I love this performance. Shaye's playing is superb, but what is also endearing is her facial expressions which reveal a love of the music and love for the little girl who adds to the tip bucket and who seems (at least in my mind) to be impressed with Shaye when (4:11) the girl points at Shaye. The dancers also add a nice touch to the video.

Thanks for being there to capture this for us, Randy. It's not often we find them on video playing 'Trouble in Mind', or Max taking a vocal. Richard M. Jones is believed to have composed this eight-bar Chorus in 1924; and Tuba Skinny play it in the key of A flat. Incidentally, the song also has a 16-bar Verse, though Tuba Skinny - like most bands - don't include it.
@axeleast86323 жыл бұрын
Could I persuade you to replace 'is believed ' with 'claimed''? Leonard Feather wrote that Jones 'was composer of many tunes whose authorship was subsequently much disputed'.
@PopsCoffee3 жыл бұрын
Mr. Feather, I understand, could at times be a disseminator of what today we call 'fake news'. I'm inclined to give Mr. Jones the benefit of the doubt. He was an important and creative character in the early days of traditional jazz. Also, he played the piano authoritatively on the earliest recording of 'Trouble in Mind' - the 1924 version with Thelma La Vizzo on vocal and including the 16-bar Verse. It is true that the eight-bar Chorus is based on a very simple chord progression that could have been used in earlier folk music but this does not mean Jones did not create the song. There are dozens of examples of tunes being based on familiar chord sequences. One of the most sophisticated is Thelonius Monk's 'In Walked Bud', an original composition but using chords not a whit dissimilar to those of 'Blue Skies'.
@RaoulDuke504RC3 жыл бұрын
@@PopsCoffee Thanks Ivan. I definitely went down the proverbial rabbit-hole reading about the murky history of this song.
@PopsCoffee3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Randy! The best thing I found down the rabbit-hole was the original recording made by Richard and Thelma. She sings the Verse and then several Choruses: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4exlZeuitx0hMk
@axeleast86323 жыл бұрын
@@PopsCoffee On reflection, I regret my previous comment which was based on my misinterpreting your 'Jones is believed to have composed this ....'. Since 1924 there has not been a shred of doubt that RMJ was the composer because no-one would copyright anything that is not entirely his own work. I wonder where Leonard Feather got his 'information'.
