I had a idea while watching this video maybe franchise can make a league like u enter the league with 30 other players and you randomly get assigned a team but it is spread out over 10 years you have to build the best franchise and win the most cups you can make trades through a game chat aspect and each season is about a 5 days long lasting about 2 months I think it would really bring life back to franchise mode and give people a reason to stay active in it and maybe at the end of the year like June July the top 31 people per console go in to a finale and they win a prize

YES! It's ridiculous to be the best player in the league and just get 2 offers from the same teams that are always only 2 year deals. It's near impossible to get on a team you want, meanwhile other superstars (McDavid, Mackinnon, Matthews) seem to be constantly switching teams.

The sad matter of fact is that the final joke about wanting to watch the review for NHL 22, just watch this back, is highly likely to be dead on. The sad truth is that EA have the monopoly on the NHL and have zero reasons to improve or be better or even different from year to year, because there's no competition. So many glitches in this game. Scouting, chemistry, trades all broken in Franchise mode. The overalls in the creation zone is broken. Be A Pro gets very repetitive after awhile with the conversation system, and why they removed full seasons in the CHL for juniors is so stupid. And the free agency for BAP is still awful. Get two teams to choose from, and can't negotiate or even see the roster before choosing. But HUT is ready day one as per usual. EA looks like they are going to take one step forward, but they just take two steps back again as always. Also, ROSTER SHARING needs to be in this game because the rosters they have are so BAAAAAAAAD. Please 2K come back to the NHL video game franchise.

Be-A-Pro added some cosmetic stuff but actually _took out_ one thing I liked: being able to play a full CHL season (or four). Plus goalie controls are still overly-complicated trash, _and_ no new jerseys so far except Buffalo's... Might stick with NHL 20 to be honest. 5.5/10

I’ve owned every game since 93 I agree with all of this and these are the things the game needs in its overhaul 1. All star game with skill comp ( used in franchise and be a pro) 2. More in depth creation mode for eashl and players 3. Record books for be a pro and franchise with commentary about being close to a record 4. As stated a neighbourhood 2k style be a pro mode or eashl mode 5. A be a pro or franchise that has years with World Cup or Olympics where your players can be chosen and you can play the event (have it every 4 years during be a pro or franchise to keep those fresh. 6. Increased presentation for modes 7. Basically take a 2k nba game and merge it with nhl

I've hated basketball for the longest time but and as scummy as 2kgames are with their ingame ads and gambling mechanics, they really nailed that career mode so well, not only giving you a deep pre draft story but kept giving you things to do and unlock throughout the whole season. EA could learn a lot from it

Out of all the NHL reviews out there, the only one worth listening to is Bardown's. Z's and Corwin's insight is the most comprehensive. And by far the most honest. Radical suggestions in the end but I would be all for it if EA considers it for the NHL series. Good job guys!

I literally agree with every single word said in this video, and it’s sad. I’ve been buying and playing nhl since NHL 07 and I seriously feel like giving up on the series so I can stop wasting my money. The same repeat over and over again with no drastic differences that makes me ACTUALLY wanna continue playing....I’ve been a hockey fan all my life with zero interests of any other sport up until I tried nba 2k20...it was a game changer. The gameplay was amazing, online modes were endless and the complete opposite of shallow like nhl. I fell so in love with the story mode to the point where i started to actually watch basketball games on tv and follow up with teams and players JUST because I started playing nba, A VIDEO GAME. I always loved playing be a pro as a kid, seeing my last name on the back of an nhl jersey was always awesome. For the last couple years I’ve just hated be a pro and as I’ve started to branch into nba 2K I was done with NHL be a pros. However this year has been a step in the right direction and even though it’s not nearly as good as 2K, I have enjoyed playing it so far. Plus the milestones page looks great and the record book is a nice addition as well

I generally buy every second year just because it is essentially the same game but with new player ratings. The idea of it being free is different, could possibly make a 6v6 mode where you get a position and play in either a party or with randoms. Where it would be a 10-minute game, can pick your desired position, and you are assigned an in-game rank to kind of keep the games balanced.

And those games were adored by their fans and they listened to what changes should be made. I agree with Z, the "smaller development team" thing is such bs. They have more than enough money, technology and resources to make the changes we need. Bottom line, for me to get legitimately excited about the next NHL game, they need to overhaul the game. I'd be happy if they took the next two years to make a new game. They need to take a step back and re-code a lot of the fundamental parts of the game. If they're concerned about losing profits that time frame, just charge $5 for an update to NHL 21 that'll include a new game mode or something worth the money. And come back with an NHL 23 that has lots to offer.

