I just purchased the TSPROF Kadet black from gritomatic last week. I really like it but kinda wish i would’ve bought the K03 instead. The main reason i went with the Kadet was for ease of storage in my shop which has limited space. The main problem i have with it are the screws in the jaws, they are tight enough in the threads were i have to hold my knife and try to hold the sharpener to keep it from moving so that i can lock my knife in the jaws. I’m planning on adding some anti seize to the treads of the screws. Maybe that will help. The only other issue i have is for the money it should come with the single jaw knife holder and the extend angle fillet jaw knife holder. I do however think it is a very nice sharpener that I’m overall happy with. PS mine came with a second stopper on the rod so you don’t cut yourself out scratch you knives. You just have to move the little plastic parking device to the stopper so you can still use it.

I've seen this sharpners system a while ago and I think it's the most advanced system exist. I'm a knifemaker and DIY guy, and I like to design tools that meet my expectations. This one I would not change at all- it's briliant.. The constuction predicts all blades (long, shorl, thick, thin, razors, choppers). Great choise and well invested money Steve!

Damn, wish I had seen this back when you posted it. The Kadet is over $400 now and the K03 is $765. If the K03 was only $465, I'd definitely get it over the kadet, but it's about $350 more than the kadet now. Guess they heard your issue with the price point and said "don't worry, we'll fix it..." 😂 Thanks so much for this review though. Answered a lot of questions I had

I got this system a couple months ago. The main issue I had was the handle took up all the spring tension from the stone holder. It failed after a few uses. I solved this by using a drill stop to take up the spring tenison and act as a stone holder; I also bought new 6mm rods - one complete 500mm rod and two 250mm rods to use with the convex adaptor - to solve the other issue which was too much flex between the two guide rod sections. Hope this helps any future Kadet users.

I’ve had one a while also with no issues but have seen another person in the tsprof facebook group with the same issue. I have also seen people easily damage the grub screws on the stone holder. And worst I saw someone snap a small pin that holds the main body in place when it “clicks” up. That guy updated saying that tsprof replaces his unit in that case

This was a great review and PF had an awesome video too. I keep coming back to the idea of getting a WEN water wheel setup and just putting a better wheel on it like a Tormek or something. I think it's also semi fair to say higher price sharpeners can be justified in price somewhat if you just sharpen some blades for people. If you have a decent setup and know how to be efficient you can sharpen knives for like 10-15 bucks and take like a mere matter of minutes. Easy to make your money back I would think

Current state I can't justify the expense against having a series of 3 diamond lapping plates. I sharpen by hand, and I prefer an appleseed edge to a straight bevel. I'd love to see what these can do first hand, but I won't give up my $240 investment for nothing. Thanks for the vid. You wouldn't plug for it if you didn't use it yourself, same as the Starbond CA glue.

The biggest problem I have with the Kadet is the way you set the angle with it. It's just too fiddly and cannot be set precisely like its other siblings. I think they should have implemented a similar swivel system as on their Blitz sharpeners that would have made for favor this one over the other two models but that being said, I really love the miniature size of the Blitz but since the K03 is only marginally more expensive I decided to go all the way up to that model. Will eventually want to sharpen scissors, chisels etc. and so the latter really is the best option for me.

Wow!!! $400.00 plus tax plus ? Shipping?..compared to the Ruivin machine this machine may still have to have updates/ dollar increases. Maybe one should still look around??? For a sharpener that does not break the bank…. Bob

If you get a chance, purchase and review the wasabi knife sharpening system(ruixin pro) Took mine a while to come in but I really really like it. It's ALOT cheaper than this and worth the money and quality is above par for price.

I want the K03 myself... of course, want and get are pretty far apart at the moment. These look and probably feel like they are worth the money. They are more like pieces of art than a knife sharpener, but every test I've seen says they work great.

I have the KME sharpening system and it too is featured in Project Farms video. Unless you are making knives quite often its probably not worth buying the bigger foot print systems like in this video.

I kadid. I have the newest model. I like it but still doesn’t have dual limiters. I was able to creat a fix with a few o rings piled up. I also put a spring on the back limiter with an o ring to keep it in lace. I see on the website you can purchase a separate limiter but currently they are sold out. I was a little bothered at first as the rod and slide piece felt and sounded a little rough. But after two sharpening and a little oil, it’s has quieted down and feels a whole lot smoother. I suppose it’s just a break in thing. Currently it’s $525 for the kit. I feel like the kit, at that price, should come with two limiters and a polishing stone. The 1,000 diamond plate it comes with does leave a nice finish, but not a mirror finish. So for those knives you need or want a mirror finish you must purchase separate stones which TSPROF doesn’t even carry.

I got lucky a few months back, found a blitz 360 with full set of 6 venev orions , 6,8,and 16k shapton k's, 5k and 10k choseras, two strops, and 1.5 and 0.1 micron kme compound for $400, even though I ended up paying a whopping shipping and import fee. I wasn't even looking for the tsprof range, I was pretty happy with my other jigs. After getting it though, damn, I gotta say I love it. But I would not pay for the kadet, maybe the ko3 but their prices are going up whilst their attention to detail and quality in materials appears to be going down. The only thing I don't like about the blitz is there is no variable convex adaption. I haven't bought the simple convex unit yet either but I don't like the idea of just one fairly steep convex, it's probably okay for lower grade steels but when you want to sharpen higher end steels that can take a smaller edge angle ya know it would be nice to have options.

