I'm super noob on this topic, I purchased a Lansky sharpener kit for my leatherman wingman but their video said to not move the stone back and forth, just move it against the blade. Their sharpener kit looks very very similar to the one in this review I wonder what technique is the correct one.
@CNYKnifeNerd3 жыл бұрын
The same basic way you would freehand sharpen. Move it forward and backward at a 45° angle, or any other angle really. The only great feature of the lansky is that it's pretty hard to mess up.

And we're off! I have linked, and discussed the linking of many many videos below this own video. You can literally follow those links and see the techniques used. There are many different sharpening systems out there, and many many many techniques for individual systems. But you don't have to believe me. Here is the manufacturer using a system similar- notice how they sharpen. tsprof.us/products/tsprof-kadet-expert-1 Again you are also welcome to check out any of the links below the video. The back and forth you seen, regardless of how well I do it, is the way it's intended to be used. Pinning this one.

I got, at far as I know, the first tsprof in the US back in 2014 or 2015. I had to go out of my way to order venev (vid) stones before anyone talked about them. The tsprof came in a green wooden ammo box with Russian writing on it, haha. I sang its praises where I could. Mine is still going strong, stones included. I did get mine for half off which at the time was $150. The guys at tsprof couldn't speak English so everything was done over email using Google translate for all of us. After using it for awhile I got them to send a free unit to Jim Ankerson and then Wranglerstar. They then made a package named after wranglerstar. The new units seem more refined and I'm glad to see them inching more into this market. The original one seems like it's more precise and can handle longer knives but takes up a LOT of room.

Easily the most realistic and honest knife sharpening video I've ever seen. Then throw in some hilarious, witty lines and this gets a gold star, Bro. I've only recently started my self-imposed hellpath into sharpening and let's just say my neighbors are now convinced I have someone trapped in the house and verbally berate them regularly. Hope you also do a video on the Work Sharp because that's the one I recently bought; seems to be a good system but all I can say is starting with shitty kitchen knives with mystery steels to learn on it was dumber than when I told my bosses wife at a cookout that she was hot enough to spread butter on.

I have spent a LOT of time (wasted) getting the perfect mirror edge. I have all the fine grits that are no longer used. I do use a KME type sharpening rig mainly to keep the exact angle on the blade. I have discovered that a small toothy edge cuts much better. My 600 finish grit stone is the best for me. After the last cut, a few strops on leather with green compound to remove the burr and I have a great long lasting cutting edge knife.

Not pulling your rod out all the way can lead to years of financial strain. In another direction, i have become adequately comfortable on a KME. I guess one just has to learn to use what ya got. Anyways, i genuinely appreciate the sarcasm and (un) intended innuendos!!

Not sure if somebody has commented it or not but a handy bit of info about the stone grit. The included stones are rated in the FEPA F grade while things you would commonly see like sandpaper are usually in the FEPA P scale. So you get P40, P120 etc grit. The F1000 stone is about P3000 just to give you a bit of an idea on where they fall. There are many different such scales and Gritomatic has a nice sheet which shows them all and roughly where they fall. Even more info for the curious, the same grit ratings in different stone types can give wildly different finishes. The diamond stones that have diamond fused to the top of a stone usually are the most aggressive and leave more/deeper scratches than a more traditional type of sharpening stone even when the same grit size/rating.

On a serious note... bro... I really love your channel. So relatable. I have a bunch of knives so I can last longer without having to go sharpen them all. I am actually pretty good at sharpening free hand... but I find it super boring. I only do it because I love having a freshly sharpened blade.. just let the blade rest on a thin paper and fall through... yes! Lol. But other times I get so frustrated. Me and d2 for example. Don't get along well. 8cr13mov seems to be the devil. Sharpen it just to have it go dull half way through a cut. Garbage.

Nice, for reference it’s a good idea to wipe the dust off between sharpening and grit changes. I like to use my stones wet, the slurry that you create helps polish the edge, but again, wipe between grit changes. Take care about sharpening the tip, easy to round it off if you go to far and fast. Using lots of pressure will create more work removing deep scratches and the flex can muck up your angle, less is more. I need a beer so that’s enough tips. Cheers

I bought some green compound (unknown grit) and away I went. By my second day, I was consistently achieving shaving sharp mirror polished edges. My point is... Don't knock the learning curve. A light stropping can work great. And "fancy" equipment is not needed.

You are doing pretty solid! Because of pesky geometry, the angle of your system actually changes toward the tip of the blade. depending on the Shape of the "Belly". With the Junglas this might be 1-2° steeper with the TSProf. In practice this just makes the tip sturdier! The Sharpie trick is mainly useful to "Find" your angle, If you have a new knife and want to keep the same edge angle for ease of maintainance, the sharpie trick makes it very easy to allign your stones well! For larger cutting tools like Axes and Chopping knives and Machetes i like using my strop like you would use a File! Bringing the strop to the Tool. For my personal ergonomics this helps me find and keep the angle! Speaking of Worksharp. the Powered sharpeners from them are Excellent for large blades! The basic "MK2" or more advanced "Elite system" are in my experience ideal for large knives and throwaways you don't really care about. They need to be used with extreme care though, otherwise they EAT your steel!

By the way, the F1000 is almost like a 3000 grit water stone. The Fepa system, that’s what the F stand for, as finer grits than the system we use with water stones. I am no Anorak, just happen to be on the lookout for a new sharpening system and trying to understand and compare all those set of stones they are offering. There’s a ball shaped knob on the end of your rod is to prevent you from pulling out all the way. Make sure you adjust your angle.! PS. Great video. I freehand. But I destroyed a lot of knives before I learned how. Useless tip. Disregard as needed. If you run your stones dry rather than wet. You’ll wear them out in 100 to 300 sharpening‘s depending on the quality of your stones. But you’re right. You can see better with dry. But is it worth buying another set in three years versus having the frustration every time of dealing with the wet. To each his own. Try wrapping a bit of electrical tape around the contact points where the clamps meet the blade to protect your finish. And the answer to the question of “how much do I need to drink to do it”. Is “enough”.! Thank you as always for putting your mistakes out there. There’s too much reality in life to always achieve perfection. Also thank you for mentioning blending after doing the spot working. It took me a long time to figure that out. Like a decade if I’m being honest.
