I have to say, I love Dave on OverDrive. They should look at making him a permanent fixture. He just has that great complimentary voice. Sign the man to a full time job or a more permanent role as a regular guest.

When Tavares first arrived.... he truly was a better hockey player than Matthews at the time. Plus... throw in Matthews getting charged and not telling the team... I AGREE with John Tavares being the 25th captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was a good decision and you couldn't ask for a more wise and professional player to be your captain. But, I do agree with making the switch at this point in both of their respected careers.

He wasnt! And the only reason Matthews didnt get the captaincy is because he was charged with disorderly conduct! Thats it, thats all! Everyone knew he was the best player on the team but you cannot be given leadership role on a team while being immature in the community. Thats al it was. First year Tavares gets paired with Marner who gave him a chance at 50 goals but got 47 which was 10 more than his highest in a season. Once Marner removed he went back to his old stats. Biggest mistake the leafs made was bringing Tavares to Toronto! They didnt need him or that crazy contract and would have had the likes of Kadri, Hyman probably still on the team since both wanted to stay badly in Toronto! Toronto would have been better off with Matthews, Hyman and either Nylander or Marner with Kadri centering the 2nd line. When Bunting was available he wouldve been great on the 2nd line. And could have afforded it without 12 million spent annually on Tavares. Hope hes gone or takes a huge pay cut if they resign him. He owes Toronto a discount.

I like here in Winnipeg We didn't take the best player on team in Scheifele,Connor or Morrissey But AdamLowry who hits,fights,charecter and leader.

I agree that's important to some degree I also feel like Trouba in NYR also deserved the C. Problem is there are only a few players in the league like Lowry and Trouba and Toronto doesn't have that guy. There is also only 1 top goal scorer in the league and that gets you a C on any team.

As a Habs fan who wants the Cup back in Canada, Reilly should be captain as he elevates his games in the playoffs and signes a decent contract. Matthews disappears and the fact he drains every single $ and doesn’t commit as long as term as he can doesn’t scream commitment to other players on the team but selfishness. Captaincy is not about the best player, it’s about commitment and leadership

ya he should have been but wasnt it because of what happened with his Mooning issue that he didnt get it? He made a bit of a boo boo and because of that immature behavior at the time, he wasnt given the C. Tavares was on board from the day he was given the C that Matthews would eventually get it. This should push him to be more assertive and push his game to the next level. Imagine, his game at the next level. We all know that Matthews thrives on the challenges and needs the same effort from his teammates for the leafs to win the cup. Watch out if they get good goaltending!
