Always intrigued by the Berube is a cup winning coach angle. How many coaches have won cups with more than one franchise? For a guy who leans on the analytics for football picks this seems to be a bit of a blind spot. Tommy Gorman, Dick Irvin, Scotty Bowman and umm....Craig Berube?? This is so cute. An obviously management mandate to try to drum up some positivity before the season starts. He can only come up with two reasons related to personnel. The others are mostly magical thinking. The main one is because they have to, they are due and they also laughingly suggest if it doesn't work this year changes will be coming and we all know that isn't so. Number two is the new coach . Number three because Matthews is captain. So both basically magical thinking. Sympathetic magic and positive thinking. Number 4 is because Woll is going to be really good and play a lot. This is also a reason for pessimism. Woll needs to be really good and he needs to play a lot. He looked really good in his 25 games last year. A lot of goalies fade when they have to play more games. Woll needs to be good for 50 or 55. Number five is the first pair of Rielly and Tanev. He says that while acknowledging that Rielly isn't really a #1 and not noticing that the 35 year old Chris Tanev was the number four dman on admittedly more talented defenses in Dallas and in Calgary. Tough guy, defensively responsible, great shot blocker, Im not sure he is up to the first pair load and match-ups. He wasn't the difference maker for Dallas in the playoffs last year. So again Hayes' cause for optimism seems to be on the edge of being a cause for concern. Both these things need to work out for a chance for the Leafs to be different and better.

Keefe did not do a good job, stop repeating this over and over again, it's simply not true. He had a stacked team that could have been coached by literally anybody and would still make the playoffs. All these years he did NOTHING to build the identity of this team, all these years he spent patting star players on the back during the season and making stupid decisions while getting outcoached in the playoffs. He had absolutely no backbone or charisma. Him calling Jimmy Vesey "vanilla" is downright laughable.
