The most important thing to remember is that they can happen to anyone, anywhere, and any lifestyle. Be safe and always aware of surroundings and people's energy. Trust your gut instincts. It feels different than paranoia. You'll know the difference

An aeroplane could fail in mid-air and crash into your house. A solar flare could blast our planet into an irradiated wasteland at any given moment. Any semblance of security or safety you have at any moment is an illusion, so there's no reason not to go out there and live life. Obviously, be smart about it like you said, but fear is the mind-killer.

a few years ago i traveled throught italy and croatia by bicycle. there was this strange morning: i got up and immediately started packing my stuff. first i thaught i will take it easy at the beautiful beach close to venice. but something in me told me to leave very soon. just as i finished up packing, i sat down at my fireplace and 2 middleaged men walked by about 50m away. they where acting very strange. talked to each other in the middle of nowhere, turned around several times, one peed somewhere. the other one startet smoking while stand around randomly. they where around for 2 minutes or so. i was the only one around. the moment i realised they are not leaving, i got on my bike and drove away the other way. i was so glad i listen to my gut feeling this morning. i was so shure they where planning to loot me…

Bro! What a day! A couple things you should really look into is 1) install a kill switch into the vehicle.. so if someone does try to steal the vehicle it won't start or move. They won't wanna try to repair while trying to steal.. 2) look into getting some flood lights put on top of the van near your door. Flip the switch and scare them away.. (at night)

Bro, commend you for being badass adventurer and free spirit. I would urge you to adopt all of the legal means of self defense that are approved in all states. You will likely never have to resort to these measures, but if you are isolated and they are not available, you then find yourself in a bad situation. Love the channel and hope you stay safe and have a blast out there!

I hope you don't mind me responding to your post? I worked in the security service for around 30 years and I can say with a wealth of experience and perfect clarity that weapons are only ever bad. I've been stabbed 3 times and on each occasion the person with the blade came a very poor second and on each occasion I was the one standing in court facing the prospect of a custodial sentence whilst the perpetrator got off scot free, why? Because as a professional I should have shown restraint? Really, I would challenge anyone to "show restraint" after they've just been stabbed. If you decide to use a weapon yourself you have be prepared for the consequences because there will be, either from the law or some sort of payback from the other person or their family. It's also worth remembering that if a weapon is used there's a real possibility of killing someone albeit unintentionally. The best defence you can ever have is to make sure that you never put yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself.

I'm a part-time van dweller who built out a Promaster in 2018. I had been camping in it for several years at all sorts of places (BLM land, National Forests, deserts) with no problem. Then, a series of events happened. I was camping with my son in a perfectly good grassy spot. I was just off a dirt road. There was a slight depression off the road, so I backed in (the Promaster has front-wheel drive) and parked close to the road instead of further back. I didn't give it a second thought. For some strange reason, I had looked up the tow points (the front one is hidden on the Promaster) before the trip. I had never bothered to do so on previous trips. I felt reasonably secure as I had rescue stuff in my "garage," including rescue boards, a tow strap, a shovel, etc. At camp, I tried to open my back doors to get some firewood, and I heard a pop. Apparently, the cable to the doors either broke or slipped off. I couldn't get at anything (including my rescue stuff) from the back. I thought, "I'll take care of it when I get home," and put it behind me. I wanted my son to have a good time. As we slept, I heard a massive thunderstorm and woke to everything soaked with water. I was glad I had backed in and was close to the road, but when I tried to pull out, it was clear that I was stuck and couldn't use any of my rescue stuff due to the back door issue. I panicked but didn't want to frighten my son, so I looked cool on the surface. I knew I needed a tow truck, but cell service was very poor, and there was no way I could open web pages to search for one. I remembered seeing a house down the road, so I walked to it. Thank God the owner was home. I told him my problem and asked if he knew of a towing service. He said he had a pickup and a strap, and we drove back to my camp. This guardian angel pulled me out (it was harder than you would think) with a strap that was not rated for a vehicle as big as my van, but it worked. He wouldn't accept any money and went on his way. There are nice people everywhere if you give them a chance. By the way, I couldn't fix the back door when I got home and had to take it to my local Dodge dealership. They replaced the cable and. it cost me over $800! That was a less-than-nice experience.

