I'm not convinced he won't get 12.5. Everyone overpays for a UFA not to mention a top winger in the league. I get that Leafs fans have soured on the guy but denying he is top10 winger in the league is just not reality. For example, he was making 6mil you would want him even 9 mil. The salary cap will have gone up three straight years by the time his contract kicks in to 12.5. Hardest thing to do in any pro sport is get elite talent, and no one thinks Mitch is not elite. Plenty of GM's will convince themselves that Mitch in their system will be a different result.

The Leafs have just one option and that is tell the Marner camp that he is not going to be extended under any circumstances and leave it at that. Let him either become a partner in putting together a mutually beneficial trade or come back for one last year and play for his future somewhere else. Marner walking into free agency for nothing is not ideal but an even worse scenario is overpaying him again and continuing with a top heavy cap structure.
@100Crackfist5 ай бұрын
Why is that the one option? Because you want Mitch gone? Honestly there are like 3 options. Wait a year, you want cap space you get it as you are not resigning JT team is still good, and they may want to see what things are like under new coach. Extend him, again set a limit no more than Matthews but 11.5-12.5 for 8yrs - again by the time his extension kicks in JT is off the books. If you can't agree to term, ask for the teams he wants a sign and trade to. If Mitch won't play ball at all you leak your efforts to media so when you lose him for nothing he shoulders all the blame (even though it is Shanny's fault for not trading him before his NMC kicked in).

Marner isn't worth half of what he is getting paid. The Leafs are full of selfish players who refuse to relinquish some pay in order to make the whole team better. When you have the core 4 all SELFISH you will never ever win at least one or two have to be willing to leave money on the table bc of the bigger picture making areas of the roster much better. Usually teams that win the cup will sacrifice some money for the opportunity to be a true contender for the cup. Everyone talks about the player having all the leverage - WRONG - tell the player if you don't agree to a trade, you will be sitting in the press box until you agree. Felt like revisionist history here with the fickle fan’s sentiment. The hockey analysts (including renowned former players) all severely critiqued Marner’s play during the first round…and referenced past years as illustrative of the same. There is only logic behind the backlash of fans who see the obvious and feel ripped off from the bait and switch on this guy. He has to own this toxicity and either thrive or do what’s right by his teammates. They don’t deserve this.

Playing out the final year of his contract is a very risky move.

The NHL must abolish the NTC BS, teams should be able to trade any player to where ever they want, NHLPA has way too much leverage.

If Marner doesn't wavie his nmc for a good trade for all he plays on the 3rd line with McMann and Minten. 2nd pp and 1st pk

“ Change” Will happen when “ Toepick” and JT is gone!…………. $22 million to play with right there!………… that’s a lot…………. You can bring in some good talent and younger to boot…………….. Willy is a better player hands down than Marner…………. He earns his💰💰💰

Mitch has all the cards until he reaches the open market and realizes that no one will pay him more than $9M... unless he goes to a crappy team. Good luck to him but it's too much money

Maybe this is all a distraction about the core four for another year until Tavares contract expires. It's what they are not saying that worries me.

Bottom line , the Media needs a story to interest folks to want to know what is happening. Cut back a few reporters and make the money that keeps you viable as a business. As long as you keep hiring folks that didn't play the game in the name of WOKENESS ... feel the effects. Give those women that played Womens sports a channel of their own, they feel that it is as entertaining and is as good others...GOOD. Let them get paid by what ever the Fans watch. You have too many folks surmising what is the player, the GM, the Coach, team mates are thinking. Wait til they express it and report... Too many folks blowing smoke up the consumers butt.

Come on guys all Mitch Marner ever does is blame the media for his problems if he refuses to be traded put him on the fourth line with his tablet so he can look at himself He will have all the Time in the world to look at the plays that he did when he’s only playing four minutes a game

Will Mitch actually learn to hit and not play so differently in playoffs.

Mitch most likely doesnt want an 8 year any way he wants a shorter one like Matthews. Nylander should of gone this year for a goalie and D.. you had your chance... Go Mitch Go.. stay the year and walk.. You dont owe the Leafs a thing. i cannot wait until Nylander is Berube's whipping boy.. no back check Willie

Mitch has all the cards? Not if he's taken off the first PP or PK lines. What if he's dropped to the third line for playing time? An occasional benching for flubs - which he has more often than not. Sorry, the Leafs have all the cards. He'll be crying to get out of here once they start to make his life miserable. He needs to pad his stats next year and the Leafs couching staff can throw a wrench into that. Leafs need Marner's $11M salary cap room, not Mitch Marner.

Why is living up to your contract equated with giving the team the middle finger?

I'm not much of Marner fan or a Leafs fan in general. Yes, Marner is overpaid and, yes, he had a poor recent playoff performance. However, Toronto's problems go way, way beyond anything that might be caused by Marner. The blue line is subpar, and that's putting it mildly. I mean, compare Toronto's blue line to, say, that of the Panthers. There is no comparison. Getting rid of Marner, and now there are increasing rumblings about Tavares and Reilly, will not be the cure-all some of the fanatical fans are hoping for.

He showed his true colors in the last playoff run! Can not be trusted offenceofly or on the defence either!!!! He just gives up. On the play!!! It was his man that just skaked by him to score the series ending going!! Can 't be trusted!!!! Out please!!! Bye

Toronto Management gave these KIDS the f'ing world years ago. That's the problem with NHL, we yell about mistakes now but years later is when people cover it. They need to get Saros somehow out of Nashville, even if that means Nylander !

Marner only has two moves here, sign an extension and play his ass off..... or accept a trade. This fan base will not tolerate him just playing out the season and being a distraction.... he'll be torn to shreds, this fanbase has lost all tolerance and his last contract negotiation has left a bitter taste..
