The Hawaiian Islands are vulnerable to tsunamis generated by great earthquakes occurring in the subduction zones of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Local tsunamis have also hit Hawai‘i, the last one was the 1975 Kalapana earthquake that killed 2 persons at Halape, Hawai‘i island. More than 160 tsunamis have been observed with more than 80 observed on Maui.
