This game changing record sounded like the future in 1979 and you know what, it absolutely was!!

Great reaction! I remember hearing this on my local college radio station in 1979 and immediately running out to buy the LP.

Gary is a genious, he created the dark synth music and goths go after! All is in classic minor tones - what we like the more!

Great commentary. As you said, Gary Numan sings in a kind of robotic fashion which lends to the feeling of detachment the song is talking about. I think a lot of his songs speak to his own insecurities that he has talked about in interviews. Like the line, "The candle lit shadow on the wall near the bed". It's like he described his friend has become a shadow. As if he feels he doesn't really know his friend as well as he should. I've watched a couple of your reactions to Gary Numan songs. And I really feel like you understand Gary Numan's music. It was great to hear you sharing your experience. I have subscribed.

There was this era in Boston where they would play specific songs before the band came on and this was one of them so you knew you had to rush the stage. Nice reactions I love your channel

Released 1979. Great to see this here first thing in the morning! I'll be feeding you a couple more Gary Numan songs, 1.) "You Are In My Vision, and 2.) Cars. For anyone else out there who are Gary Numan fans, maybe you can as well add songs to the journey for us, as I am a novice stuck in a particular time period with him, and have been taught by my good friend Chris that Gary Numan has a whole catalogue of songs continuing right to the present day.

Don't do cars every other reactor only ever do that song! Start with down in the park, films. M. E., I dream of wires, etc etc but thanks for even reviewing Numan because he is criminally underrated and not reviewed enough! 👽👽👽👽👽👽👽🏴🏴🏴🏴

@@daviddeath6029 I do flinch a bit suggesting "Cars" but thought since it was his most well known song I'd throw it in. However, if you are more knowledgeable about his large catalogue down to this very day, please, by all means, make suggestions! It's great having Philip reacting to him. He clearly enjoys it!

One of the first singles I bought, I played this over and over and that’s how my obsession with synth started ❤

Heavy, black, prowling electronica. It often could be light and frivolous (not always bad) but this deep down, no nonsense, hard as nails electro sound is the mood I've always been drawn to. Blade Runner world.

In case no one mentioned it this song was a future prediction of how humans have become so divided with each other they'd rather hire a robot prostitute to make love to and you can hear this in his words when he says, "I don't mean anything to you" and "you mean everything to me". And he also refers to the robot prostitute as "his friend he left in the hallway". This song came out in 1979 and you can watch a great live version of this from an older BBC show called "Top of the Pops" here on YT from the early 1980's with the hair styles and clothing they wore back then.

Gary Numan has a long career that is still ongoing. I ran into a new friend I made from the UK who lives in Manchester who is seeing Gary Numan in concert. Apparently he has just released a brand new album, "Intruder", which I have never heard before, but I will take on the homework to listen to this album, and likely forward some new music from Gary Numan. The other song that my friend Chris was going on about is a Gary Numan song, "My Name is Ruin". So I'll have to listen to some Gary Numan that I've not heard before, and hopefully forward a few tracks to you for future programs Philip.

Was at one of the Manchester gigs a few days ago. It's a 45th anniversary celebration of the first two albums released in 1979. Pretty much every song on those albums is included. The best gig I've been to in my 59 years. The man is a genius and a legend.

Hi.Are "friends"electric reached number 1 on the uk music charts back in 1979 and stayed there for 4 weeks.the song is set in the not so distant future, were people could have a "friend" come to their home. These "friends" are not human, they are androids but they appear so real that nobody can tell the difference. The "friend" in the song is actually a prostitute but they provided many different services.Enjoyed your review of this game changing classic 👍
