowers and heat vegetative growth. I don't use semi permanent polish, as the brands I found require time to cure under UV rays and I am not protecting myself with 15 layers of sunscreen against the sun, just to expose my nails to UV willingly.. LED lamps are emitting UV, no matter how you call them, it's what gel needs to cure, anw, no point in getting into it lol I have a mouth full to say to some nail techs :)) So yeah, if you know a brand that doesn't need UV to cure, I'm all ears! 😁

@juliadandy60195 жыл бұрын
Jelena Purić I believe simply putting them in the plane won’t work. There are multiple laws regarding transportation of plants and seed to avoid introduction of pests. I would def check laws on the country you are going to (and also layovers along the way!) and check if there is any documentation or setup you can do ahead of time to be ok to take them.

How to know if it's a flower spike or a root of a phaleanopsis
@karylfriedman57885 жыл бұрын
the root looks very blunt/rounded at the tip, the flower spike appears like a little mitt. It's slightly pointed and I've found them to be a bright green, sometimes. It can take a bit of time and growth to be sure, but once a spike starts to grow, they really move along. I have mini-phals that are always in spike. Great fun! Good luck with yours.

I guess I'll have to try to "cool" my phals down on a windowsil, here night temperatures already drop to 8C or less, I worry what that could do to them. But I have a question... if you have a sick phal (store bought, roots were rotting, managed to save her, now I always check the roots when I'm buying orchids), is it ok to let it intentionally skip blooming? I worry that if she gets colder it will trigger the spike creation and possibly kill her since I don't think she has the energy for it... I know others would probably throw her out, since she was practically rootless, but I want to save her if possible. Thanks in advance.

Under 15 degrees Celsius is not advisable generally for phals and under 10 degrees Celsius definitely not advisable.
