I went to the Lush store and the sales person gave me a tip for the best way to use the hair conditioner bar. She said to cut the bar in half, then use from the middle of the bar and work your way out over time. There is a hard cover on the outside of the bar to protect it, so this method allows you to get to the softer inside while maintaining the outer shell longer. She said the bar should last longer and it will condition your hair better!

I'm not sure what has changed in the past 7 years, but you're spot on with the liquids thing. I was with the TSA for 11.5 years and, unfortunately, some of us interpreted the S.O.P. differently. I always let toothpaste and peanut butter go through because OF COURSE they would hold their shape outside of the container. I don't remember what the plastic bag size was when I was there, but as many under 3.4 liquids as one can "comfortably" fit into a bag was fine. This is key for people who want to take booze in their carry-on. Be careful drinking them on the plane though because the airline may frown upon you not buying their cocktails. Finally, yes. As stupid as it sounds, it's not the amount of liquid, it's the size of the container. If there is a 4oz. container with only 1oz. of liquid it can't go on the plane. Ridiculous of course, but that's the way it works. Don't even get me started on the ice thing. Let's just say that I had many arguments with co-workers and supervisors over the years.

So according to TSA salt is a liquid
@staubach1979rt
@staubach1979rt 2 ай бұрын
@@Andy_Pandy2000 It falls into the powder category, not liquid. Salt gets examined in checked-in baggage constantly. Simply put, it alarms the CTX machine, the x-ray image is sent to the TSA screener and that screener has about 8 seconds to decide whether to send the bag to the the room where the “threat” of the salt will be tested. After testing, it will be cleared and sent on its way to the plane. The amount is key, as a salt shaker amount would probably not be enough to alarm the machine. In carry-on luggage, if the container holding the salt is more than 3.4 ounces it’s not supposed to be let on the plane per S.O.P. It may make little sense, but TSA personnel work under the cloud of getting in trouble ALL THE TIME from their superiors. Because of this, the salt stands little chance of getting on the plane. Trust me, lots of these rules are eye rolling to the TSA screeners as well.

My tip: Similar to when bagging groceries, keep the "edibles" separate from the non-edibles. Place toothpaste and such in one bag. Place shampoo and such a separate bag. Then place BOTH bags inside your one-quart Zip-Loc. That way, if containers explode, and contents mix, you won't be eating shampoo when you brush your teeth.

Love all your tips about swapping liquids for solids. I'm definitely going to check out the hair wax you showed. My tip is for getting around liquids. I tried this on my last trip & it worked. I love Korean sheet masks that come in single-use pouches. I packed a few with my dry toiletries & they went through TSA just fine. If you squish all the excess liquid down to the bottom of the packet before you take the mask out, you can get about a week to 10 days worth of serum/moisturizer out of the leftovers. Most people just waste it by throwing the packet away or using it all up for one mask session. You can just fold the packets down a few times & close them with paperclips. They're flat & don't take up much space in your toiletry bag. Some of the cheap formulas I've tried are much better than high-end serums.

Coconut oil can be used much like you described for your hair wax. It is liquid in hot weather so cold weather or freezer before you leave. It is also a moisturizer, hand lotion, lip balm etc so multiple uses for one item! For the crystal deodorant don’t wet it as directed. Instead put it on while still wet from the shower and it will last 2-3X longer. It’s been my go to for years and using it while still wet is a much better path!

I slice my shampoo/conditioner and soap bars into 1 inch pieces to use even less space. Vitamin E capsules are a great moisturizer. They are single use and a TSA solid! In a pinch, the Neutrogena sunscreen stick works as a moisturizer cream. I've used powder sunscreen in my hairline and part. Not as heavy duty as dry shampoo but will extend your wash.

Dry shampoo in powder instead of aerosol form, 2 in 1 stick products like those lip and cheek sticks or those concealer/highlighter sticks helps as well, and soaking a couple of those cotton pads in micellar water (squeezing and putting in a small sealed container - they stay wet/moist for at least a few days this way!) helps lessen liquids too!

The Burt's Bees Miracle Balm and their Hydrating Stick are pretty good moisturizer options. Another is to buy a raw (organic) shea butter bar and cut to size you want to take (they usually come in 8 ounce bars) and keep in a small container. I've found to get close to liquid/cream moisturizer effectiveness, you need to go with ingredients in liquid/cream moisturizers.

