It's so good to see TubaS appear before so many separate and diverse groups. Better ambassadors of this jazz can hardly be found.

Thanks for filming this, Eric Alan Isaacson. 'It's so good' was recorded for the Okeh Company in December 1930 by Charlie McCoy - apparently in the key of E (though this may be the distorting effect of recording processes at the time). Tuba Skinny sensibly play it in E flat, much easier for a traditional jazz band. The tune is an uncomplicated three-chorder: an opening eight bars (Verse) that are virtually identical to the first eight bars of 'West Indies Blues', followed by the 16-bar 'Chorus' in which there is space for a 'break' on the Eb chord in bars 7 and 8. You can hear Shaye hover on a lovely bluesy flattened high G flat (1 min 04 secs) when it's her turn to take the two-bar break.

There might not be a better tune than "It's So Good" for showcasing Tuba Skinny's musical inventiveness, especially the way instruments take breaks or join in for a thrillingly emphatic finale. Moment by moment, the band's arrangements keep changing things up to keep the music fresh and lively. Nothing overstays its welcome! At the very start Craig reveals his copy of the arrangement, a simple list of key sequences.

Most folks can tap out a 2/4 or 4/4 rhythm I suppose, but look out for breaks & stops. After that it takes a good bit more ... listening especially, getting a left hand to be anything but a slave to the right (or vice versa), building up arm / hand speed, varied strums & touch on different surfaces, and learning each tune and the bands arrangement. Robin Rapuzzi is a miracle. He a fine composer too, by the way
