Timo Boll gave him a very short, low, and relatively non-spinny lob because of how much pressure he was under. These things all combine to make a lob easier to attack. A long, high, and top-spinny lob, like the ones usually done by Michael Maze, is much harder to kill because it forces the attacker away from the table and reduces the available angles of attack.
