TTArtisan 100mm f/2.8 Bubble Bokeh Lens (More than a Gimmick?) | Round Glass Review

The TT Artisan 100mm f/2.8 Bubble Bokeh lens, out of the box, is largely a one-trick pony. What it does is create a specific type of background look with soft-ish portraits that don’t actually meet the aesthetic of soft-focus lenses. It can also be used to create that specific background look with other subjects, but portraits are where this lens is really intended to be used. But here’s the thing about a one-trick pony: it’s important to teach it new tricks. Here are some that I think could work well:
1- Use a black background in a dark room and hang fairy lights behind a portrait subject. Then shoot at different apertures and see how the stars versus bubbles look.
2- Grab a tilt-shift adapter and go to town on combining movements with this lens’ image character.
3- Use a macro adapter or speedbooster adapter to alter the focus point or nature of your images and you may be quite pleased by the results.
Triplet lenses are one of the oldest optical formulae and they led to many fascinating lenses over the years - the Speedic, the Ernostar, and the Sonnar all have DNA that goes back to the triplet design. Using a lens like this is using a lens that has deep roots in the tradition of photography. That, for me, is a fantastic aspect of this lens because it helps revive the look and feel of images that the photographers of the early 1900s would have created. Embrace that from this lens and work creatively within both its limitations and capabilities and it can be a tool to create unique and captivating images.
