Yazz (Yasmin Evans) is a London solo singer. Yazoo/Yaz is an Essex duo which includes former Depeche Mode singer Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet, who had known one another since schooldays. Both Yazz and Yazoo are British and began performing in the 80s, but as one is a woman of British/Jamaican heritage, and the other is a duo, it shouldn't be difficult to tell them apart.

As probably countless people are correcting you guys, Yazz and Yazzo are two completely different artists. As you correctly pointed out Yazzo features Vince Clark on keyboards who was an original member of Depeche Mode with outstanding vocals by Alison Moyet who is a formidable solo artist in her own right. (Should check her work out you’ll be amazed) Yazz is short for Yasmine Evens and was originally from London, she was a very successful model and dancer for becoming a singer, she also has an excellent back catalog of solo work worth checking out, hope this clears things up for you guys. 🤟

@@comicdave1962 Good point. Clarke is no doubt known more for Erasure than DM. However, I thought I'd mention DM because Amber mentioned it, which, in retrospect, I should have given her credit for doing so, which I guess I'm doing so right now.
@britishknightakaminininja112311 ай бұрын
Haha I swear your explanation only made it more confusing, even though you started well. Spot on that Yazz is only the singer, and this record was actually credited to the band who were known as "Yazz And The Plastic Population" both on this and the slightly earlier 'feature' on Coldcut's "Doctorin' The House" (both of which were hits in 1988). Yazoo was a duo act that had massive critical and commercial success years earlier, and had already disbanded by 1988. The way you mentioned the singer and the wholly different group in the same sentence gets confusing when even this record was by a group (Yazz And The Plastic Population) rather than Yazz as a solo artist.

Hi from the UK: home of both Yazz in the US (Yazoo elsewhere) and Yazz and the Plastic Population (this band). As stated below, they are two different bands. Yazoo was Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, while Yazz and the Plastic Population is Yasmin Evans and the Plastic Population were her band. This was their first hit, in 1987. By 1987 Yazoo was done and dusted: Alison Moyet (whose solo work needs to be looked at) had gone solo and Vince was in Erasure with Andy Bell. Vince was in Depeche Mode, which is French for fashion despatch, and was a magazine in France when the band was named. It is actually Dépêche Mode - "Depesh Mod", but became "Depesh Mode" with the band.

Yazz is Yasmin Evans (born 19 May 1960). Yazoo is comprised of Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet

Yazoo had Alison Moyet and the connection to Depeche Mode, but this was Yazz and The Plastic Population. Great female vocalist around at the same time as Lisa Stansfield. And “yes” Jordan this was a “club banger” 😂 For more 80’s bangers try Black Box - ‘Ride on Time’ Or Starlight - ‘Numero Uno’

'The Only Way is Up' is a great song, but you should definitely edit the title, Yazoo is Alison Moyet and VInce Clarke -- In the US they had to be called Yaz at time, but now everyone knows them as Yazoo now. Yazz is Yasmin Evans and is a bit of a one hit wonder. But Yazoo have loads of great songs; Only You, Don't Go, Nobody's Diary, Situation to name a few.

Yazoo is also known as Yaz in America so it was an easy mistake to make... great reaction! really enjoyed this one!

they were actually sued in Britain by a record label (Yazoo records) using the name Yazoo. so in North America they switched their name to Yaz. ... hence"upstairs at Erics" by Yaz in the U.S. and North America.

Well, this was a bummer! The confusion is because Vince Clarke (of DM fame) and Alison Moyet were Yazoo in the UK (early 80s), but here in the US there was a record label called Yazoo Records. In order to avoid copyright issues they went by Yaz in the US. This woman, however, goes (went?) by Yazz in the late 80s, and she can't hold a candle to Alison Moyet! You've already heard "Situation" and "Don't Go," but now you need to hear "Only You" and "Nobody's Diary" just to wash this one away.

Yazz burst onto the scene with this single which many of us predicted that contrary to the songs lyric this would be the absolute summit of her career and the only way really was down.

Yazz is a solo artist. Yazoo was a band with Alison Motet, who is an amazing vocalist. Two separate bands.
