As an old-school tuba player (even at 31 years old) I miss when tuba sections played primarily in the lower regions of the horn. The high notes aren't really anything new and it's cool, but it's a tuba. Not a baritone.

I find it very impressive when they're able to reach up into that upper register and still sound cohesive. I feel like it takes power and skill

@thutmosedodd4429 folks can be loud, but where's the quality of tone.
@cchisolm92cc8 ай бұрын
@bbvivertube it does. We started playing more high notes at jsu around 14 & 15. But them boys are something different now.

I feel like it isn’t a matter of a loss of culture more so a evolution of it, while a lot of tuba sections do play in the higher register I feel like the current day fanfares for tuba has more variation when it comes down to complexities and stylistic choices in the fanfares, the old school fanfares are a lot simpler.

@sholiday. Luv the review bro. For FAMU's first fanfare, its called "White Whales" and its the name of the section. FAMU sousa philosophy is "short and sweet" and not over blowing. Oh So Sweet, Whompin' White Whales!!!

I really like famus sound but their fanfares are kinda corny lol. They sound like a bass guitar and are veeeery balanced. I dont care much for the super "plucky" sound when some sections get high. It loses the character of the horn. You need a nice wide sound regardless of the range. This is a problem with euphs lately too, where some sections will try and play consistently above a high concert C. Just play mellophone instead lol. A nice ringing C goes well in SOME situations but choose it wisely. Ok rant over. Nice video.