Totally agree about crystal salt deodorant-one of my best travel hacks-it’s effective, lasts forever and doesn’t cause streaks. For face, I use Olay (or similar brand) facial cleansing cloths, each cut in half-I don’t usually like disposable items but they work great for my sensitive skin, aren’t a liquid, and disappear (reducing my load) over the course of a trip. Trader Joe’s has a nice balm in a tin that I use for facial moisturizer before sunscreen (so far, no one has called it a liquid).

For solid moisturizer / lotion ... look into what's called "lotion bars". And read the ingredients list. One of my hobbies is cosmetic formulation. Most of the things I make are liquid, though I make a great shampoo bar and want to try conditioner bars and emulsified lotion bars. You can try a conditioner bar on wet skin as a lotion (hair conditioner is a type of lotion), or look at the ingredient list for emulsifiers and water-based ingredients. There are also "rinse off" emulsified lotion bars - these have an emulsifier so they ... rinse off. 😀USe these at the end of your shower, rub the bar on your skin, then rinse in the shower to turn it into lotion and rub gently to distribute. How can you tell if an ingredient is an emulsifier? There are different ingredient dictionaries out there ... I can't get to the links right now. One warning ... EWG bases their good or bad ingredients on which manufacturer pays them for their listings. EWG is not to be trusted. [I won't go into a full rant here.]
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 8 ай бұрын
Great info - thanks! I personally don't like the rinse-off lotion bars, since I then dry my skin, and even though I just "pat" dry with a towel, I feel like it then leaves me both damp AND poorly moisturized - ha ha!

Lush shampoo bars are great and last a long time IF you keep them dry. I keep them in tiny organza drawstring bags so they can hang and dry. I actually just leave them in and the bag acts like one of those poofs that create more lather. More importantly, it solves the problem that many Lush shampoo bars can shed chunky ingredients and/or crumble eventually. For their conditioner bars, I take them out of their bags to use. I actually use a larger organza bag for all my shower toiletries, including the ones in individual bags. If you can find a mesh bag the right size, it would probably last longer (cheap organza bags/pouches aren't very durable) but cost more and look less pretty (I like the variety and price of organza bags available). The worst way to store solid shampoo bars is in the aluminum tins Lush sells for the purpose. Those tins are wonderful for many purposes and I highly recommend them, just not for solid shampoo! They are much better than steel tins if they might get wet, and they weigh less. I'm surprised Lush doesn't sell little bags for the purpose (would expect organic cotton or recycled polyester mesh instead of organza). They've introduced containers made of cork, but those seem to have a lot of problems according to reviews; I wouldn't think cork would work well in shower conditions.

A good tip is never take anything halfway across the planet that you can get easily on from any local store on arrival at your destination, buy small quantities, no more than you need for your stay & leave any leftovers for the maids as a tip rather than taking back home with you or on to your next destination.

I use strong antiperspirant wipes from Zero Sweat because deodorant won't cut it for me. (At home I was already using Certain Dri roll-on which is the same chemical and available in local stores. Both brands are cruelty-free and vegan. Certain Dri also makes other antiperspirant/deodorant products, some solid, which are good and gentler.) Zero Sweat comes in little pouches, like wet wipes, and I use one a few times (more frequently than the "up to 7 days" they claim they can last) putting it back in its wrapper and then tightly sealing in ziplock bags between uses. I've only found them online. Once, the site I ordered through only sent one box when I ordered two, but when I found a way to contact the Zero Sweat people themselves they were very helpful, polite, and immediately rectified the problem.

LuSa Organics, a small, family-run natural products company in Viroqua, Wisconsin, has a solid tooth soap I have come to love. It does NOT have that "minty-fresh" feeling, and you DO have to acclimate a bit to the taste (which is, let's admit, a little...soap-y....), but it can't be beat for long-term travel minimalism. I warm up small pieces of this stuff and smoosh it into a 1/20 oz. (yes, that's .05 oz.) cosmetic sampler container; it lasts me a month and a half, brushing twice daily. You just moisten the toothbrush and rub it briefly over the tooth soap; a little goes a long way!