Devs haven’t done enough to fix the issues that were in NHL 20. BAP is definitely improved but still major issues with dialogue, players getting traded in unrealistic situations (Ovechkin goes to the Leafs in 2020, teams trading mid round draft picks for players that were JUST drafted in first round, etc). No improvements to gameplay whatsoever.

I think one thing to look at is the growth of esports. San Jose sharks and the Washington capitals are having esports tournaments early on in the game combining for a total of $45k if the esports community continues to grow and nhl teams keep sponsoring events, I feel like eventually nhl will be forced to improve the game more and more.

I think another thing they should explore is putting it on PC. As of right now, it's pretty much the only major sports game that's only on console. 2k, Madden, and Fifa all have PC versions that account for a small percentage of sales, but a percentage nonetheless. It might open the game up to a larger audience.

I think the NHL games are not bad, it’s just unfortunate seeing it be the same game pretty much every year. Like it’s shocking that we finally have more advanced stats for a team in franchise, which has been in pretty much every 2K game. Also in create a team, it’s been the same 10 arenas to choose from since at least NHL 18 (when I started playing). Why are there all these arena options for EASHL, and you can’t put them all in create a team. It just doesn’t make sense to me

I’m a big fan of BAP and am happy with the upgrades they did. I got a couple things I’d like to see added. I’d like the mode to be a bit more difficult to simulate real life. Meaning not everyone is going to go first in the draft. Not everyone is going to crack an NHL lineup, or AHL lineup for that matter. I’d like to see the ECHL incorporated as well as some of the adult European Leagues they have. I know most won’t like that idea, but to me it’d bring a little bit more authenticity to BAP.

You summed up BAP pretty well. I wish there were more challenges and ways for you to be more involved with your brand, ie meeting fans, doing a skills competition etc. Also, I could really do with new sports commentators. James Cyulski’s voice makes me want perforate my ear drums. At least offer some DLC for alternative well known commentators. Ray Ferraro is ok but there are better play by play analysts out there too.

You guys hit the nail on the head. What frustrates me the most is that at one time or another, chel had all the modes and features I wanted but they have been taken out or changed in time. Why is it that when I choose defensive defensemen for my be a pro, I’m expected to get the goal? Why isn’t there a tournament mode where you can make an international tournament? Why isn’t Mike Bossy on the islanders alumni team? Why aren’t the black Buffalo sabres jerseys available to use? So many small things could be added to the existing game to make it great. There’s no technological reason that they shouldn’t be. Very annoying.

Been saying for years they should release HUT as a standalone game. Make it free like you say, and they will make a killing with people buying packs. They could have player packs, specialty jersey packs, arena packs, retro logo packs. The key is to still make it possible to grind out a high end team for free, while offering the chance to pay for the flashy, but not necessary, upgrades.

Open world skating/EASHL game entry (2K style) in an environment like the Ottawa Rideau Canal. That would take the game immediately from what it is to actually being a cornerstone of the hockey community. Hell maybe even then offer a limited access game license for free that lets you skate a F2P version of that environment and play in some EASHL games or buy game tokens or something.

Needs a frostbite or next gen total rebuilt engine. A super star player needs to feel like one compared to a fourth liner. Their points should be rare. Take away skill zoning defense. Where literally the Defense will collapse after a few seconds of not controlling them. If a player is in a passing lane, a pass should have a 1-5% chance of getting through an elite defender. Take away cross crease by making only elite players be able to score, because that realistic. For a be a pro or GM mode, use the face scans of players you have and get recorded voice lines you can talk to before and after games. In the locker room between periods for a pump Up. I'm a guy who plays season mode. I'll go thru 4 or 5 seasons with different teams and do fantasy drafts. I enjoy that a lot but I like to keep the goalie equipment current. Have they added any new pad styles or goalie masks? Some of the ones they have aren't even close to what the real life guy wears. Also really hoping for improvements to AI like going for a change or defenders abandoning the front of the net leading to goals. Thanks.

My vision of NHL 22 should be as follows: - when you start you only have one mode - be a pro and start with your player - once your drafted to the NHL, you enter a league with other ONLINE real life players and their be a pro’s - your player remains in that league until you retire - this would combine franchise, dynasty, etc - when you play games you actually may face half human and half computer - depends on who is online with their be a pro - you then at times play a modified versus or eashl - no one quits (plagued in eashl) because it affects your Be a Pro directly My point is the following modes should be eliminated: Online Versus Franchise Ones EASHL They would still be options - but, more focused on you buy the game - you control your player - develop a better story. Again, should only have a menu as follows: BE AN NHL PLAYER BE A GM ONLY HUT EASHL FOR TEAM PLAY ONLY Put all your energy into the above modes and lessen the other modes Most modes end up a glitch fest, superior players (ones who play everyday and can) Also eliminates the purchase to make your team better They want a game that does not feel shallow…… crank up NHL 22 - LIVE THE TRUE HOCKEY LIFE is the new title and stop the madness of empty feel options

I know cross crease goals make up an unrealistic share of the goals scored in chel, but when you get scored on any other way you feel cheesed. Like sure cross creases suck but I feel players hate getting scored on via rebound and shots from the point

Honestly I personally like it. BAP has improved but there's still room to do so. Franchise has also improved imo with the trade deadline minigame. But also because of the options to have better quality draft classes

While it was great to have included NHL 94 Rewind free with pre-order, EA dropped the ball on that game by not including online play and not giving players a choice between the Sega and SNES versions. I like the Sega version but honestly prefer the SNES for 94. If it was NHL 95 I would definitely choose the Sega version. 95 was the first year of season mode. In 94 after you win the Cup in best of 7 playoff series, there really is not a whole lot else do to. The rosters won't be updated throughout the season. Thanks for the memories EA, but there was so much more potential for that game to shine.

The only reason I watch US College sports was NCAA Football which was my favourite sports game... the only reason I keep an Xbox 360 around. So your are right people like games even if they are not into the sport (plenty of UK friends got into Hockey that way). The issue is as mentioned if you remove cost they will just abandon the single player stuff, as happened with a number of games that went that way. I think the solution if you want a triple A game with the costs you need to OVERHAUL the whole thing. Use the new consoles as a point of rebirth for NHL 22. I appreciate that Be A Pro mode is better if not perfect so that is good but yeah this game needs more than just nicer wrapping. Or worse, new console, no features.

I buy the game every year and the closing statements are so true it hurts. No improvements will be made for NHL 2022 and i'll likely still buy the game at launch and play it with my buddies which tells EA that they don't need to put more work in to improve if i'm buying it anyways.

I will say that EASHL actually made stats matter more. Last year it didn't matter how the build, everyone was the same speed and same shooting ability. I think this year, at least speed wise, it actually matters. On the other hand, it still seems as though some games feels like the game wants you to lose. The other teams AI will make saves and defense will make plays while yours gets scored on endlessly. Does anyone else experience this?

Here's my idea: Make one, definitive NHL game. This means that each user only needs to purchase the game once, and EA can make money through other means of monetization, like an in-game store for online modes that sells items that are 100% cosmetic. With the start of each season, one big seasonal update can take place that updates rosters, the game engine, the graphics and maybe includes some reworks for game modes. That way, throughout an entire year people can still play the game, and the dev team can focus on stuff like improving some of the more lackluster game modes, instead of developing a whole new game and only introducing a few new things. Over the course of the games life, Franchise Mode can be reworked, some new online modes can be added, and many new features alongside those. People would feel less upset because they are only paying once, and the devs can focus on what we really care about.

Okay I know my comment will get lost somewhere given this was posted around 2-3 weeks ago but my suggestion would be for EA to take something out of GTA's handbook and stop going out of their way to release a completely new game every year. They could just make the roster updates + add new game modes and maybe even add new gameplay tweaks. Part of the problem is if they make a radical change to the gameplay it could completely dismantle the EA NHL Franchise. My point being when they update the game substantially they could THEN release the newer game rather then recycling a carbon copy, slightly updated version for $79.99. There's no way they would ever do that because they need money but I think it's a pretty smart idea.

I get this game every year, all I ever want out it is more offline customization. Basically, just make all the EASHL customization available for create a player, edit player, and create a team. I just want more offline customization. More jersey and logo options in create a team, more equipment options in create/edit a player, and finally some vintage helmets and goalie masks and an option to have no helmet. Bobbly Orr is not a legend in the game, neither is Bobby Hull and countless other Bobbies and legends that didn’t wear helmets. I’d just like it to be an option. Some of these questions may have already been discussed & if so feel free to direct me to those comments but after seeing this I've come away with a couple of questions and one big thought, the thought being that the game is decent if you like multiplayer stuff but if you just want to play by yourself than there is zero reasons to get the new game. My questions would be 1. Do you think that EA needs someone like a 2k to come out as a competitor to give EA a reason to push boundaries and try to improve their titles cause right now to me it seems like EA can get away with little more than updated rosters because they are the only NHL game on the market. 2. Would doing more with Women's Hockey be a feasible addition to get more people buying future titles. 3. Should EA implement different versions of the franchise mode so in one version you take the role of an owner where everything is open to you, another version which is the current one of being the GM, then you have a coach version that allows you more movement between teams either by your own choice or by getting fired, perhaps you get to a point where a job in the European leagues is the only option left and even a player mode which will take some aspects from the Be a Pro mode but you can take over the life of a current NHL player & you have different career goals depending on if you select a player who is near the end of their on ice career versus someone who is a rookie or in their prime. finally, go away (I'm keeping it family friendly here) with the NHL 94 mode stuff. The original NHL 94 was a major reason why I became a hockey fan all the way down here in Australia, I kinda fell out with the NHL game series back around 2010 when life limited the amount of gaming time I had but if I had known about the NHL 94 mode in NHL 14, I can guarantee that it would have been enough to make NHL 14 at least a Day 1 purchase if not a pre-order. So maybe I'm that 1 guy but I am proud to be that 1 guy.

No one is going to see this but here I go anyway. Here are a few things I have noticed and really small things EA can add to Franchise: 1) ADD AN ALL STAR GAME. Literally every other sports games has an all star game, and its a joke that NHL doesn't have one. 2) NEW STANLEY CUP CELEBRATION ANIMATION. It's been the same since NHL14. 3) The record book is great. But it gets glitched often. Half way through year 1, Jordan Binnington became the 4th all time games played leader with 1,756. It makes no sense. 4) ADD A BOX SCORE. Its a piss poor effort from a billion dollar company that you can't see a box score for games when you can do it in literally, once again, any other sports game. It is a really simple add. 5) Improve the trade deadline mini game and add a free agent frenzy? It would be fun to add an interview process, you make an offer and the player has a "top 5" and chooses. It would add a layer of depth to something that has been annoying for years. Also, make it so that you can take an offer away. Nothing is more annoying that making a contract offer, regretting it, and then not being able to rescind the offer. Once again, you can do that with ease with any other sports game.

First game I don’t think I’ll be buying since about NHL 15. I’m a guy who likes the roster updates and franchise mode, but it wouldn’t be hard at all to add GM Connected which a lot of people want back. I also consider myself a fairly good player and once you play against other good players i find all the opponent does is dilly dally in the corner until the one timer opens up which I think I’m done with for now .

It would be cool if the Be a GM or Franchise mode or whatever they call it now gave you the ability to structure contracts so you can play with the cap, negotiate no-movement clauses, improve relations with other franchises to facilitate better trades and, you know, things GMs actually do -- instead of micromanaging the price of popcorn in the stadium. Also: can someone ask some NHLers how concerned they are about the maintenance of the 2nd level of the parking structure outside the stadium -- and how that directly affects their on-ice performance? While we're at it -- can we ask why a multimillion dollar sports franchise would omit the money needed to clean the bathrooms in the budget 10 years in a row? While we have those NHL players on the line -- ask them how the state of the bathrooms on concourse level 3 section 306 is directly affecting their play on the ice. I would do it myself -- but I'm to busy micromanaging the sweat shop that sews the letters on the back of the knock off jerseys they're selling out of a Honda Civic 3 blocks from the stadium so my 3rd pairing D is a +1

would be fun to see what they could do if they went on a 2 or 3 year cycle like the UFC games instead of a game every year. they could still have hut between games, come out with new roster updates (maybe make an update in august every year to put all the offline modes to start in the right year so the drafted players are on the right teams and such. and then in that extra year or two work on significant change to Franchise and Be a Pro so that the experience is new to every game also like UFC when you play career in the UFC games it feels different ever new game you can tell they worked to change it (not always for the better IMO but they're always working to make the next game different) won't happen. I think free-to-play would ruin the franchise, because EA owns it, and they would comepletely mutilate the game with microtransactions everywhere. Or maybe they'd go so far as to remove the parts that I enjoy about the game. I really only play these games for franchise, BAP, and if i'm hanging with friends who wanna play. Those game modes don't suit the typical free-to-play business model, and making a game enjoyable for people like me would basically be a distraction from their real money makers. Not that i'm gonna buy NHL 21 anyway. This review has told me roughly everything i wanted to know about the game, and it's not enough of a step up for me to want to spend $80 on it. So thanks for a descriptive review.
