Nice looking little iron if it's half as much fun as the TS100 then I bet it's nice.

The TS80 is an incredible iron that does more with less than twenty Watts than other irons do with five times as much energy. I was also skeptical when I first received mine, but now my bench iron isn't getting much use anymore...

Try soldering a PL259 and some RG8X. That would be great for field antenna/cable repair.

The icon that you thought might be AC looks more like heat coming off the soldering tip.

It was faster, but that was the quality of the user. LMAO

Is the tip replaceable or is the tip and heating element one unit?

Hello Paul, I personally don't need one of these from a work point of view. but from soldering out in the cold and a cold wind can kill your iron what do think is better, TS 80 or TS100 ?
@Leif_YT6 жыл бұрын
I would make the decision based on what your power supply will be. TS100 has the DC Jacket and can be a bit more powerful while the TS80 has probably "enough" power for everything and can use USB Type C. For the lab or if you use 3S Lipo Batteries the DC Jack of the TS100 might be more practical - they sell nice flexible XT60 cables for it. If you prefer USB Type C, which will get more popuplar in PowerBanks and many friends might have at home from their phone / laptop chargers, the TS80 is more flexible. I think you can't go wrong with either (I use the TS100 for everything at home).
@learnelectronics6 жыл бұрын
I would think the TS100 if you have a truck battery you can easily access. Otherwise the TS80
@Brian-uq6jm6 жыл бұрын
If this TS80 is as good as the TS100, then there's no way for your old Hakko 936 style iron to compete with this little thing in term of soldering capability. Your power bank needs to support 9V 2A to power this iron. I don't have this particular iron but I have TS100. The TS100 definitely heats up faster, has a bigger thermal capacity, recovers heat faster than my Fakko 75W iron, only thing bad about it is the ergonomics and the lack of built-in ESD protection. That's why I bought one of the Chinese T12 OLED soldering station. Now I no longer need neither my Fakko nor TS100 cuz it has the best of both worlds.
@DJomant5 жыл бұрын
your powerbank goes to sleep cuz you never turned the Iron on. Plug the cable in press the Button closer to the tip side and it heats up. Use my TS80 every day with my power Bank

It runs on a QC 3.0 powerbank aswell so it would be a perfect EDC solution guess something is wrong with your powerbank or the meters

QC3 is a bit of a trainwreck. There are two standards involved, and to up the stakes one of them requires royalties - so there has been a lot of reverse engineering going on ... and like all chinese whispers - something always gets lost or changed in translation. And of course that's the "standard" used by most powerbank Mfrs, little wonder that nothing works as it should. The Hack may help - but its down to the luck of the draw. On the other hand if you stack the deck you'll get something that works. Testing the stock PSU that comes with the iron. Its putting out considerably more than 5v ... and slightly less than 9v - I've bought a number of extremely cheap 2000 and 4000mAh cell powerbanks. So I came up with a way to use them. My solution has been to add a standard "MT3608 DC-DC Voltage Step Up Adjustable Boost Converter Module 2A" (fleabay 10 for £3.33) to the case. It's still powered from the bank's USB out. I toyed with modding a powerbank - but just hanging the booster to the side is more flexible, and arguably safer as it uses each banks cell voltage protection (just in case) rather than introducing yet another stage. By setting the boost output to match the stock PSU's observed working voltages (8.2v +/- a shave) you get the same performance as having it on mains. Its a bit of a dog's dinner, and it doesn't switch but having a small variable powersource is handy. You just need to keep the sleep time on a short leash. I've also come to suspect that the USB power meters ALL interfere with with QC3 switching.

Andy, thank you for that information. It was most helpful. This is the kind of stuff I love seeing here.

Can you say ESD? Mine goes in my Fluke case. Emergency repair iron. Said that for those who think they are engineers but never go to the field.

I read your reply, that is cartoon enough. So, spoken like someone who has not only never gone to the field, but has probably refused to, and has the the gall to bitch about a field engineer.

I'm with you on the small irons esp when you measure them in mm - one of my bigger clients got me a "surprise" I couldn't refuse. To be fair this little gadget punches well above it's weight it's good for 90% of what I do ... just a shame it feels so light. I didn't have a qc3 powerbank but a little research revealed for the more adventurous, Github github.com/Ralim/ts100/issues/349 has a ridiculously easy to apply "hack" that allows the wee beastie to work with 5v. Unlike many hacks - there is nothing drastic (or guarantee voiding required) - simply plug USB into PC (with button pressed) and copy a file to iron. You can easily flash to new or revert to old in seconds and it changes the functionality massively. In the UK, poundland are selling quite decent 2000Kwh and 4000Kwh powerbanks (see big clive's channel) so it makes sense for those needing portability to at least look and see. Add a 9v stepup converter and you have something that works just as well in the field as in the lab.