@@NoraDunn Thanks for the reply! I’ve actually tried the Lush tablets & other (even smaller) tooth tabs; they were ok, but I LOVE the even greater compactness/minimalism of this product, and have gotten accustomed to the taste - they do add some tangerine and mint oils, which prevents it from tasting *only* like soap (and it is much more affordable than the tablets, considering how long it lasts). :-)

I use most of the solid alternatives you suggested. I haven't found a good solid moisturizing bar that works for my sensitive and oily skin but I did find a solid hand lotion called butter bits. You take out a bit, warm it up in your hands then spread it around. I put them in a small plastic jar and keep it in my personal bag, no more small bottle of hand cream in your liquids! I also don't use liquid makeup items, I have mature skin and use an all cream, but not oil, 3D makeup system that all fits into one palette. All I take besides that is my primer/finishing spray, mascara and 4 small brushes. The makeup and palette are tsa approved and do not count as liquids. For cleanser I take Olay face clothes, they work great for cleansing and removing makeup and weight nothing.

Try Lush's King of Skin for a solid body lotion. I used it for years and about 5 years ago, they discontinued it. But they brought it back a few months ago. It is only in the bigger shops, but available online. It is colorless, unperfumed, and you rub it on in the shower before getting out. Do not use it outside the shower--it will be way too oily! A bar lasts me about two weeks of daily use, but better than a heavy tube or jar of body lotion.

I use Nelson's Naturals toothpaste. I just checked and I see that they also make tablets. For travel, I carry some in a contact case as it only takes a small amount for each brush. They come in 3.3 oz. jars but they are heavy. It's not lost on me that I'm taking something out of zero waste packaging and putting it into plastic but at least it's not single use. I got TSA pre-check before I started traveling with this so I haven't confirmed that it counts as a liquid but it's easy enough to slip a contact case into a liquids bag.

I highly recommend Lush Godiva shampoo bar, especially for hard water. It was their most popular for many years but then they discontinued it (why??) and I just found out it's back!❣ They had already discontinued "Hard" which was for hard water (water with high mineral content) and their statement that the cocoa butter in it made it work better in hard water is the only reason I tried Godiva to begin with. Since I have very oily hair that's difficult to get clean and only put conditioner on the ends, the "shampoo and conditioner" billing for Godiva didn't sound right for me. Cocoa butter helping remove oil from hair when the water is hard seems very counterintuitive to me, but does seem to actually work. I also like Seanik. It works second-best for me most places and actually better than Godiva in the water at my mother's house. The shampoo bar(s) that were supposed to be best for oily hair according to Lush didn't work that well for me. If you want your Lush bars to last, please see my comment about organza bags.

I'm a guy, with a guy's typically limited needs for skin- and hair-care products, so YMMV. I used to use Prell shampoo for travel. It's liquid, but really concentrated, so a small tube would last a really long time. This was before there were restrictions on liquids; I just cared about space in my toiletries kit. (I haven't seen it for sale for decades, but a web search says it still exists.) In today's world, a solid shampoo would be better -- and maybe better shampoo, too -- but in a pinch... For skin care, how about shea butter? The TSA classes it as a liquid, but you don't use much at a time, so a small container would go a long way. Lots of products use shea butter as an ingredient, but I don't mean those; I'm talking about the pure stuff on its own.

To be more clear, I don't fly anywhere, on any plane, in any country if I can help it - because I hate those liquid rules and I don't trust Amazon to send me the right product from the right company, that is made from the right ingredients I don't react to. I will buy other things from Amazon though! As far as deodorant, I just use soap and water and skip the deodorant. Has worked well for me. Not TSA friendly? as I do not know, but for washing my hair I'm trying to use the no-poo method and going to try to use baking powder. This can be bought at the destination I'm going to. However, I do not know if I can put baking powder in a bag and take it through customs okay. However, if I were to pack baking powder into little veggie capsules (ignoring allergies to capsules made form corn), that should work. I don't know how corn derivative free, scent free people get some of this stuff (especially if they react to other things too like lavender, coconut, soy). I react to every toothpaste I've ever used. ROFL I'm using baking powder now. The only sunscreen I can use is Badger, as its corn free to the nth degree. I was given a link to a website (which I lost) where this person who does react to corn, was making soaps and things from scratch. However, everyone had an ingredient I couldn't have. ROFL

