Good points all around. I too have fought the "getting my money's worth" with the most advanced version of games vs. the complexity -- and less fun -- that it can add. As a former longtime Strat player, I have found a happy medium with Season Ticket Baseball. It has plenty of baseball realism without sending you down a rabbit hole to get there, as one dice roll usually resolves plays without having to keep extra things in mind. To steal a phrase, it feels like baseball and has just enough variety to keep you coming back. As I'm sure you know, you can print off the rules and game charts along with sample teams, as long as you are comfortable with printing PDF cards. But I've found Season Ticket has the easiest cards to print on a home printer. I've already completed a very realistic 1975 Red Sox replay and am in the middle of a 1972 Cubs replay. Maybe it won't be your game, but it might be worth a try.

Appreciate the suggestion. I have a few sets printed out for Season Ticket and agree that it's a great game. I also agree that it is the easiest to print PDF's for as well. Especially if you get the perforated card stock from Amazon that Clay recommends. :-)

Replay Gamer. Playing any game how you feel like playing it, is what keeps you healthy, wealth and wise. If a playing a game makes it feel like a job, then you should not play it. I myself want as many mathematical computations as I can do in a game. It keeps my brain sharp or at least I hope it is doing that. TTT #100 coming closer and closer. Thanks for doing TTT 96.

I would say that a lot of us would say that part of the reason we play these games is to help keep our brains active and sharp. :-)

Great video. So true trying to find the balance in time, complexity and effort for the brain! You reminded me about the Deflections and now I will try that. I like the Enforcer rule also. I also use a dice roll chart based on star ratings to determine to Shoot, to Penetrate or to Pass. Strat is cool in that you can add and modify fairly easily.

Yeah, there are optional rules within the games and then there are home brewed rules for us to consider. :-)

Yeah, that balance between what "feels" like it makes a difference is different for most of us, I think. :-)

That's why I enjoy Hockey Bones. Pretty much one chart so once you get the hang of it the game flows well. I do agree that the more we play a game the more critical we become of said game and we start looking for new ways to make it more enjoyable. I've gotten that way with Franchise Hockey Manager. I've gotten bored with just simming through seasons and the process of resigning and signing players. So I've started doing as many aspects of the game as possible (setting all player lines, tactics for each line, etc.)

Interesting chat Gamer. Many excellent points. Bottom line is you have to enjoy what you are playing and whatever gets you there is the answer. I did have to chuckle when you were talking about Strat Hockey. I play APBA since watching Dave Gardner describe things he did to make the game workable. I find even with all the options, the game being pretty reasonable to play, with the modifications Dave suggested. I hear people talk about the difficulty of APBA, yet as you were talking about Strat, I thought you were talking nuclear physics at times. As you said, everybody sees things differently. I know nothing about Strat so what I’m suggesting may not apply. With APBA, Mike Burger made an easier way of dealing with penalties. I don’t know if Strat has a similar type of chart somewhere or if Burgers chart can adjusted to work with Strat, but if it can life is easier as a hockey gamer. Thanks for the video Gamer. I recently played a Super Advanced game with a guy who is intimately familiar with that version of the game. That game was the 94/95 Blues vs. 94/95 Red Wings and will go up on my channel tomorrow (1/4). Having played that with him I think I would still prefer the Basic version which is fun but doesn't lose a lot by not going that extra mile on play actions.

Great video. I think your struggles with incorporating sadv as much as possible without killing the game is common. I like strat hockey and play very similar to you, with adv action cards. Also prefer adv penalties. I did sadv pps for a while but it just slows down the cd game for me too much. (Even sadv is limited with five on three pps.). Also line changes can be a reason I play it less. Strat hockey is still fun but I stick mostly with baseball which I feel strat worked out many more of the kinks than hockey regarding playability. I know there are die hard strat hockey guys though. Good luck with your tinkering.

Thanks! I believe most people feel like Strat puts more focus and energy on their baseball game than they do their other sports, like hockey. But I am enjoying the hockey VERY much. :-)

Hi RG. I'm like that with strat super advanced baseball. I use the basic fielding chart because I feel like the advanced chart gives too many errors and the SADV chart is just a bit too cumbersome.
