A shout out to you Jeremy Schmidt for the design. I've been researching 2X72 belt sanders for a couple of years. Both commercially built and DIY. When you came on you-tube with yours I watched the build 4 or 5 times. I believe your design is the best of all the grinders.

While I am a fan of your channel I have never commented before. I own a belt grinder that I use every day so I am sure you will love the machine, but the thing of note is that is a beautiful machine. The attention to detail in the construction is just stunning, as well as the design elements he put in just to make it look good. If I was in the market I would be looking at his machine just for that. You would be doing him a large favor if you did a better walk around talking about the cosmetic details and the construction, you can tell it is a labor of love.

Wow, I'm impressed, that machine is far better constructed then anything manufactured! Very versatile as well. Palmer is obviously extremely talented, not to mention a generous guy for loaning it to our favorite shop teacher! Mr Pete, I remember when you were discussing brill bit sharpening and called the jig a novelty gimmick and put it out of its misery. I cheered because I see no reason for a jig when it's so easy to freehand sharpen a drill bit.

What a generous man! I think you'll discover this will quickly become your favorite grinder and it will far exceed the expected one year stay in your shop! As a custom knife maker I have also built several of these grinders all based on the KMG design which I like very much. In addition to the flat platen and 6, 8, and 10 inch contact wheels that I have I made a set of small contact wheels of 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch diameter which are very handy for grinding small radiuses, I would enjoy very much watching you build a set of these small wheels (if you so choose) as a first addition to your new machine! :)

OK Mr. Pete, you've been giving me shop lessons for years now, it's time for me to reciprocate and give you a geography lesson. Ft. Worth is approximately the same latitude as Dallas, which is 50-60 miles south of indian country, aka North Texas. San Antonio is 350-400 miles south in South Texas. San Antonio is also where the Alamo is, where we fought a great battle in 1836 and eventually became a sovereign nation, The Republic of Texas. Texas chose to join the Union ten years later, and did so....the ONLY state to do so by treaty and not annexation. Indeed we still retain vestiges of our sovereignty.....and that Texas attitude! Greetings from the Republic Mr. Pete, we love you down here and y'all are welcome any time.

The basement stairs - by chance I just today bought a milling machine from a friend. It's a smaller one, but it was in the basement and we had to get the base which I guess weighs about 350 pounds up the steps. He had a full size bridgeport down there too which he says is "never coming out of there."

What you said got my attention. You said "It's never easy.". And it reminded me of someone who said "If you are not doing something hard, you are wasting your life.". Same thing when JFK said, "We chose to go to the moon and back not because it is easy but because it is hard.". Just don't know if those were the exact words but it has guided me thru all these 64 years. Thanks for the excellent videos. It relaxes me (your voice does) and feeds my brain so as not to succumb to alzheimer's.

I've watched that series, Jeremy did a fine job with it. That drill bit sharpening attachment could be further developed for shaping high speed tool bits, maybe the radius attachment as well. It's an idea to explore, anyway. I was working on an area in the shop, trying to get it ready for concrete, and unearthed something I thought was long gone. I plan to send you a few pictures of it for you to use in your "What Is It?" series.

A variable speed 2x72 is easily the single most useful tool you'll ever use. You wouldn't think so, until you have one, especially when you get accessories like a large contact wheel and a small wheel attachment. As a knifemaker I use mine daily, but I find that I also use it nearly every day for something other than knives. 2x72's aren't cheap, but in the long run they really are the best investment. Abrasive belts are a huge consumable cost, especially over time. A 2x72 belt is extremely economical per area of abrasive compared to other sizes and the varieties of belts for 2x72 are nearly limitless.

Nice looking machine. If you want, you can change the mode and with a little math that L510 VFD will display the surface feet per minute. Change 12-04 to "1" (whole integer) and then calculate the value to program into 12-03 to give SFM. It defaults to showing motor RPM, but you can scale it. I use it to display actual spindle RPM on my drill press.
@palmermoynihanvault27807 жыл бұрын
Time was so short when I was headed to Arnfest that I didn't get to accomplish details like that but the reason that I over rev the machine to 87 cycles per second is that the diameter of the drive wheel that runs on the split bushing is just less than 4 inches.....therefore when you measure the real circumference of the drive wheel it is exactly or very close to 12" or one foot......so you can quickly see that rpm also equals surface feet per minute.......so that is why I speed up the 3450 RPM motor......no scaling chart necessary to know the surface feet per minute.
@jonrbryan7 жыл бұрын
That's great, program 12-04 to "1" and you're done. I also changed the Carrier Frequency 11-01 from the default 5khz to 16khz, because I can't hear 16khz. It didn't make any difference in the motor performance that I could determine, and I don't have to listen to that annoying whistle. I did the same thing with the Fuji VFD I put on my little Clausing mill. The whistle was really getting on my nerves. I'm sure that you already know that a 1725rpm inverter duty motor is perfectly happy running 3450rpm. I've got my drill press running from 250 to 3100. It usually has plenty of torque at the low speed, and I can always switch back to two belts and the idler if I need to spin a big Forstner bit in hard wood.

I built my first one several years ago - started out as a GIB (Grinder In a Box), but wound up being a fairly elaborate build - e.g. precision ground axles, etc. Agree that they are dirty to run. I now wear a respirator when I use mine (almost daily) and am building a new grinder similar to Jeremy Schmidt's design (I purchased his plans and support him on Patreon, and encourage others to buy the plans at least - Jeremy really made a huge unique contribution to the "abrasive machining" community. Now to my point - I wonder if someone will develop a dust collection system for these grinders?

Also, like Palmer said building the accessories is the fun part. You can make specialty bars for particular sanding, grinding, deburring, buffing etc. operations. I even saw where a guy installed an approximate 8" sanding disc to the motor drive wheel and built a table for supporting objects during sanding/grinding operations. With this machine the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. I built a rotary platen for mine. Here is a link to the one I built. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqmsaZKOmduLhJY John
