I hate to say it, goalies shouldn’t get paid more than 9 until the nhl cap goes up. Goalies wear out physically way faster than players. Yeah, they can steals games here and there. But they can’t win a whole season for you unfortunately, they can’t score for you. Colorado proved this to you a few years ago. You can win a cup with an average to bad goaltending performance.

I disagree. If you look at Shesterkin for example, a goalie can absolutely straight up steal and win games for a team. When you have a world class goalie like that, having that security in the back end is invaluable, and deserve a bag in my opinion. When the cap goes up I think Shesterkin gets at least 10, and goalies in general could make more and I think deserve more if they are top tier.

As good as Shesterkin is, he hasn't won. In a copy cat league, GMs watched the likes of Aiden Hill and Binnington carry their teams to championships. Elite goaltending isn't needed to win a championship. If he gets the money he's asking for, he'll have to win to actually reset the market. If anything, he'll end up like Bobrovsky - be considered overpaid and one of the worst contracts in the league - until he does win.

It's a case by case basis. Rangers feel like they need an elite goalie so they'll pay. The GM will look at the team's DNA and see where they lack the x-factor. I guess Rangers feel a goalie is needed to get over the hump. Funny how that hasn't dawned on Toronto. They have the fire power but they need better defence / goaltending but haven't addressed it at all.

@@MisterMister5893 except Rangers have always had an elite goalie. Since 2005 they’ve either had Lundqvist or Shesterkin. That’s 20 years of elite goaltending and only one finals appearance to show for it. That extra $3M per season can be a difference maker.
