Bryan Hayes and Dave Feschuk discuss how the captaincy change from John Tavares to Auston Matthews will impact the former captain and Tavares’ role going forward, Matthews being named the 26th captain in franchise history, the pressure that comes with wearing the C in Toronto, will that change the fortunes of the team and more on the change in leadership within the Maple Leafs. The guys also touch on Nathan Rourke returning to the CFL and Matt Kuchar’s decision to play the end of his final round alone on Monday.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they're giving Matthews the Captaincy is to see how Marner handles it. Will there be envy or will Marner be a good teammate and grown man. Either way, I can't see Toronto paying Marner $12 million + next year unless they make it far in the playoffs.

And look for the video from a few years ago where he chewed out Muzzin publicly in front of his mates for accidentally bumping into him during a practice. If I was Muzz I kick his butt all over the ice for that. Anything else you need AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA eheheheh?

Classic highest scorer equals captain mistake. I don't get best leader on the team vibes from Matthews. Don't saddle him with those responsibilities, just let him go out there and do his thing.

Leafs are a great reg season team. Moving a letter C to someone else's chest won't change your playoff woes. The core must be split up , team needs grit, goalie, defensive dmen with attitude.

matthews being the captain won't improve his production. if anything it should reduce it, just because of the extra mental strain. I think just being able to sit on the bench and not really worry is better.

Well, originally I would have had Tavares passing cup to Reilly than mathews after winning. Now mathews needs to pass it to Tavares 1st hands down

As much as I love this change in Captaincy. Sadly it’s not gonna make a difference the way the NHL is run today and had been ran for 31 yrs. Canadian teams are 0-31 since Gary Bettman came into the League. Last Canadian team win was the Habs. No one remembers 2nd place. Look at the winning % of Canadian teams winning the cup before Bettman. And do the same after Bettman came into the league. It’s a sad but true story.

The press conference is going to be awkward, I can't think of anything they can say that makes the fans feel like anything is different here... its a guy who hasn't got it done passing the C to a guy who hasn't got it done. The only thing that happens here is a cloud of weird over the team.... and pressure now on Mathews, maybe thats the reason, accountability for the C in the playoffs.

Disagree with you...the timing is correct on the timing of this change...Matthew's should not have been given the captaincy before now...the Leafs have made some very good moves this off season...the core is still intact as the Panthers and Bruins won't be as good...and the odds are in their favor to go deeper in the playoffs...his new captaincy is a moral boost for the team and Tavares can be put on the 3rd or even 4th line...

Did someone not tell these guys that Tavares was okay not being Captain when he arrived in Toronto. The Leafs went without a Captain for Tavares's first year. So why the whole segment on how the guy will feel not being the captain? this guy will be just fine with his millions, don't you worry about Johnny T Cash

Expect no changes even with Matthews as Captain - Leafs have good regular seasons and lose in the first playoff rounds for the rest of Auston’s new contract. 😀

No. Matthews is the big issue no one wants to see. Matthews has zero leadership and winning mindset. He's weak and only care about individual success. He truly represents the Leafs franchise.

If your captain is supposed to be a leader of team, then Morgan Reilly has proven to be one of those. It’s it’s supposed to be the best player then yes; Matthews.
