I got one of these earlier this year, and a coworker ordered one too. very happy. Mine was an upgraded package that addressed almost all your concerns. The whole kit fit into a plastic carry case with custom cut foam inside. and it held the abrasives, including strops that fit into the holder and came with the level of kit I got. Great review. Also if you plan to use it for smaller knives, take a look at their other clamps that would make your life easier. Also I use plasti-dip on my clamps instead of taping every knife and it was worked well so far.

@@GreenBeetle it's a liquid plastic coating. Comes in lots of colors. Spray or 'dip'. I use the dip method. It can be easily peeled off and re done if it wears out. Amazon or most hardware stores I've been to have it.

If you really want to do that, I notice a lot of vaguely similar stuff on AliExpress say, much cheaper of course. More to the point some of it is SOLD AS "DIY" stuff, it's just odd pieces of this kind of sharpener. It's a lot of shopping, there are at least fifty versions, proliferating wildly! There are some Chinese systems that use a regular big sharpening stone and move the knife! SO IF you have a pile of (say) Japanese waterstones you might not have to throw them away. Anyway, it looks like there is a lot of stuff being sold exactly for people who want to put something together themselves.

Awesome looking product and I take your word for how good it is. I would pay for the tool if I really had a use for it. I end up losing pocket knives and I don't have any other type. No experience with one, but I've long wanted to try it. From the first time I saw one, just looking at the thoughtful engineering convinced me that it's a better kit and a better bargain than any other high end unit. But first things first--my heart is set on a Work Sharp WS3000, cuz chisels and plane irons in addition to knives and scissors and what-not. Oh, and at half the price of the KO3. And tons of options by way of abrasives, since it's just a 6" flat wheel.

I have used this sharpening system for over 7 years now. It gives the mixes edge of any other I have used. My only beef is that when upgrading, the components from one model to the next is incompatible. You almost have to buy the total tool assembly to upgrade. For a professional blade-smith, it us with the cost, but not for hobbiest knife makers and DIY blade sharpeners.

The right packaging would've been those tool foam trays you can buy and make fit your stuff, and since they make their own boxes, a piece of plywood and locating dowels would've been excellent and long lasting (well, as long as the tool foam lasts, i've seen them installed as far back as 12 years now, and there doesn't seem to be much damage so far).

How does the clamp/s work with knives that got swedges or a lot of facets on the spine? Is there rubber in the clamps (if not that should a quick fix with some vinyl or rubber). I have been wanting a TSProf for a while now, I just can't decide on what model to go with. Been considering the Kadett, but not decided. I want mine to be as easy as possible to set up and use, and take as little space as possible as I mostly will be sharpening folders on the system and some fixed blades. My kitchen knives I usually sharpen on whetstones.

i like seeing the two clamps for the knife.. it seems like it's like many of those mount off the counter top setups. only someone has listened to all of the complaints and hacks and it's finally come out with a solid tool . i love my carbide stones. they had a pretty long break in period on them but keeping them wet and clean. i like them. i just can't justify the price of the wicked edge . maybe if i sharpen knives for a living. $3 a knife i might have it paid off in two years. lots of nice machining on it . but $500 i don't know if that is a bargain or not. i think they can come down to 300-350 and they wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand. informative video i liked it

Most knife sharpeners aren’t designed to clean up long blades like kitchen knives. I remember when this came out and that’s the biggest problem it addressed. The stones are balanced well between size and longevity. Considering what a WE Pro costs and still how unfinished it is, the K03 is a great bargain.

I've always wondered how systems like that maintain the correct bevel angle at the curved portion of the blade. Presumably the stone is free to rotate on the shaft and you have to live with a slight change of angle?

7:11 on your other system, you could try using two rubber strips from a bicycle tube. Note, the rubber should be cleaned for maximum gripping power. If you don't have fear of acetone, wetting the strip in acetone makes it twice grippier than normal. I use it to secure my leather knife, which is basically paper thin, and would slip even in the best of sharpener holders.

