As an American teenager I had the Honda SP1 on my wall. Epic rider. Hate I never saw him race in person. Managed to meet his wife, daughter and see his nephews race in person. Fantastic country with a passionate people for road racing.

Someone might beat his TT record some day, but there will never be another Joey Dunlop. The man was so humble. He didn't want to be a superstar. He just loved racing motorcycles.

Still makes me laugh that Joey told Honda Britain to stick the Fireblade they wanted him to race that year to ride his VTR. And just how quickly Honda got him all the best bits for said bike to the island (and some HRC mechanics iirc or is that just my age?)...bloody legend!!!

Remember seeing the start of the race from the creg,then leaving to fly back home.i heard in the airport terminal, that DJs bike had given up the ghost, and Joey had won!one of the greatest TT victories ever!

Man oh man. Great video !!!!! High on my Bucket list.... to visit the Isle at Race time. My Brother who passed away a couple of weeks ago, said he has a friend who's family has a place on the Isle. I'd mentioned that we should go someday.... We can't now... but maybe someday I can. RIP Robert C. Lyons and Joey and Michael Dunlop....

Joey Dunlop must have the most recognizable ARAI sponsored lid ever produced. Keen riders can notice it a mile away. Always wore ARAI, and still do. Honda was 100% always was about the Man Time Trials since day-1, the RC-51 was the hottest thing in 2000. A great time to be a motorcycle rider/racer. R.I.P Joey Dunlop (and family)…

Great race. My dad said this was even better than when Mike Hailwood made his return to the TT in 1978, winning the F1 TT on a Ducati, and the Senior TT the following year on a Suzuki.

I was lucky enough to be spectating at that race as a 30yr old , and even luckier to once have been offered some of Joey's onions and curry sauce with chips in his Mother's house when I was 11 or 12 , and had been invited by a friend, whose Dad was a racer, to go see the NW200 .

Two different sports. Hickman is basically a short circuit racer and he is totally dominating road racing. Someone summed it up saying:- a road racer couldn’t turn up at Moto GP and win but a GP racer couldn’t turn up and win at the TT. ( I only watch road racing, so I more for the road racers)

It’s hard to compare… these days there is a lot of “professionalism” in both types of racing. Road racing does take a proper special kind of rider though!
