My dad was a ranger in the mid 80’s thru the late 90’s. He was never home, mom always told us he was in “Germany”. Come to find out years after he died that Germany was Panama, the gulf, Somalia and Kosovo. The time he was around for quality time was barely a couple months out the year. Weird feeling having a dad that kept from us he was a highly motivated and deadly man. He died 5 days after 9/11/01 almost like it broke his heart. I’m 30 now, former mp. Miss you pop

True. I would say SF isn't always the "best," but they're a special breed. For example: I met a guy in SF who went to dive school 5 times, he failed each time by failing a water exercise..... He failed each time not because he gave up, but because he drowned each time and had to be resuscitated. Just a different breed of person.

My father enlisted and chose 18E in 1969 because it was the most stateside training time outside of medical roles (if you were drafted, you went into the 11B meatgrinder, if you volunteered, you got to pick your job if you could pass the test). And, being the radio guy, he knew all the tricks -- if the weather was right, he could talk to a HAM in Dallas that could call Dad's then-wife on the phone and patch the radio through.

The biggest misconception is that SF doesn't care about family. Great leadership at the SFOD-A team level which is what matters the most, understands that when a team member needs to take a knee, they will take a knee. The mission will continue and when that team member is ready to return, there are no hard feelings. Also, there is something to be said about Quality time vs Quantity with family. Just two cents from a 24 year and going SF SGM, former 11 Bang Bang. Have a great Labor day weekend 🫡🇺🇲 SOF Truth I Humans are more important than hardware. People - not equipment - make the critical difference. The right people, highly trained and working as a team, will accomplish the mission with the equipment available. On the other hand, the best equipment in the world cannot compensate for a lack of the right people.

It is all about being in the right role that you are best suited for. I was called into my Commanding Officer office told I had been shortlisted as a potential officer candidate. I asked for 24hours to consider and weigh up the options. Next day I put up that as a soldier and NCO I consider myself better than average. The boss said definitely high in the best five percent. I then told the boss. As an officer I saw my potential as average at best. Therefore I would be most effective for the unit at my current level. Doing the job and improving the standards of troops on the ground. I agree with you about the laser focus of SF

I knew two SF guys in college, built like fridges, and were there after leaving the military. They took 5 bullets between the two. Every time a drunk ROTC kid tried to talk about how badass they were, and how they want to “see combat,” these guys would shut them down hard. It was a traumatic and difficult time in their lives, and they don’t regret it. However, they’re not stupid enough to think that the only reason people don’t join the military, yet alone SF, is because they “couldn’t make it.”

When I was asked for a reply about how I felt accomplishing so much, and I turned the opportunity down. I was scared of the mission. When asked about the mission, I replied "To foment revolution in foreign countries by training opposing forces to the current gov't." I didn't want to go to combat with other country's troops behind me. Never mentioned that anecdote to anyone after that. I like what you said alot. Scouts out!❤

I eventually became a shamming sh*tbag due to the SF recruitment attempts, and abuse of my labor. If you work hard in the Army, you just get used. More and more. Despite recognition, I was a victim of racial discrimination and very poor, toxic leadership. I wasn't able to pick up my E5 while in that unit. Though, I reclassed to another MOS and I'm in a faaaaar better environment. All I'll say is my last unit was 3-8 CAV.

That's actually comforting to know that some regular infantry or whatever have & use what it takes just like SF. It means they're peppered throughout the forces. That's an awesome edge to have in a regular infantry battle. Leaders of nations can be unbelievably cruel so I'm glad we have the military we have even with all our faults. I wish more combat vets were the majority of our representatives. JOCKO WILLINK FOR PRESIDENT. It blows my mind that people don't hold this opinion. Healthy combat vets should run a nation who's been at war basically since our inception. I think we would back off with the wars & proxy wars. Keep our military just as strong, use military budget in an intelligent way. Anyway, there it is

5th group was deployed with my Company in Syria... Those guys were crazy, they gave me and another soldier a bag full of goodies, MP5s with suppressers and Claymore type of stuff.

My father in law turned down being a scout helicopter pilot in the SF. He flied Kiowas and trained troops for scout helis in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was in Bosnia way back when, and he did many missions in Central America on military Drug operations. He is still an instructor at Fort Rucker in AL, they are now using a new helicopter. The last training Kiowas were retired last year. He’s a family guy at heart, I think that’s why he turned down the SF contract from fort Campbell

True. I was married when I was in, and made many career decisions based on that. I was offered an airborne, and rip slot at osut that I turned down because I already had orders to Colorado, my wife was excited about it, and I missed her. If only I had known how everything was going to turn out I'd have taken those slots.

I’m sorry about that. But if you did what you felt was right at the time, then no need to sulk over that. There’s a reason you made those decisions. Who knows, maybe you wouldn’t be here right now if you did go down that road. Better divorced and alive then dead and widowed.

Same thing with my bf. Im not military so forgive me if i get stuff wrong but in marine basic he kept getting told he should go active and maybe even got a marsoc offer iirc, but he'd rather work, try to get a degree, and he didnt want to leave his family

Had a freshy Cpl go through MARSOC selection then deny it because he talked to the MARSOC guys and realized the op tempo was higher and they weren’t a fast and loose as he thought. He was already a Recon Marine mind you.

You could argue that with almost any profession. I'm sure there is so much talent we will never witness. Like I knew this kid in grade school that is so much funnier than any comic I've seen

i think the family aspect is a complete joke in comparison to the other hardships you will be facing in special forces, the training is brutal, the missions are insanely risky, the treks are relentless especially with the high luggage equipment you will be carrying, it's all a cohesively insane task,. quite honestly my family would be in the back of my mind with me getting out alive being in the front.

I always thought that being special forces was hard physically but as I got older and talked to more people and heard there stories it really is the long times away that you spend from your family and just having a normal life being special forces is badass but definitely not worth the headache I wouldn’t make a good special forces soldier either I don’t even want to join the regular army

I once meet an infantry E-7 that had Jump Master, Air Assault, Pathfinder, EIB, CIB and Ranger School Other time I saw a SG guy that had CIB, Air Born and CIB I feel that the grunt was more dedicated than the SF guy You’re right about there are soldiers with amazing potential but not everyone wants to be sf

It's a ton easier doing that in the Army. A lot less of the annoying prrconception that you are a killing machine, part of a brotherhood, hoora, semper fi etc. In the Army you train to do your job and can just relax otherwise. Marines are Marines no matter what the MOS, so you get so much indoctrination around you.

I could do it physically but I do not have the mentality for it for sure. I couldn't handle the psychological pressure without anger or whatever. Thought about going to special forces, warrant officer, or some other high speed path but I was too invested in getting out and with not having to deal with other people. I'm not cut out for any of it.

What about SF national guard ? Seems like you would have plenty of family time and from what I’ve heard they are big on making sure you get that time with your family. Please advise