Im just curious why have fear of acetone? I dont work in steel, i work in silver, which doesnt react with acetone under normal conditions. Is there something about certain steels that make them not be able to encounter acetone?

@@childofcascadia Har! I think the subject is Solvents v/s People! It's my understanding that Alcohol and Acetone can be metabolized, Acetone is commonly used because it's not as toxic as a dozen handy solvents you could easily name. BUT some people won't want anything to do with any such stuff!

Ha! Ok that makes sense then. I thought it was some kind of steel pickle technique that could only be used on certain steels. Acetones not that bad if you dont douse yourself in it, but I get it. I dont use Sparex #2 for a pickle solution for the reason of not wanting to constantly interact with toxic chemicals. I use industrial grade citric acid. You still dont want it on you, but its way safer, biodegradable, and easy to neutralize.

Thanks for the review. I bought a Worksharp sharpener. Not impressed. I just could not get a "hair popping" edge I get with my wet stones. The unit you are using looks well built but also looks quite expensive. Hmmm, sticking to my wet stones I think. It works for me.

@@nickhadfield3192 I mean by that theory so does grinding post heat treat bevels. Ya do have to take it slow & learn pressure. I will say my grinder goes in reverse, that is the big issue, ya don't want the knife flying into your chest. Have you ever used your grinder? Not being a smart ass, just asking, cause I've sharpened a lot of knives this way. I see a lot of people giving advice without actually doing it. You aren't wrong, but not exactly right either. Just wondering, take it easy.

I have an edge pro and have haven't been all that satisfied with it. It's annoying to use for coarse sharpening or weird blade shapes that you find on pocket knives because you have to manually hold the blade in position. It also doesn't make a ton of sense for honing either when a spyderco triangle sharpmaker or a strop is just faster. So my expensive sharpener just sits and collects dust most of the time.

What I dont like about these things is that, because it uses a single pivot point for the stone, the angle at which your sharpening changes for the entire length of the blade.

Not if the blade is straight. So the curve at the tip, yes it changes a little. Jeremy at Simple little life did a video on this a few years ago. The angle would change except that the length of the hypotenuse increases and decreases as the sharpening arm is moved.

The height of the pivot point stays the same, but when moving to the left or right on a straight line, the grinding surface will be moving farther from the center which would tighten the angle. In order for the grind angle to not change, the blade would need to be curved to match the circumference of a circle thats congruent with the distance from the edge to the center. Doing the math may prove it to be a negligible difference in most cases, but I can imagine it being significant on longer blades.

Taylor Hickman (I picked the following numbers at random. It’s been 7 months since this video and I don’t remember what was presented.) Imagine a 10” kitchen knife. For an ideal 20 degree edge at center, and with the edge 4” from the pivot, the grind arm will have to be placed 1.45” above the blade. With this set up it is 4.26” from the pivot to the blade edge. If we take the same measurements at the heel of the blade, which would be 5 inches tangential to the starting contact point (assuming the blade is perfectly straight), the 4” distance from blade edge to pivot point is now 6.4”. With the height remaining at 1.45”, the angle at which the grinding surface touches the blade is now at 12.77 degrees.

I bought some made strops for this, even though I have regular big strops. I got a bunch of them! Because I KNOW that I'm going to cut up one or two of them by accident! I am wondering if stropping on the EXACT ANGLE of the edge might be more effective, faster, avoid rounding off the edge? It's worth a try! And it's not like there's any shortage of magnifiers and microscopes sitting around! Screw using a marker! The MICROSCOPE shows you the truth!

It is glittering and metallic! It's more machined than it has to be! Stuff is "machined all over" and anodized, it's a presentation grade thing. I'm thinking of setting up at the Flea Market and just sharpen knives for the passers-by!

These types of systems are really very good for people who might not necessarily be great at sharpening or have high alloy, modern powder metallurgy stainless knives which are just a massive pain in the bum to sharpen. They do the job very well for those along with some more aggressive re-profiling of any old, worn out stuff. If you're a knife maker who does a lot of different metals or is looking for a baseline in performance in their geometry, its got the precision to at least get you started somewhere with a consistent edge bevel. Set your angle, test away on cardboard or rope or whacking it into logs, see how it works on other angles to what works.

