5 Of The Fastest Birds In The World

This planet is home to many creatures that are built for speed but one group of animals is a lot faster than the rest. Birds are famously the fastest animals on this planet and no other animals come close. Birds come in many different shapes and sizes and each species has different adaptations that help them to survive. In this video i will be focusing on the expert flyers as i will be going through 5 of the fastest birds in the world.

An honorary mention would be the Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus). They are up there with the Saker in speed and Prairie Falcons often fly low and fast then suddenly swoop upward very fast and they can turn on a dime. It most closely resembles the Saker Falcon.

Very cool video. A cool idea could be to do a sequel for the fastest birds, but exclude flight speed. Using things like running and swimming speed. If that makes sense

I'd like to see a list like this, but for sustained, horizontal flight, rather than the stoop/dive speed of predators. Perhaps a 'fastest species' of different major bird orders/families would be a little bit unusual eg fastest galliforme, anseriforme, psittacine, columbiforme, ratite etc.

I used to live in an appartment that had a huge Swift nesting place under the roof and since my balcony was on the top floor they would come swooping in just a few centimeters over your head to enter the nexting area. Also really cool when they where prepearing to leave for the winter, you could hear them rushing about before they would launch in a massive swarm, was really cool if you managed to time them leaving with you sitting on the balcony.

A lot of those figures are for dives as opposed to level flight. Weird exception is the Golden Eagle as they have one of the fastest level flight speeds of any bird as well as being the second fastest in a dive.

great video, to add another bird would be the rock dove (aka rock pigeon), they've been known to out speed cars on highways and out maneuver and even out speed peregrine falcons (in a straight line pigeons are faster than peregrine falcons but the falcons are still their top predator). they've been documented flying for hours on end for super long distances. pigeons are underrated when it comes to speed you'd be surprised how fast they are especially racing pigeons.

I think a video on fastest birds in sustained, horizontal flight would likely include pigeons. I suspect that other than the swift, none of the birds from this video would make the top 10.

When it comes to actual flight, pigeons are faster than falcons. Falcons are only able to catch pigeons using the surprise of a dive.

I would like for you to comment on whether each speed rating is for dives or level flight. I also suggest that you mention the one physical characteristic necessary for birds to attain high speed flight. Their nose. At high speed, air comes rushing into a bird's nose at high enough speed and high enough pressure to burst a bird's lungs. Really fast birds have a baffle in their noses to slow incoming air.

Like it could have some animals that it's the only member of it's family to live in Freshwater like that the Burbot is the only freshwater member of the Cod family. Same with the Freshwater Drum being the only drum (the fish not the instrument) that spends it's whole life in freshwater, the Freshwater Blennies, and others.

If this were a "Fastest Animals" list instead, there is a possibility that the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat would compete with these birds. While no maximum speed is written down, they are said to fly over 160 km/h.

The Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo) is the main predator of Swifts, and there is video showing them catching Swifts. It looks like a small Peregrine, but in terms of aerobatic ability, they are without parallel, and make Peregrines look lumbering. I don't know what their dive speed is, but it's very fast. I don't think the speeds I've seen of 100mph in a dive, are anything like what they are actually capable of. But then they don't often do steep dives, so I suspect their maximum dive speeds have never been measured. Merlin tend to fly very fast in low level horizontal flight.

Not sure about eagle since I personally never heard/read about them being anywhere near top speed lists unlike falcons and swifts but when it comes to falcons specifically, that high recorded speed is not really their actual flight speed but the speed they reach when sky diving. They even have a specific adaptations in their skulls cause they tend to crash down into their prey while diving to withstand those impacts at such speeds. None falcon is capable of flying anywhere close that speed when it comes to horizontal movement.

You mentioned some of the falcons breeding to create hybrids. Not sure if you know but, ALL falcons can inter-breed. In fact, an American Kestrel can be crossed with a Gyrfalcon!

⁠​⁠@@awesomeocelot7475a average human air diver weights about 70kg and stoops at a speed at 120 and falcon around 1.5kg stoop at 230 over taking the human diver cause it’s adaptions to being able to cut thought the air, it’s at a much lighter weight that would shatter most animals at that speed . only man’s machine can top that and we need protection and a jet engine. if you threw a other bird like a chicken off a plane it would not travel at the same speed as a falcon cause it’s not got the adaptions and reinforcement to withstand speed and it not aerodynamically built .

It's a controlled dive in-flight. When whales dive, we don't say they're not 'swimming'. In the same way, a bird's dive is part of flight. I personally think sustained horizontal flight speed is the more interesting statistic, but to say a controlled dive isn't 'flying' does not provide for a consistent definition.

IMO all the falcon species should be disqualified from the list. They aren't flying, they're diving - ie, falling. Anything taken to a height and dropped will fall pretty fast due to gravity. These lists should be limited to birds like the swift that actually FLY at those high speeds.