I've dealt with people trying to get into my place drunk, wrestle me to get into my front door, accusing me of following them, even kicking at me, etc. Mental health issues/and or drugs are epidemic now - by design, unfortunately - and people in seriously altered mental states can change their attitudes at the drop of a hat. Ergo you have to err on the side of caution, be polite and firm with them (not instigating but also letting them know you're not going to accommodate them), while disengaging.

But we took our mini cooper down like complete idiots. To be fair, many an idiot had gone down before us which fooled us into thinking it was safe. It was not at all. Got it stuck in almost the same scenario you described, got help from a super friendly Chad, flew across the sand and got stuck again right at the end. He helped us out again like the hero he was and it was all good. Crazy spot. We have a Jeep now. This story reminds me of relatives who travelled from Germany to Spain twice a year. On one trip, they were driving their RV and parked somewhere in France for the night. After they were sleeping, thieves managed to set off some type of gas into the RV that put them out. The thieves then broke in and robbed them blind, while they were incapacitated. When they came to, they contacted authorities, and were told that there had been a rash of incidents like theirs reported. I have no idea what the substance the thieves used was nor how they managed to get it inside the RV, but it’s terrifying. Found this on net: In July British couple Debbie Keeney and Bob John were gassed and robbed while sleeping in their campervan near Marseille, British newspaper The Mirror reported. They lost several hundreds of pounds worth of jewellery and cash. Police suspect gangs from Eastern Europe are preying on holidaymakers in the same way.

You told that story like a storyteller. 👏 Entertaining and a few lessons to be learned. I used to travel in my car when I was young, sleeping in the back seat, right in the woods, or on the beach, or even just off the side of the highway. Never had any frightening or dangerous situations happen. However, although I live in a pretty quiet, small village with an almost non-existant crime rate, my home has been broken into, a portion of my yard taken over by a nasty neighbor who proceded to set my trees on fire (the criminal trial is in 9 weeks,) and a vehicle vandalized in my own driveway in the last 15 years! I suppose what I'm getting at is don't let your guard down, wherever you are- Keep your head on a swivel and always try to anticipate what *could* happen. Always have a quick and easy escape route. And always have *"protection,"* because you just never know.

Dude that would’ve stressed me OUT! 😅 that’s insane, but glad y’all were okay. Reminds me of the only time I’ve had a sketchy encounter camping - maybe someone will enjoy this story. Two friends and I went backcountry desert camping in Big Bend National Park in December 2013. We set up our tent, the sun goes down, we’re inside talking. We hear “hello? Hellooo?” from the darkness outside the tent. We realize we’re not just hearing things. There’s actually a man outside our tent. We unzip to see a man standing there with a LANTERN. Three of us, one of him, what could go wrong. He says something along the lines of “I’m camping nearby, thought I’d introduce myself because you’re the first people I’ve seen in a week” His next words shook us. “Oh and I just have one question for you…” he says, “What do you think happens when you die?” 😵‍💫 My heart sank. We didn’t even have time to process that question (thankfully) because he immediately started in on religion and how God told him to go to the desert, convert people etc. etc. He said he needed to convert us and he’d be a failure if he didn’t. 😬 We literally tried to tell him, “it’s okay dude, we’re alright, you don’t need to convert us” 😅 Eventually he gave up and said goodnight and went back to his campsite. We were like WTF just happened. We woke up the next day and he drove by our site again to thank us. He said by being unable to convert us that he knew he wasn’t ready (for what, we don’t know) and would drive himself back home to Minnesota. So yeah. The end. Crazy shit happens in the desert 😂

Your video is the second one I have watched this week where someone approached a van camping in the desert. There is no way I would ever do that alone. Our lives are at stake today, no matter where we are, with all the drugs and shootings, etc. going on. Back many years ago when my son was in 6th and 7th grade, we used to go to the nearby state park to camp in the summer. Then I never had a fear of people, I had a fear of wild animals and snakes. We camped in a tent and we loved that and all was well, but those were different times. Lights out in the park went out at 10 and it was pitch black. We had to walk quite a distance to the bathhouses so had flashlights with us always. The worst thing we had happen was hearing someone walking around the tent and suddenly showing a flashlight into it and saying, "This is the park guard and you need to be quiet and turn off your lights soon." We were laughing about something and we were in the middle of mountains, so everything echoed. When he left, we sat and looked at each other and started to laugh, but muffled out laughs. Be safe and don't laugh after 10PM. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You said it, the times are very different and have actually become dangerous ! I may be forced into van life due to economic demands but I think I would be fine with the downsized lifestyle, I’m just worried about the danger of it ! Being an older female I’m glad to have my Doberman “Layla” to be with me ! I’ve grown up in NYC so I’ve always been aware of my surroundings ! There’s a lot of EVILout there !

