Whenever a theist confronts my disbelief stance, I like to ask them to contemplate a single question and then a follow up statement. Q- Why do you not believe in Thor, the god of thunder, or any other gods? S- Once you analyze that reason, you will find out why I arrived at my conclusions regarding belief in gods. Good podcast, Seth.

26:30 "I thought something would happen to my family" - Yeah.. Not trying to sound nasty here, but the fact that the caller here says she was worried that the god would strike down her family as a punishment for her turning away from him? That there? That's a really messed up thing for a religion to plant in someone's head. Consider how petty and cruel the biblical god is, it's well within character for him to do something like that too. There's a word that describes these kinds of passive or low level, even subliminal teachings and thoughts. Insidious. So glad these two managed to get out.

Agreed. Parent's who abandon their children over such things, do not deserve their love. Parents need to support their children, irregardless of beliefs, religion or sexual orientation. I'm a bisexual and yet to come out to my parents and I made a promise to myself. If they cut me off, I'm cutting them out of my life and maybe sometime down the road they'll realise what they did and we can start over. Because at the end of the day, they're family and you don't abandon family no matter what.

It's interesting to listen to this topic. I was always an atheist. My father is an atheist and my mom a christian, not the kind of christian that interprets the bible literally. I was born in Armenia where over 95% percent of the population is christian. But i always lied when I was asked, because I didn't want any problems with friends. Most of the people don't read the bible nor go to church. They just think "My parents told me there is God, so I believe it."

Great Show Seth. I enjoy the format you use to bring the truth. This topic relates to me when I lived at home. It was difficult to go to church when i didn't believe. I am dating a believer. When we met I told her upfront that I was an atheist and she was ok with it. Weve been together now for 18 months. She believes what she believes and I don't believe what I don't believe. We have decided that if we have kids that they will be raised outside of church, and we will teach them about the god hypothesis from many different faith perspectives. She understands that we are not born with a belief. Point being is that we have a great relationship regardless.

Seth, I think a second podcast is a great idea. Becoming more well versed in what actually defines you as a person, who has the ability to spearhead and represent so many other points of view or methodologies; to at least get people conversing and developing a more coherent world-view(s) than is often expressed - is a good thing. I think the real key with developing another show is to get a long list of showrunners who would co-develop various 'casts' and contribute to 'casts'.

It was that fear of seeing a close friend burning in hell that lead me to atheism at a very young age of 6. By 10, I had completed my deconversion. A priest, during Mass, told us non-Catholics were destined for hell. My best friend was not Catholic. This freaked me out. I ran over to his house afterwards and pleaded with him to become Catholic. His mom said the priest was wrong. PRIESTS LIE?!? That got me started on my escape from religious jail. That was over 47 yrs ago. Vivid memory for me.

I was told the same thing by nuns during class. I couldn't believe it was true and worried about my friends who weren't Catholic. Religion is poison.

I think Nietzsche was onto something when he described the initial stages of atheism as if 'looking into an abyss'. This is the way people perceive their entire life and the postictal period that comes with that petrifying question: what DO I believe? This vacuum of 'belief' often leaves us stupefied which seems to stretch on forever. However, once this passes you begin to really 'think' for the quite possibly the first time in your life and the water is suddenly so clear.

I am non religious. Should i ever have children i would expose them to the many cultures and beliefs, not trying to indoctrinate them to any particular thing. And let them freely chose what they find suites them best.Being de-converted, I wish i had that freedom to have explored all sorts of philosophical, and religious systems I do now when i was younger. but hey better late then never. I am a person who is passionate about the discussions of what could be possible. My mom is a strong believer, while not exactly a fundamentalist, she and i while butting heads occasionally we still love and care for each other and try to support another spite our difference of opinions. We also do our best to respect each other. while I am not as Vocal as some non religious free thinkers, I do get all fired up when the topic comes up.

They are BRAINWASHED and that is the nicest thing I can say about it. Religion really hurts people.

Hi Seth, I have to admit, I have no idea what pod-casting is like. I only listen to "pod-casts" on KZbin. But if the infrastructure is so horrendous then maybe you should start a Kickstarter and build a new one. I mean you seem to know what you, and presumably others, need. You have a large fan base and connections to other groups that I'm sure could help you both spread the word AND help you create it. You could make is in such a way that other groups, even unrelated ones, could use it also.

As a youtube browser looking in upon a podcast, video gets the users reaction, especially when it is posted on youtube. I have a hard time listening to this especially when trying to direct my intention on nothing but audio being an avid web browser, you can get your attention lost much more easily in other sites rather than listening to audio, much like an add in the background of a website that a novice user doesn't know how to turn off, but a video...well my eyes are my main focus for the web

You didn't pick her. And in the end, if it helps, you know you didn't do anything to hurt her. It was her choice to act the way she did. Your hands are clean as far as I can see. So enjoy your new family, the one you did choose. You're free to forget, if you wish.

In a way I am happy that I was brought up as a child in the church. I gain perspective from it. I always knew the churchy crap was crap, but still believed in Jesus and Yahweh. Over time of course this changed, but when I do discuss these things or think about these things that are religion, I can understand where the other person is coming from on a rather deep level. I am in no way advocating raising children with bible school, but I am glad I went.

Alunya, the reason people care what others believe is that beliefs inform actions. If your beliefs were only your own and never affected any other person, no one would even care. That is not the case with our society and world. If others make you feel bad about some aspect of your beliefs, wouldn't you agree that it's just as important to look in the mirror as it is to look at those who make you feel bad? I don't hate Christians, I hate Christianity and what it makes good people do. You DO care.

I don't see anybody here presuming that believers in gods don't think. I'm willing to defend the position that there are definitions of god that we can know do NOT exist. (For example, gods which are omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent simultaneously.) Know refers to knowledge and knowledge is a subset of belief which can be demonstrated to be so. If you can't show it, you don't know it. I reject the notion that you know god personally or that your heart is where he abides.

Yep, that's been my point in life. If 'GOD' is so powerful, and all knowing, and such as the religious put it. Jesus said a lot of controversial statements to truly test peoples hearts and their faith, such as "unless to drink my blood and eat my flesh, you have no life in you" John6:53. On the outside this is grotesque but He was refer to a deeper truth of the importance of His atonement He made for us. We remember this with communion, the bread and the wine SYMBOLIZE His atonement, His shed life for us so we may live. He tested people because He want those that trust Him and do not look back.

You are correct. It doesn't always work, at that moment, but you have planted the seed of possible cognitive exercise. The theist might go off and maybe think about it more and realize how dissonant they are. Many theists compartmentalize their beliefs in a little 'box' within their brains, not allowing them to question, out of fear instilled by dogmatic threats of damnation, hellfire, etc.