I don't see the point of calibrating the arm against the base at 2:45. The arm doesn't have to be level relative to the table. Even if they're not level against each other, the sharpening angle would not be affected.

Nobody who reviews these seems to use the full length of the stone when sharpening. Definitely try to get into the habit of doing that from the start, or you'll be spending more on stones than you need to.

They're in the catalog but out-o-stock right now I think. It's sort of "Y" shaped, so the thing engages both sides of the rotating mechanism but comes out as a single clamp that turns on the axis of rotation. They have one that's thin, and might allow for the Scandinavian grind? I'll get one when it's available just because it exists I guess.

The thing I don't like about this design is that the angle changes the further away from the pivot point you're contacting the blade...so the more you swivel from center, the more you're getting away from your true angle. That shows especially well on that long flat bar you showed about 8 1/2 minutes in. Seems like a lot of fancy setup for something that could be accomplished (potentially better) with a simple stone or two.

It’s the same angle no matter how far from pivot because length of the arm changes to accommodate. Jeremy at simple little life did a video on this a while ago. I think the angle changes at the tip a bit going around the belly, though.

@@GreenBeetle Unless the actual height of the pivot changes, that's just not true. Pythagoras theorem. The height is a set value, so as you lengthen the distance from the upright, the other side gets longer too...and the angle changes. It might be minor, but it's there. Edit: I get what you're saying, but it only holds true while the edge stays straight. And at that end where the arm lengthens is where your blade usually curves.

I received mine on 08/30/22 and can't say it was so smooth of an assembly. The box had been dropped on the corner and the wooden crate was busted. The logistics company that TSPROF.US used to fulfill the order put the tsprof box inside of a larger box with virtually no packing and when I received it from UPS the shipping tape was busted on both ends . Long story short the mechanical angle gauge was bent pretty bad which I blame on the shipper but the fact that the thumb screws that hold the unit to the weighted base would only thread in by hand about one third of the way and had to be tightened the rest of the way with pliers leaves me to wonder just what kind of quality control issues the company has. I am not happy with my purchase.

I do not recommend buying this sharpener, I have ko3 pro hunter and kadet pro, although kadet pro has few less options, it is far more stable sharpener than k03 hunter. Ko3 Hunter main top swivel which holds the rod - always unscrews and as youre sharpening it always pop back and forth, you gotta always tighten the screw on it, if you tighen to tight swivel rotations will be rough and and create more resistance for turning as youre sharpening. Another flaw that is becoming very annoying is the bar that holds the miller clamps. No matter how much you tighten it, as you press against either left or right end of the knife while sharpening- it caused tiny dip on the edge of it even with light pressure, kadet pro doesn't have such issues, its clamps tightening has different mechanism but much more efficient and sturdy, im not happy with ko3 hunter sharpener, kadet pro is a better choice, even though it has few limits

It’s more for the person that sells products on a regular basis, speeds the sharpening time while keeping a perfectly average edge. Allowing for more productivity, hobbyists are always better sticking to the basics I personally think it’s more fun anyways

Almost as good as the cement on my backstep! (just kidding). A very impressive review; nice and short. My pop could get his butcher knives sharper than any gadget I know, including the Wicked Edge, but for mugs like me the TSProf would be fantastic. I still, at 70, just use stones as I don't have the dough for one of these fixed angle systems. I get my knives pretty sharp for my needs but not razor sharp. I'd like to retain my fingers for as long as I can; slipped once cutting a potato and "holy moly" blood everywhere (and I didn't even feel it!) No more Rachmaninoff Number Four for me!!!

They sent me an affiliate code to use if I liked it. It’s in the description. It beats my more expensive wicked edge hands down so I already sold the wicked edge. My honest opinion is it’s the best sharpener I’ve ever owned. If I were more constant on stones I’d probably stick to those but I’m not.