My story: I was travelling through Ireland in my van. During the night I would always wrap myself in a thick thermal blanket. One night I wrapped myself like a rug without folding the bottom under my feet so they can't slide out during night. So during sleep my feet slid out and my toes touched the freezing cold metal of the vans back door and stayed like that until I woke up in the morning. When I woke up first thing I noticed was that I can't feel my feet nor my toes, I looked at them and the feet were light blue and toes dark blue. I couldn't move them or step on them, so I got a panic attack and called the ambulance. They came over and took me to the ER, and after their doctors checked it out they scheduled me for an immediate surgery where they ended up amputating both my big and two adjacent small toes, but saving the feet, although nerves in feet were also gone so no sensation in feet anymore. I still can't get over the fact that such a stupid little mistake did this to me. Thankfully I can still walk and am not crippled too much, but god damn

A tale well told! I once had a creepy experience that I thought might put me off solo/wild travelling for life. A few years ago whilst I was motorbiking around the UK / Europe as a 28 year-old female on my own, I'd set up a sweet camp on a secret rocky outcrop jutting into the sea, hidden from anyone's sight, where I'd rigged my hammock and tarp up and had a campfire and such set up on the rocks. I left my camp unattended each day to attend a course on marine navigation in a nearby fishing town. One day I got back to my camp and immediately saw someone had rifled through my stuff, and then I saw that they'd used my permanent marker and written in huge crazed letters "I'M WATCHING YOU" on a big piece of cardboard I was using for firelighting. F*** me that made my heart jump into my mouth! I was torn between (a) immediately packing up and leaving, in case there was an actual psycho out there in the darkness, and (b) facing my fears and staying put - and I chose to do the latter because I reasoned that travelling was my lifestyle, and if I ran away, I would take this fear with me wherever I went. Nothing happened to me, I lit a fire, remained watchful, and eventually even managed a fitful few hours sleep in my hammock. I think it must have just been some pesky kids who had played that awful trick on me!

My lifestyle is polar opposite, yet it seems to balance out in the middle. I live with my pets, with nature inside my home, in one of many small neighborhoods that is quiet. When you walk up towards the cemetery (yes, I live half a block away from a cemetery that is situated next to the cross roads…the universe has a sense of humor), you see mountains, children playing, dogs barking, pigeons perching along the roof tops enjoying the afternoon sun. Every day is never the same, the people, the sounds, the trains, even the feeding schedule may be a minutes behind once in a while. I dreamt of place like this when I was a child, now I’m living it and am happy. Remember to be safe, respect your elders as well as yourself, treat others the way you want to be treated and always listen to the universe. Oh for those who wonder do I ever long for an adventure, my dears everyday is an adventure.

I used to do a lot of wilderness camping. Situational awareness is very important. I went a step further, and kept a Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum stashed in my vehicle (All-wheel-drive, by the way). My motto was hope for the best , but prepare for the worst. I only used the gun once. I shot at a tree to scare off a coyote that was getting a little too close for comfort. The tree survived, and the coyote ran away.

I stood on the Folly Beach of SC. I was with my brother and we both knew the dangers of the north end of the beach-the jetties. We calmly sat as we watch the sun rising above the waves and also watched a group of surfers going gun-ho into the water with their large surfboards. No roads behind us and far from the road that we came in on, we realized the boys had no idea of the danger. We watched very worriedly as they paddled out, and BAM! We saw a board go flying in the air and it was completely broken in half. The rest of the surfers returned to the shore panting and worn to a frazzle, but one lone surfer was missing. They stood talking for a while but then headed back toward the road a half a mile away. One surfer found out about the dangerous jetties of the entrance to Charleston harbor with treacherous rising tides.
