I have a wood window above my bathtub. I'm adding a shower above the bathtub, so I'm going to remove the double-hung wood window and put in a shower surround. Above the shower surround I'm going to put a very thin awning window up high. That awning window will be vinyl. Thank you for explaining how you waterproofed this window. Could you write in the description the name of caulk you used and the board you used? It's difficult to figure out the spelling from just listening to the video. I'd like to get the very flexible caulk you mentioned. Thanks!

I'm about to tackle this same situation, my concern is waterproofing the corners. I was going to purchase a KERDI niche and cutout the corners to install on the window opening to the KERDI board and fill in the rest with KERDI board. With how you used KERDI band in the corners, does that give a proper seal with the required 2" overlap? Your way would be much easier and less expensive.

What's your go-to silcone caulk for your shower/tub surround? Every 100% silcone brand that claims to be mold/mildew resistant found in the big box stores seems to always mold and mildew after a year or two. Any suggestions from a pro is greatly appreciated

I have a window in the tub area and the window is set in the wall will only 1 inch space around it. I was going to cut ceramic bullnose trim 1 inch wide to place inside around the perimeter of the window. Cutting tile only 1 inch wide can be a problem. Is there another possible solution to this? This is really great. Much better than the Schluter video of fixed elements dealing with a window since their window is in plane with the kerdi board and you have a sill etc. quick question: how high up (over the kerdi board) do you run the bead of kerdi fix when you are getting the kerdi band to stick to the frame. That is hard to tell from your video. In other words how much of the frame is covered with the kerdi band. It appears to be very small (like 1/8”) but I’m not sure. Im assuming it’s not a huge deal so long as the height is not more than the thickness of the tile since the tile will cover up the kerdi band on the frame?

I have a job doing tile on a floor in an old New England building with a wood floor that looks like the ocean lol. Not sure if I'm going to use self-leveling concrete or dry pack it or both. Sal, I’m remodeling a bathroom, and need you advice. I’ve installed the cement board into and over the lip of the tub, and wanted to waterproof as I’ve seen you do on one of your videos. What I’m trying to figure out is this. First question, do i use silicone caulk between the cement board and tub, let it dry, then follow up with waterproof membrane, or is the silicone caulk the last step, ie between installed tile and the tub. Second question, is waterproof membrane applied to fabric tape attached to the TUB and cement board to form a seal, I couldn’t see it very well in the video. Thanks John

I've tested Kerdi fix 3 times with different experiments and I can say that it is not waterproof. Kerdi fix is different from Wedi sealant in that Wedi sealant is waterproof and Kerdi fix is only an elastic adhesive. Wouldn't it be better to run a bead of silicone on the window sill vs. Kerdi fix?

Depends on what you are trying to seal, Kerdi to membrane not good, but Kerdi Fix to a tub or a window like this will work great.

It's usually because the houses that have them were built in the 20s showers weren't a thing back then. Everyone had claw foot tubs next to the window and the windows provided light to the room.

Good presentation as always! Do You have an opinion on seven inch tabletop wet saws, particularly for long rips on large format ties? I have a smaller Felker with a sliding table and am tiling my own bathroom with 12 by 24 inch botticino marble with a mesh backing. Trying to cut such a large tile on a small sliding table has resulted in cracked tiles. I am not a pro just a former carpenter working on my own home and considering buying a fixed table wet saw to do long rips for this project. It seems to me that pushing a large format marble tile along a fence might be more trouble that its worth.

Generally the table top saws are a DIY tool, for large tiles a good wet saw with a sliding tray or a bridge saw work best. My concern is more with the mesh backed marble tile you are using. If it has resin on the back of the tile, you should be using an epoxy thinset to set the tile, no matter what the store you bought it from tells you.

very helpful video; I'm surprised Schluter has not provided some guidance on how to tackle windows in showers on their own because it seems like the most difficult area to waterproof with their system. I was going to do something similar in a shower stall with a similar configuration. however, i already have 1/2" drywall in place and was planning on sloping the sill with thinset prior to installing the kerdi membrane which would butt up against the window frame via kerdi-fix. A marble sill with a bead of silicone would go on top of the membrane. Do you forsee any issues with this? I would essentially lose the 1st layer of waterproofing from your installation since I have drywall instead of kerdi board and kerdi fix on top of the framing. thanks for your contributions!

I never like to see a window in a shower, and you can only do so much to waterproof, if the window itself leaks, well I don't know what you can do about that.

Good question! If windows aren't manufactured to make that part waterproof, maybe it's a good idea to shorten the window, so only the upper half is window and the lower half is converted into the shower wall.

Windows should have weep holes. They get water in them from the exterior as well on single and double hung windows. Their weeps holes will dry out the track itself. Wood windows would be more of an issue, but hopefully you just have vinyl in a bathroom. Hope your project went well.

Love your work Sal and I am going to use your waterproof method for my niche and window. Obviously in this video the window is brand new so it will outlive the bathroom. In my home I will probably have to replace my windows in the next 15-20 years and have no plans to re tile the bathroom again in my lifetime, so... Will this method of sealing the board to the window frame cause problems/damage when I need to remove my frames one day? My idea, what do you think?... is to leave a small gap between the kerdi board and the window frame. Then use some UPVC strips to bridge the gap and use silicone to seal it to the board and the window frame, tile up to the UPVC trim and silicone again. That way in future I can remove the frame without damaging the board/tile. Will that work and still be waterproof in your opinion? Thanks dude

I just found your channel. Maybe you can help. I have a whole bathroom tiled from floor to about 1/2 the wall. I dont want to tear out ALL the tile, but need to redo the bathtub/shower area and install new backer board and then re-tile. I also have a window to deal with in the shower which is how I found your channel. Can you provide some insight on how I can re-tile shower/tub area and match up next to the old tile without damaging . Would this kerdi board be the best method to deal with the window, and then use the kerdi fix to seal where the two areas come together (the old and new tile areas)? I will be spending some time on your channel to hopefully overcome this tile project. its my first one...and Im guessing I have more than a few challenges to overcome!

Shouldn't you have a slope on your window seal so that water doesn't stand on it? Perhaps build up a a little slope before putting on Kerdi board?

The bathroom is mostly gutted, with new sheet rock (I think) I want a tub with shower and do not want to cover the window with a surround. 1 How would it have slop if the wood window sill is level and how would you add a slope? 2 What is water proofing membrane you used called? 3 many people advise drawing a level line just above the tub and moving up. If you do that and meet the window sill which slopes from left to right how would you handle that.? 4. Finally. Why not use bullnose tiles to wrap over the window edge

Don't agree with how you tiled the window sill. Bullnose should be on top, that grout line will Crack and get mildew faster. Follow the flow of water.
