A beloved elderly friend passed away and he loved orchids. He'd send me pictures and videos of him caring and grooming them. After he passed away I was shopping and a beautiful Phaleonopsis jumped out at me, deep pink, just like the one he had shown me many times. I decided to buy it, feeling as if it was a "Message from beyond", from my friend. Since that day I have had this happen two more times, and I am now the proud Mama to three beautiful orchids. I have seen them everywhere, literally! In doctors offices, on tv, in movies, Netflix, and I even went on holiday to Hawaii and at every store, restaurant, there were these beautiful Phaleonopsis orchids. In Fact, served with just about every meal there was one decorating my plate, or the buffet table was lushly and lavishly decorated with them. Women had them in their hair too. Now, when I see one, it seems to call out to me, just as the Orchids did for you and some of your readers in the comments here! I'd really love to know how to get my orchid to have so many spikes. I also have an orchid video on my channel, it's an ASMR video, and shows the flower in a beautiful, rich lighting, where I explain the simple care of the Orchid. It's a soft spoken video meant for relaxation. Please come by my channel and see it. I hope you enjoy it. Your Orchids are so beautiful.

This is a very complete, informative video, great job. I do agree besides providing proper care and having a healthy plant with a good root system, the main factor that prompts the spike and focusing to flower is temperature. I've read temperatures over 82 oF or 28oC, or lots of shade with stop them from initiating flowering. But once the temperature is constantly below 78 (26oC) and night temperatures falling to 16-17oC or 61-65oF (Indoor) will prompt spikes production. For example I live in Southern California and here the temperature starts to drop at the end of November, so usually my Phalaenopsis starts to spike in January which is around 5-6 weeks after my indoor temperature drops and stays constantly within that range here. My indoor temp during winter time is 72-64oF or 22-17oC constantly. So I think besides the health of the plant, temperature drop is the main factor than day light length.Thank you Danny. Greetings

Thank you for all your videos, I was able to rescue an Orchid that hasn't bloomed in years. I found out the roots were almost all dead because I left it in the moss medium it came with. Long story short I reported in bark I cut the old flower spike and dead roots, news leaves grew and two flowers spikes popped up. Finally after years my Orchid will bloom again. Love you!

Dani and I thought I was going crazy lol. Since November my phals have been growing spikes. Some phals with more than one and some phals like my white phal with very thick spikes. So the only explanation I could think of was the unpredictable cold weather drop we have been having here in Florida this winter. I dont know as much as you do about orchids but as I believe that no matter how much we research, at the end of the day we know and understand our own orchids. So I just knew that something very different was going on this winter with my girls. You have totally cleared that for me. Thank you so much for this video. My orchid has its first flower spike post-purchase growing in now. I'm of the opinion that light is a greater trigger as opposed to temperature as I keep my orchids in a basement under grow lights. Being a basement, the temperature does not change much and I try to maintain seasons for my plants by using timers on the lights and periodically boosting or reducing the daily light by half-hour increments so I'd have to say that light has a more drastic swing than temperature has.

one of my phalenopsis orchids must have won the genetic lotto for flowering as it has seven! spikes, which all branch out as well. I kinda wonder if they did anything special to it to get it this way and if it will rebloom like this next year. I've never seen any with this many spikes anywhere (they had a few of them at the garden centre at the time which had 5-7 spikes and I assume they all were clones, about half of them had a terminal spike though so I'm not sure how healthy this breed is). Well I guess I just enjoy the show this winter and will see what it does next year

Ruby Sch if the flower spike of a phalaenopsis doesn't die you can always cut it and will promote a new spike from the old one. But I always make sure the orchid have a health root system if it doesn't than I will cut the spike all the way to the base because I prefer to have a health plant than lots of spikes.

Living at about 46° N in latitude with hot summers and cold winters, I have my Phalaenopsis orchids placed in a north-facing garden window so that they receive morning and midday sun. I think I've only fertilized once since I've owned these two orchids, which was in early January (one of them I purchased in mid November last year, the other I've had for about 4 years). They continued to add new flowers along the spike "branches", but I just decided to cut the spike on the oldest orchid so it could dedicate more growth to its leaves. I may do the same next week with the newer orchid. Interestingly, the older orchid blooms twice a year - in June and in November. I that the temperature change to warmer or cooler days and sunlight influence it. It will be interesting to see if the new one blooms in the summer, too, but I think cutting the spike early despite the new growth is probably the best thing I can do for it so it can prepare for summer blooming.

I am curious, I have had a phalaenopsis for about 6 or 7 years. Last year in March it sent up its annual flower spike right on schedule. However, this last year once it started in March it has just kept going nonstop. It is now sending up a 4th flower spike while at the same time the 2nd and 3rd flower spike have begun to re-bloom. I have heard, but never observed myself, that some orchids create a "last hurrah" and produce an abundance of flowers and then when done the orchid dies from exhaustion.

Hi, Danni Thank you very much for your videos and sharing your Orchid knowledge with us. One aspect that I noticed mentioned in this video was the temperature and seasons. What is the Orchid’s natural growth season? I live in Chicago, USA and I’ve recently started caring for Phels. I’ve always loved them, but sadly I never knew how to properly care for them until I found your channel after I was looking for caring instructions for my new Phel I found at the grocery store. I couldn’t resist from getting her. So far she’s flowered for me since November and is just barely dropping her last flower. I noticed, however, it has a mitten shaped tip at the end of both spikes, so I am unsure if I should wait a few months and cut at the base or if I should let her be and see if it will rebloom again for me since Spring hasn’t really hit the Midwest I am tempted to wait a little and bring my Phel outside when the temperatures become warmer. What would you recommend?

I removed them from the decorative containers an they are in plastic containers for now I am thinking of clay or the plastic clear as I like to see the roots but they are easy to tip over. But my question is how my orchids are doing all these things at one time?? Blooming, producing stems, producing flower buds, and growing leaves?? I want to report them but I am trying to wait until they finish blooming.

One thing I've noticed with phal flowers as well as ordinary cut flowers is that any buds opening inside the house away from light don't have the same strong colours as the rest. It's super noticeable with bunches of cut sweet peas in the summer. So I feel pigmentation is somewhat dependent on the light levels. So a flower spike also needs to head towards light for that, as the pigmentation are also the guide lines for insects finding the nectar. Check out how insects see flowers, totally different to us!

I have a phalaenopsis that produced a flower spike about two months ago, and has been blooming for the past few weeks. When the buds began to open, I moved it from my plant bench, which receives no direct sunlight, to the dining room table where it receives two or three hours of direct light per day. Six out of the seven buds opened, the last one on the stem stayed closed. Now, instead of one unopened bud on the end, I see two, and the older one is starting to show some color. You say they can keep going for up to a year--extending the spike after flowering starts is a normal thing for a phal to do? I've skimmed through a few books on orchids and never heard of this happening, but yours do this too?

Hi, I have two phals that have started to produce new roots and one is growing what looks like it could be a flower spike because it is very pointy. I noticed the new roots on this one about three weeks ago (and this is mid-May) I hear you talk about temperature a lot and a few weeks ago, the temp had dropped here (in California) that must have been what induced the new roots. I also have another one that I was trying to save with absolutely no roots. It is growing new leaves like crazy and has two new baby roots growing. The question I have is, should I re-pot either of them right now? The roots on the first one are about 2 to 3 inches long already but they don't seem to have anything to grab onto. They are just like sticking out from the plant. Is it time to re-pot?
