Trying Not To Sink

Күн бұрын

We pick up our new crew members in Georgetown and head off to explore Rudder Cay and Staniel Cay. Unfortunately, we were greeted rudely upon arriving at a marina in Georgetown. The same marina that caused significant damage to our rub rail back in 2021. I guess we should have learned our lesson last time!

Went to Georgetown in 1992 with a yacht and it was just about the same then. Terrible dock power and the docks were in bad shape too. In some places the docks had bolts sticking out 8 to 10 inches just waiting to gouge your boat. Definitely just a re provisioning stop for a power boat. Emerald Bay to the north is much better for a stay if you need a place. Georgetown is a beautiful place but is mostly a sailboat anchorage destination.

This marina you visited suffered from hurricane damage several years ago and has been slowly recovering. It’s locally owned by Bahamians not a large corporation. If your in need of power and quality floating docks you go to Emerald Bay marina 8 miles up the road. Most people anchor in the excellent Harbour and dinghy into town using the large protected dinghy dock directly behind the grocery store you visited, Exuma Market. The burn marks on the dock are the result of a boat fire last year where cruisers and locals rescued several nearby boats and put out the fire at great risk to their own safety. The fire was caused by a problem on the boat. Georgetown is a small town, everyone knows one another, heck they even know you by your car. They also remember your boat and you for years. This is very much a country where you are responsible for your own decisions. Many docks in the Bahamas have exposed bolts, it’s your responsibility to see them and protect your boat. There are several large state of the art marinas here too. Chub Cay is excellent. I’ve never used that dock. It’s obviously in need of repair. It amazes me when I see large boats like yours there. Your braver than me. I have lived on Exuma most of the last four years. I also have a boat and either anchor or use Emerald Bay. Anchoring in the Harbour is very safe.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 Жыл бұрын
We very much like the people of Georgetown. Which is why we returned despite what happened to our boat two years ago. It is our plan to anchor out when visiting Georgetown in the future, and dinghy into Lake Victoria. We have visited many marinas in the Exumas, and this is the only one we have seen in such disrepair. We have no problem with a marina that is being fixed, and has bolts protruding from the docks. However, not notifying us of the hazard was unacceptable. A simple heads up would have saved us considerable aggravation and expense. We have been contacted by several people with similar experiences there, including the owners of the boat that caught on fire. They have a very different opinion about what caused the fire. Having found a fire-damaged pedestal where I docked, and seeing the condition of all the other pedestals, their account seems very credible. We try to run a very positive You Tube Channel, and it was with great thought that we decided to post our opinion on this marina. In fact, it is probably the first time we have ever given such a negative opinion. It is also the only time we arrived at a marina, anywhere, and wanted to leave immediately. We would have, except for our generator not working and needing electricity, ironically. Thanks for watching, and for your feedback. Hope to see you on the water some day!

A bummer about that dilapidated marina, and the crappy service. Perhaps in time they will be able to get their act together and refurbish everything to a good standard. I imagine in the cruising world that word gets around and no one will stay there. And a very good Roger-Out score for this episode of 8.7.... three to four Roger-Outs per episode is kinda a sweet spot... and Lyn really nailed that one at 16:16! Nice! Roger-Out!!

Too bad. A marina that I stayed at in Cartagena Colombia, I had the HARD WIRE us into the power box with the current still hot! That was fun. But the stay there was quite nice. Loved it here. You med moored in and a diver took your bow line and swam it down to a chain on the bottom. Hey, it worked. Haha. Fortunately I had had experience hard wiring in hot in a prior business that I was in. And it was 240 and 480 3 phase. Ouch, as in dead.

Nice video and indeed that marina needs a bit of 'work'. Was kind of curious, having used that electric outboard for a while now, how is your opinion of an electric outboard out at sea ? Is it strong enough ? Does it have enough range ? Any problems ? We are thinking of exchanging our Honda 15 Hp for an electric outboard. Thanks
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 9 ай бұрын
We only have an electric trawling motor and it is terrible. We only use it when the dock is a couple hundred yards away and the waves are small. The only reason we use it at all is the difficulty in dropping the Boston Whaler into the water. We haven't used any of the good electric motors, like E Propulsion.

You are permitted to bring two hand guns into the Bahamas as long as you register them with immigration upon entry. A spear gun is scary. So is a flare gun. But we do not really worry about it. The islands are extremely friendly and practically zero crime. I was told by locals, if someone commits a crime they kick them off the island. Most islands we visit have populations around 200 people. Everyone knows everyone. It's different in Nassau or Freeport.

No. We get about 10 hours on our lithium batteries (for 110volt) and several days of 32 volt on our house banks. We start our generator each night for air conditioning and to recharge the batteries for the next day. We will probably add some more lithium and solar panels in the future so that we can get 16 hours or more.

You hit the nail on the head. When you're on vacation, you know your going to pay a premium for all services, including bar service. BUT when you don't get good service, and at premium prices, people tend to just call it a day, and NEVER go back and at the same time warn all their friends as well! Lession, if owner/operators want to play in the premium services/vacation/destination services businesses... Do it right, or don't bother, because the business won't survive.
