I get many praise Corelli more and hail him as the greatest, his color and technique, but for me he doesn't shake my core as Mario, I can't imagine what it must've been like to be at the same venue as him

I prefer Corelli for his emotional and melancholic interpretation and his more freedom at top, however MDM is still great because of the fierceness and sheer power in his thrilling voice, in general I also prefer Corelli to MDM because he has the better and more beautiful voice but MDM’s technic and his squillo in puccini and late verdi are stunning too

Но у Corelli - энергетика гения, это очевидно и очень заметно даже в записи, а не в живую. Соответственно, у него все качественнее и сильнее, чем у других теноров, все более красочно и выражено: легато, вибрато, скилло, диминуэндо, цвет, звук, харизма, темперамент, страсть, печаль, эмоции, чувственность.. внешность, опять же ) И совершенно потрясающие верхние ноты - чистая энергия и красота. Этакое одновременное сочетание кровной жизненной энергии, солнца, золота и бриллиантового звучания ) и не статичного, традиционного, а очень современного звучания, надо сказать. Представляю, как он наэлектризовывал во время выступлений всех вокруг - и публику, и партнеров. К тому же Corelli очень щедрый - как певец, он не бережет себя, как многие певцы, не тянет силу с окружающих, а напротив, раздаривает свои богатства : красоту, энергию, талант, голос, буквально тратит их - на публику, поклонников, партнеров, что ощущается почти физически даже через давние и такие несовершенные записи.. Это очень редкий для певцов и актеров дар - щедрость гения, который вдохновляет тех, кто слушает его и по-настоящему слышит. Так что выбор очевиден. Corelli, без сомнения.

Del Monaco and Corelli are great spinto/dramatico tenors. Although shouldn't be looked to for voice technique by young singers. Both had big natural voices and could afford to adopt the lowered larynx style of singing (Corelli used a little, Del Monaco a lot more, hence why he couldn't sing sottovoce). Not saying young singers shouldn't listen to them but to be mindful that this technique is not for everyone. Great singers to listen to would be Björling, Gigli, Volpi, for examples of balanced voices that sing soft, forte, different colours in the voice etc.

Although mezza voce was not a great strength for MDM, there are many examples of MDM on YT singing mezza voce. O Paradiso, The Flower song, Cielo e Mar, Forza duet, Otello arias, La Juive aria, Manon Lescaut, Loengrin, Complete Lamento di Federico in mezza voce, 1954 Rarrisimo Napoli, where he encores the E Lucevan Le Stelle with mezza voce & a reinforced diminuendo. I think the lower larynx technique contributed to their large voice. Early on MDM's wife told him she could not hear him pass the 3rd row in the theater. MDM went back to Melocchi & together they built one of the most impressive voices in history.

Yes, as I mentioned in some previous statements, mezza voce and diminuendo were not MDM's strong points, but I object to people that say He NEVER used mezza voce, which is not accurate, regardless whether it was acceptably pleasant or not. 1990 Corelli Zucker interviews, discuss Laryngeal method and MDM and other tenor's that used the method. Corelli states that He, himself was born with a mezza voce, but mezza voce is very difficult to use with the laryngeal technique, although some singers were able to do it, but for the most part, this was not the case. Early Del Monaco could be heard in the theater, but prior to going to Melocchi his voice was quite small and very lyric, rejected because of inaudibility. After studying with Melocchi for many years, He emerged with an immense voice from a 20% scale to a 90% scale. Corelli's words. MDM adhered to Dynamic markings in the studio, as Dynamic markings are more adhered to in studio recordings than in live performances, where many great tenor's including Corelli, Gigli, Tucker, Volpi, Martinelli took liberties with the Music. Not many tenor's, or maybe none other than Corelli, have done an effective writtendiminuendo off the last B-Flat in Celeste Aida. There is no diminuendo written in 'E Lucevan Le Stelle, and I never heard any tenor but Lauri Volpi do A mezza voce on the A-Natural on Talore Dal Mio Forziere in Boheme. The original score of the Di Quella Pira high notes are Gs, but most tenors interpolate a B- Natural or High C. Does anyone care when Corelli runs ahead of tempos in live performances to get to his great high notes? How about Domingo, transposing "No Pagliaccio Non Son' a half tone down and avoiding the 2nd B-flat in the aria "Not adhering to the score"which should be a B-Natural but brings the house down at the Met. Of course the musical markings in the score should be adhered to, so perhaps we should avoid listening to every other tenor other than Bjorling's beautiful, but cold and small voice. Perhaps MDM could have been another JB if He didn't go to Melocchi to study. ' Food for thought. Enjoy

It’s unpleasant to understand that the author, clearly sympathizing with Mario del Monaco, deliberately not only uses a video with increased sound (by the editor, because it’s too loud) for one and deliberately lower volume with Corelli, but also during editing cuts off the top notes in the middle of Franco in order to make more time to give it to Mario. Los dos son excelentes, el Sr. Mario tiene una voz de pecho con mucho cuerpo, presencia y claridad en los tonos graves y tonos medios, la voz es abierta, es como un tenor medio barítono, en el agudo tiene su talon de Aquiles, casi un 50 por ciento de pecho y 50 por ciento nasal, usa la voz mas nasal para llegar a la nota alta y al mezclarla con la voz de pecho suena con algo de constricción. El Sr. Franco tiene también una voz con mucha presencia y brillo, no tanto en los tonos graves como en los agudos, es un tenor mas ligero, su voz es homogénea, tiene muchos matices en la interpretación, la parte aguda es su fuerte ya que la voz llega sin ningún problema casi un 80 por ciento de pecho y 20 por ciento nasal, con mucha claridad no denota constricción en ningún momento.

Shall I compare two giants just in one song? First of all, are they comparable at all? What are they, a great dane vs. a German shepherd? I do respect too much both of them to make such stupid comparisons.

Two great tenors. However Mario's recording here is poor, so a lot is lost. His warm open voice, clarity of tone mid baritone voice gives him the edge, and followed a close second by Franco. In about 1957 I bought Mario's recording in Rhodesian, of La Vita Inferno and Un Di All Azzuro, and was astounded at the power of his voice, and, how he "stood" on the highest notes with such ease and volume. I knew then that I would never hear anyone equal his singing of these two songs. That holds good to this day, 66 years later. Amazing. The same aplies to M' Appari. The greatest dramatic tenor so far.

Absolutely Corelli!!! Del Monaco sings coarsely, he was a great screamer. You cannot compare Corelli to anyone, Corelli is absolutely the greatest!! These comparisons leave the time they find. Corelli embodies all the quality and characteristics of 20th century bel canto, including the color of the Italian tenor voice. Please, forget it... there are no comparisons worthy of Franco Corelli's absolute level!?

Mi permetto far notare che la voce di Del Monaco è ripresa molto in primo piano rispetto alla voce di Corelli che risulta più lontana ed ovattata. Comunque, malgrado ciò , preferisco FRANCO CORELLI.

@Barone Vitellio Scarpia Both great singers, no doubt. But Corelli also used pharyngeal singing only not to that extreme extent. He was smart enough to alter that slightly when needed especially in the high notes. In my opinion the reason why his high notes were more ringing than MDM's. You say MDM could sing everything he wanted...yes, but many tenors can technically do that. The only remaining question is how does that sound? MDM's renditions of Neapolitaine songs for instance are not really what they can be. So, big pharyngeal singing at all times and cost isn't the holy grail. Subtle singing oftentimes does a musical piece more justice than bringing the whole house down with sheer power....

I won't argue with anyone about MdM's vocal abilities, but i just don't find him an interesting musician. Corelli is much better IMO