Wow - what a frustrating allergy to deal with! Baking soda is useful for so many things though, so great call on that. For solid moisturizer, I use pure 100% cocoa butter (more details below). But I also get liquid moisturizer/conditioner from John Paul Mitchell Systems because having one product that I can use on both hair and skin makes up some for being liquid. If I could predict exactly how much I will use of each item, it wouldn't be as much of an advantage, but I can't. The most recent version of it that I have is called "TEA TREE HEMP restoring CONDITIONER & BODY LOTION" and doesn't even mention Paul Mitchell on the front. I haven't found anything else that works for both, and only found it to begin with because I was searching for a really good Paul Mitchell moisturizer that was available in tiny bottles in some hotels, but seemingly no where else. This was the closest thing I could buy and being multipurpose was a great discovery. Pure cocoa butter doesn't melt any better than most Lush lotion bars (though better than some) but costs less and if you have it on your hand and touch food or your lips it doesn't taste bad. I use the sticks of Queen Helene 100% Cocoa Butter (larger than lip balm, smaller than deodorant, and loose in their tubes) and love it. But, be warned: the Queen Helene "cocoa butter" products in other shaped containers are just mixtures that contain some cocoa butter - not the same at all! Ditto for "cocoa butter" sticks from other brands (now sitting on my local store shelves where the QH 100% CB used to be 😠). Depending on what's available to you, you might need to get pure cocoa butter from a soap-making supply place and melt it to reshape into a convenient form.

Does anyone know of any non-liquid tooth"paste" with fluoride? I have Lush toothy tabs and have seen tooth powders at co-ops, but would never use them long term because my teeth need fluoride, and that I have not found in non-liquid. (also needs to be cruelty free for me) I love Tom's of Maine toothpaste and used to be able to find it in sample/travel size but not for years... may have to fill my own container, but prefer using the original tube for toothpaste...

Yes. Amazon has some. Simplut is the brand. I believe there are others. I’m always looking for any without stevia. I can’t stand the taste.

I travel with almost everything you have mentioned here and I also include a lavender stick to help with sleep or stress. would coconut butter be considered a solid? it makes for a great moisturizer. Thanks for all your tips and tricks - another great video, Nora!

Yay - great minds think alike! Yep - Coconut butter is a solid (as long as you're not in a tropical place where it melted!). Curious about the lavender stick - checking that out now!

Nora I’m not sure if it was on this video but I fell in love with the hobo roll but cannot seem to buy it! Do you have an alternative ?

Hi Ana, great question! I was in touch with the founders who have a few projects on the go; they're redesigning and rebranding their company and plan to relaunch, but it may not be until next year! In the meantime, I don't have a truly comparable alternative; compressible packing cubes work....

Hi Nora, would you please list the specific brand names of the products (for example, the toothpaste tabs, salt deodorant, face cleanser, and especially your "future" sunscreen powder)?! When I click on any of your links, amazon has multiple products and I have no clue which one(s) you have recommended in the video(s)! Thank you
@NoraDunn

If you aren't taken to the exact product page, it means Amazon doesn't carry that exact brand in your country.

@@user-cw1fz3ur8b Deodorant: I've used the following brands - Thai, Crystal (the trick is to get the small travel size). Toothpaste: I've used Lush Toothy Tabs, and a brand only available in the US. Sunscreen Powder: The brand I got was on sale at Costco a few years ago. But seriously for all of these, just search on Amazon and choose what looks good!

@@tiffanynoble3029 Great question. TSA will technically look at the number of people traveling and the number of liquids bags in the tray. That said, I'm now wondering myself about the regulations....you might want to check the TSA website to make sure.

What do you do for supplements. I generally take quite a lot..vitamin D, fish oils, etc. Is it likely to cause problems when bringing as carry on?
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Жыл бұрын
I don't have trouble with supplements. I even "decant" them into ziploc bags to save space (and I put the label from the supplement bottle in the bag too so I - and anybody else - can identify them), even though some people say that increases the risk of them being taken/scrutinized. I've never had a problem though.
