Hard to believe that a skinny little fart from Brooklyn, Nova Scotia had such a booming, big distinctive voice. His big success was in the U.S. but he still toured small towns in Ontario in the twilight of his career. Some country music is a reflection of pain and suffering. Hank Snow had plenty growing up as a kid.

Amen, I was thinking the same thing. Hank wasn't much to look at, but such a beautiful singer that made you love him to the bone. He was the favorite singer for the men and women of the Korean War. Nothing said Home to them like Hank Snow.

a great song! I remember it from my mom singing it in the early 50s. She grew up in the 20s and 30s when the original version was quite popular. Although credit is given to Robert Massey, who apparently heard in a Georgia jail, and given to his brother, who helped copy write it with Vernon Dalhart, records show it was probably pinned by Robert Taylor on the wall of that jail cell. Dalhart's recording was probably the first known recording that sold on the market. I guess the real talent never got any royalties or credit for this immemorial song. What a shame. This also happened to a number of great Black writers/singers of the early rock and roll days. Seems to be a uniquely American trait.....making a fortune off of the least of us.

Feel really sorry for poor old Hank! He was the star attraction at the Louisianna hayride when elvis was on in the first half of the programme! He was such a sensation he completely overshadowed the veteran country singer! ( maybe thats why got that toupee! to try and outmatch Elivis's hairstyle! Pete 'Kiwi' Keegan
@hanksnow29 жыл бұрын
Peter Beschorner Yes Elvis certainly had the attraction for the youngsters of the day, no doubt about that! But don't forget, it was Hank (& those like him) who laid down the "Trail", for this to happen. You probably know that it was Hank who took Elvis along, very early in Elvis's beginnings. Hank's son Jimmy & Elvis were close, & Elvis used to hang at Hank's house. Give the 2 just a guitar only, & Hank would leave Elvis in his dust! ...& BTW, I'm 74 & I like Elvis very much as well.
