The guardian cap was only introduced by the NFL to fight against future lawsuits by players. The NFLs argument in lawsuits will be that protective equipment was available but you chose not to wear it.

This was an excellent discussion of a difficult situation. As a physician, I totally get the risk he runs if he continues to play. And I get why people including former NFL players are advising him to retire. But I also freely admit that I have no understanding of the mindset of a truly elite athlete at the top of his game. He’s one of the 0.001 percent of people who can play quarterback at an elite level in the league. Every major decision we make in life is a calculation of risk vs benefit. Others may have their own strong opinions, but at the end of the day it’s his decision to make. I hope he gets the best information available so his decision is informed. But it’s his decision. I’m not a Dolphins fan but I enjoy football and would respect his decision even if medically I thought it was risky.

As much as have loved the Miami Dolphins since 1984, Tua being a good fit for Mike McDaniel's system, I don't know if Tua is making the right decision here. There were a lot of QBs that I remember that retired because of head trauma: Jim McMahon Stan Humphries Matt Schaub Chris Chandler And those are the ones that I can remember, I'm pretty sure there's a lot more. I pray for Tua's safety. Management of the Dolphins should draft another QB just in case.

From a person who use to ride bulls I went through the same situation, but instead of millions of dollars a year I was facing losing 30-50k a year. It was still one of the hardest decisions I ever made to quit. The guy deserves to make his own decision for himself. I got knocked out 5 out of 7 days in the same week and decided I was done. Is the true reason Tua wants to continue playing football for the love of the game or money? If I were to watch myself on film getting these concussions I would seriously reconsider my stance. In my opinion it would be best for the Dolphins to move on from Tua. The offense has a lot of good pieces right now and I would hate to see it go to waste. I think a more athletic and mobile QB would really elevate the offense. Tyler Huntley is not a bad option for now as he brings abilities to the offense that Tua did not have. There is definitely going to be more versatile play options available with Tyler. That being said Dolphins should draft a QB next year.

I'm 36 right now and dealing with the effects of several concussions from high school football, soccer and a severe one from a car accident that landed me in hospital for a week. On similar videos, I've been saying that Tua should retire from the NFL and play in the American Flag Football League (AFFL) because it's still professional football without the risk of concussions. I've also been saying that Tua getting 4+ concussions puts the sport's future at risk because fewer people are playing youth/high school football although youth/high school football participation has been falling since 2000-2010, it still has some people wondering if the sport is safe enough to play even though the NFL is spending millions even billions on safer helmets to prevent concussions.

I play beer league with this ultra talented little guy, 5’9” 150lbs fast good hands and great player. He quit playing competitive hockey because of concussions. 7th game of the year, doesn’t pass ever just tries to beat everyone, he tried to go around this big defenseman and the dman just gave him a playful check into the boards, no I’ll intent, just a small check letting him know he isn’t better than everyone. Full yard sale, stick, gloves on the ice, kids unconscious and had to call an EMT they carted him off. It was really scary, but there was no big hit, just a small bang on the boards when his helmet hit it. We found out literally any contact he makes to his head will just knock him out and that’s why he quit playing pro. He loves the game, but doesn’t love himself enough to avoid head contact or just stop all together. Tua should have been fine in that hit, it wasn’t that bad or hard. Tua’s prone to concussions and shouldn’t be playing if even small tackles sideline him for a few weeks, IMO. if it’s about money, I’m sure he could secure a job in the Dolphins organization and negotiate a deal on his contract and retire. $120 million in cap hit, when he won’t play will damage his team and organization. If he cares about his team, he will negotiate and retire. $23 million spent well could benefit his family for 50 years, living a somewhat lavish lifestyle. Let the Dolphins trade for or sign/ draft another QB and use this top offense to get a chance at a Super Bowl, instead of tying up money into someone who may play 10 games a season.

There’s a clearly defined set of concussion protocols administered by independent doctors and overseen by the NFL. Once he passes the testing protocol they really have no legal grounds to prevent him from playing. I’m not happy at all to be saying this, but that’s how the rules work at this time. And the truly sad part is that all this independent medical oversight was initiated after the 2022 season because of the “Oh, it was just my back” bs regarding those 2 concussions Tua had just a few days apart.

I've had 3 big concussion in high school and now I suffer from major depression episodes and bad thoughts all the time everything seemed it would be fine then got into my late 20s and really started to feel the effects looking at it now was never worth it coming back after the second one

I’m 39 years old, have a history of multiple concussions. The bad news comes recently that I have cte in my brain stem and spreading to the rest of my brain slowly. The specialist said I’ve have over 45 concussions, and feeling it now. Vision issues and migraines are just the start…… personal experience it’s very challenging.