Gotta admit, i still handsharpen my blades, which is mostly the Kitchen knives and occassionally my pocket knife. I often looked at these systems to make my sharpening more consistent but for non commercial use, i think hand sharpening is good enough. Then again, it took me a long time to get to the point where i could do it by hand consistent enough not to make it worse at times.

most accurate is to zero on the ricasso but many knives don't have one or it's not large enough to zero on. many have primary bevels that go all the way to the spin and there's no guaranteed they will clamp perpendicular in the sharpener. in these cases i think taking zero from blade is best option. i've checked this before and it's only off by about 1 to 1.5 degrees.

I just wish my edge pro clamped the blade. I have an older professional model without the magnet. I’ve considered adding a magnet but I really don’t think that would help much. I’ve got too much invested to switch considering I get amazing results with my current set up. I have yet to open the Tormek and I’ve had it in box for a year now 😂. That’s just me !!! It took me 3 years from purchase to wire up my evenheat oven. I just kept using my DIY gas forge for heat treat. Looking back I wish I would have hooked up the oven when I bought it. Oh well, this has been a hobby for me thus far. I’ve made no attempts to sell my knives but I better start before I lose interest. I need to at least cover my expenses for making and sharpening knives.

I have a Blitz 360 and just purchased the K03. My reason was as you concluded, a lot of bang for a small price jump. The only thing about the K03 is a serious lack of portability. A K03 in a smaller size such as the Kadets would have been a home run for me. Outstanding video thanks so much! 😎👍

I have a K03 and love it. Only issue I run into is with narrow knives. The clamps tend to get in the way while grinding and I end up grinding the tips of the clamps down.

one thing I have yet to see a system solve is that different depths of blades throws off any angle measurement that the system uses. It takes a small bit of math to have that filtered out but I haven't yet seen anything that fixes it. As it is now, any measurement of angle is system specific, unless you get a pull through one that has plenty of issues

@almondao
@almondao 2 жыл бұрын
TSProf's web page also sells the double sided stones by Venev so I guess they would work. They don't have the angled edge at the ends of the holder so you may need to increase the tension a little to keep them in place. Also they have an "Improved Stone Holder for Blitz and Kadet" that can be purchased separately. In general sharpening with this system requires very little pressure, so it should hold fine. Most folks exert too much pressure when using these.

Okay I watch a lot of these videos, I consider myself a professional sharpener. I believe that using your hands and high quality stones with water that has the right minerals naturally in it will give a superior finish. It may take me 5-6 hours to really set an edge properly on a knife but I think that my edge retention will outlast any of these exact degree finishes. I use Shapton ceramic on glass for final sharpening... 320/ 750/ 1200/ 2000/ 16000 grit. There are some (not attainable) ceramic rods from other components that I have acquired over the years to help and remove burs from the metal surfaces. I am now about to try and make my own knives, if successful. If not I'll be making paperweights!

@bjrn1326
@bjrn1326 2 жыл бұрын
Why do you think that your sharpening gives better edge retention? Can you specify that? The only thing I can think of, is that hand sharpnening gives a very little convex edge. But even that can you make, with 3 different convex degrees on this system. And like he said in the video, you can get every kind of sharpening stone for this, also shaptons. The stone holder on k03 can hold a normal sized wet stone of you want.
@taylorhickman84
@taylorhickman84 2 жыл бұрын
yeah hand sharpening is in no way superior, especially if it's taking you 5 hours and you are going down to 16000 grit. Sure it looks pretty but lacks the tooth desired for most everyday cutting tasks(see knife nerds edge retention test). On my M390 bladed knives, it takes roughly 20 minutes to put a hair whittling edge on them, for my k390 and lc200n, half an hour tops.

@GreenBeetle

I tried to use a tormek for months before deciding it was junk for knives. It had one of the worst jig setups and that ridiculous card for edge angles. I had two stones for it and the fine one had to be frequently lapped. It was not practical in any way for me. This was years ago and the large system was only $550, I sold it for half that and never looked back.

I think a couple strictly knife makers gave it good reviews. I came into this more as a sharpener turned maker and I think a lot of makers don’t really know what sharp is. I think they are worried about messing up their knives by sharpening. Just my opinion. Not saying they are any less a maker. Well maybe a little bit less. Haha. I’m not near the maker or sharpener to be running my mouth, that’s just my observation. So I better shut up now before someone calls me out. 😂😂😂

My system was $79 on amazon + $50 for the stones I wanted after getting used to it. I uses 6 in stones which I find more controllable than 8 in stones. It does not adjust for varying stone thickness meaning I have to re-angle it for the changes from silicate to diamond to ceramic, but after the first edge is established and assuming some diner hasnt chipped the knife, I only need to make the one change from diamond to ceramic which I am now really fast it and I dont consider a selling point. Two hands to flip is utterly ridiculous. No safety for push forward is ridiculous for a business man with a sharpening gig as I am often looking at the next knife while roughly sharpening the prior one. No means of clamping the base down without using your own C clamp is a big red flag. I expect that company to be sued out of business by 2023.
