Will there be a lot of activity at the trade deadline? What could the Canadiens get by dealing Sean Monahan? How will the Flames approach the trade deadline? Will Phil Kessel make an NHL return? TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joins Jay Onrait to share his thoughts on all those topics and more.

why is lindholm the number 1 guy? Monahan has more points and more goals in the same amount of games on less than half the cap hit. Shouldn't Monahan's value be higher if anything?

Late 1st round pick might produce a 2nd or 3rd line player in 4 years. Good chance of a career grinder. If Monahan can put you over the top (not likely) it might be worth it.

Come on Colorado trade for Naz and bring him back to the Avalanche. We know what He brings to the table and we know he fits in well with the Players in Colorado. @@PRIMEHDZIt categorically is not the Habs’ window yet though. The team was in the Cup Final less than three years ago. It is in its rebuilding stage post-Price and post-Weber. We will likely see the them challenge for a playoff spot as of next season and become more competitive for the next 10 years as the youngsters continue to grow (barring the continuation of horrible injury luck). And hey - the Habs’ recent history and current trajectory beats the one playoff round win of the Leafs over the last 20 years, so there’s always that!

It’ll most likely be a second round pick that can be upgraded to a first rounder based on GP in the playoffs. I don’t think it’s a direct first round pick, it’s a conditional first round pick. He’s not the type of player to put playoff teams over the top. He’s more of a complimentary/depth player with health related issues more than anything.
@louisnicolas
@louisnicolas 3 ай бұрын
Conditional 1st round pick would make sense. If players like Andrew Copp, Jason Zucker, and Nick Foligno could each fetch a 1st round pick, I don't see why Monahan could not.
@danielnam9026
@danielnam9026 3 ай бұрын
Health reasons. HIs health was in rapid decline before being a cap dump to Montreal. Copp, Zucker, and Foligno never battled extensive injuries like Monahan did. This isn’t news.. it’s been reported for years.
@louisnicolas
@louisnicolas 3 ай бұрын
@@danielnam9026 Obviously, I know about his injury history. Hence the conditional 1st round pick. If he gets injured and doesn't play in the playoffs, Habs don't get a 1st round pick. Wouldn't be the first time a GM acquires an injury-prone player at the deadline. Bertuzzi had surgery twice last season, and had missed a ton of games before that, and he still ended up getting traded for a 1st round pick at the trade deadline.
@danielnam9026
@danielnam9026 3 ай бұрын
I think teams are more hesitant to give up higher picks and trade for another player who’s more injury prone like Monahan. Bertuzzi’s injury list is not comparable to Monahan’s.
@louisnicolas
@louisnicolas 3 ай бұрын
@@danielnam9026 You're right that Monahan's injury history is a bit more concerning than Bertuzzi's, and yet Bertuzzi has missed more games than Monahan because of injuries over the course of their respective careers, even though Monahan has played a couple more seasons. At least Monahan has shown he has the ability to play while injured (less effectively than when healthy, of course). Because of his injury history he may not be able to get a long-term deal this summer but I think him bouncing back in Montreal and staying healthy this season will increase his value as a rental player.

What is that worth a late first rounder? Like a 29th overall? A pick that “ might “ turn into a “maybe “ 4 years from now? I think Lebrun and every so called experts should look at the big picture , there’s a lot a variables that affects what the habs will want and it’s not a late 1st rounder unless it’s include in a package, the habs will be looking for high quality prospect ( not a defenseman) and they will get it as monahan is very complete and low maintenance Plus the habs had 12 picks at each of their last 3 draft and have 10 for the upcoming , they have way too many prospects on defense and they’ll be forced to trade a few of them , many of those prospects will be looking for pro contract but Montreal is committed to many contracts and are almost at the maximum of 50 pro contract allowed by rules The habs are dying for offense and the defense situation will be a mess next year , the way it looks right now is they could have 15 nhl ready defensemen next season , this will result in a bad evaluation of some of those defensemen and therefor the habs won’t receive the maximum in trades for many of them. The best option would be to package involving monahan and receiving a package that includes Arthur Kaliyev from LA

What William said, the examples are plenty (Ryan O’Reilly, Nick Foligno, Blake Coleman, Barclay Goodrow, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Ryan Hartman, Martin Hanzal and al.) were all middle 6 centers that were traded for 1st rounder at the deadline. Even a completely cooked Tomas Pleckanec got a 2nd rounder and 2 prospects from the Leafs a few years back.

Hes a 2nd line center. All his metrics say that. 55% in the dot(725 draws). .7 career ppg. The only concern is his health. The Canucks should be all over him. He fits under the cap and our first rounder is in the 20th-32nd range. Hes well worth that cost. If you go the Lindholm, Henrique or Guentzel(doesn't fill the 2C hole) route it means trading prospects. He fills the 2c spot well here.

🤣 Sean Monahan is not worth a first round pick, the guy in injury prone spends more time on the IR then he does in the line up, in the past 10 NHL seasons he has only reached 30 goals or more twice, his highest ever +/- is +8 and the and the furthest he has gone in the playoffs is the 2nd round. If LeBrun thinks a team will give up a first round pick for all that good thing he ain't a GM

@louisnicolas yeah i do watch hockey thanks been watching it 30 years 👍 if monahan was worth a first round pick then why is he only paid 1.9 mil? If he is that great why would the flames trade him for future considerations? Not denying the fact when he's healthy he can be useful but definitely not for a first rounder in return.
@louisnicolas
@louisnicolas 3 ай бұрын
@@seanfallon9376 The Flames traded him because injuries had slowed him down and he wasn't worth $6M anymore. They also had to get rid of his contract so they'd have enough cap space to sign Kadri, after losing Gaudreau for nothing. Their hands were tied and they were getting desperate, hence the 1st round pick Treliving gave away so Montreal would take his contract. He re-signed for only $1.9M in Montreal because it's a good fit for him (good chemistry, lots of ice time) and he has an agreement with Hughes that he'll get traded to a playoff team by the deadline. His lower cap hit makes him easier to move. He turned down a better offer last summer but considering that he missed most of last season it probably wasn't very high anyway. Why would he be worth a 1st roung pick? Simply put, supply and demand. Him and Henrique are the best centers available as rentals as of now. Henrique has a 10 team no trade list and his cap hit is $4M higher than Monahan's, which makes Monahan easier to acquire for some of the cap-strapped teams. There's roughly 10 teams possibly looking for a middle-six center with only so many viable options. That allows Hughes to drive up Monahan's acquisition cost. Plus, you have to consider the fact that Monahan has played like a legit 2nd line center this year (on pace for 60 points) and he's stayed healthy so far. If Montreal gets a 1st round pick I expect that it'll be a conditional one in case Monahan gets hurt again.