His whole family rides on this also there’s that element in his decision. I feel bad for the doctors that has to clear him for his return. Hope it turns out good in the long run.

So after watching this, I feel compelled to say something! As a former football player, & someone who just loves the game!!! So a few years after my senior year in high school, the head coach who coached me for 4 years highered me as an assistant coach! I was then diagnosed with a brain tumor!!! I can completely understand Tua's situation! And as someone who has had to go through multiple brain operations, it is probably the1thing that don't want to mess with! I hate to say it, but he should probably retire, because after you've had a concussion it is much easier to have more!!!

What nobody is talking about is that if they managed his first NFL concussion correctly (ie more time off), then maybe he doesn't get a 2nd and 3rd concussion. So the mismanagement of his injury cost him his career.

Back when I was 26, I would have made the same decision as Tua. You don't have the life experience at that age to appreciate the consequences of your actions. What happens to you when you are 50+ seems like forever into the future. I would have to be seriously hurt to stop playing. Naturally, he will regret it when he gets older but hopefully, he will still have enough money to get the best possible medical care.

I always think of Austin Collie when the subject of football head trauma comes up. I hated the dude when he was in college because he played for BYU and I'm a Utah fan, but there was no denying he was a great receiver and totally fearless. He ended up getting drafted and playing a few years with Peyton Manning on the Colts, and Manning loved him because he was fast, smart, and would go over the middle like a crazy man with no regard for his own safety. And then, in what ended up being the last year of his short pro career, Collie suffered three really bad concussions in a short span--just a few months, I think--including one on a nationally televised game against the Eagles, which I was watching live and rate as the third worst football thing I've ever personally witnessed (Alex Smith's broken leg being the second worst, and Damar Hamlin literally dropping dead on the field being the very worst). The first time I ever heard the term "fencing" in relation to a head injury was when Collie took that huge hit--the kind of hit that wouldn't be legal today--and he wisely made the decision to retire at the end of that season. Unfortunately, he was too late: I know people here in Utah with connections to Austin Collie, and they have told me that he has had some cognitive problems in recent years. Nothing too serious, just short term memory issues, headaches, and the like, but stuff a 40-ish year old guy shouldn't have, and which we know can be signs of CTE and/or general brain damage caused by repeated trauma. Hopefully Collie doesn't get any worse as he ages, but the scary thing about brain injuries is that there's no consistency to it as far as anyone can tell. Some people can get dozens of concussions and have no problems later in life, other people may end up with symptoms despite seemingly suffering fewer concussions (and the "seemingly" qualifier may be the problem), and other people can end up with debilitating CTE in middle age just from the thousands of small shocks the brain takes every time the ball is snapped and the helmets of opposing linemen collide. It seems like Tagovailoa is or has become more susceptible to concussions, which is definitely a thing we know can happen, but what we don't know is whether or not he'll suffer long-term effects because of those concussions, or what those effects might be. I'm sure most people would keep playing football if they knew the worst they'd have is splitting headaches in their 50s or 60s, but would they keep playing if they knew they'd never feel happy after age 45? Or that they wouldn't be able to drive, or remember by the night time what they did that morning? What if they knew they'd have serious symptoms but that they wouldn't hit until age 80, would that be worth it? How about age 70? 60? Would they be willing to risk their personality changing and them becoming violent with the people they love? Maybe even that would be worth it for wealth that would change the lives of generations of your family? I have no answers to any of these questions. But I'm thinking today about Austin Collie and how short his professional football career was.

Everyone thinks they know what Tua should do, and what they’d do if they were in his shoes. But the reality is, nobody really knows that until they actually face the situation Tua is facing … to abandon a lifelong dream at 26 years old. It’s not about the money … he’s got plenty of that. The very nature of a professional athlete is antithetical to the concept of quitting, or playing it safe, because of their deeply competitive nature, and love of the game. I am therefore not the least bit surprised by Tua’s decision. In fact, I would have been shocked had he announced his intention to retire. I don’t think that was ever a possibility. Football is inherently a dangerous sport, and players risk their health every time they take the field. They have long ago reconciled that fact. When you’re 26, and in peak physical condition, you feel you can handle whatever hard hits come your way. No doubt he convinced himself that he only needs to make smarter decisions on the field, and protect himself better, moving forward.

Many good GB’s have flaws. No QB is perfect. Some flaws are worse than others, unfortunately, Tuas flaw is not protecting himself from head injuries.
