Great video, TF! I had a similar kind of idea a little while ago, because I wanted to see what the best 16-game spans were in NFL history. This required me to create four era-adjusted stats: CP+, Rtg+, ANY+, and SQ. The first three are measured relative to the rest of the league during the span, on a scale where 100 is average and higher is better (like baseball), measuring completion percentage, passer rating, and adjusted net yards per attempt, respectively. The last is span quality, which is equal to (20% × CP+) + (40% × Rtg+) + (40% × ANY+). Patrick Mahomes has played 80 of what I call "games that matter," i.e., for quarterbacks, regular-season games in which they threw at least one pass attempt. I'm ignoring the playoffs because they don't count for career stats and because I excluded them from my sample of 16-game spans. In those 80 games, he has thrown for 24,241 yards (most among all 167 QBs with at least 80 games that matter in their first 80 such games), 192 TDs (most), and 49 INTs (T-6th fewest; Jeff Hostetler had 42 through 80 games), and managed a completion percentage of 66.3% (2nd highest behind Dak Prescott at 66.5%), a passer rating of 105.7 (highest), and an ANY/A of 8.05 (highest). That all aligns with this video. However, he is 64th in CP+ at 102.6 (Ken Stabler leads at 115.9), 25th in Rtg+ at 115.2 (Otto Graham leads at 140.5), and 16th in ANY+ at 129.6 (Norm van Brocklin leads at 159.2), and that adds up to an average SQ of 118.4 (19th; Graham is 1st at 141.2). That's not to discredit Mahomes from any of his accomplishments; in fact, it speaks to the vast improvements in the average performance of quarterbacks through the decades, that even in the most competitive and high-quality era of QB play, Mahomes still distinguishes himself from his peers. Among QBs who have played the majority of their careers in the 21st century, he is behind only Kurt Warner, Philip Rivers, and Aaron Rodgers in average span quality over the first 80 games of a career, and he blows them all out of the water with his career counting stats to that point. What Patrick Mahomes has done is nothing short of legendary, and as a Chiefs fan I sincerely hope it continues.

Before I say anything, i have to say good video, but out of the 6 categories, 3 are just are not fair to old quarterbacks at all. That being part 1, part 4, and part 5. Instead of just using those stats as is, you could compare those stats to the league average. For example, lets say a QB had a passer rating of 100 and a completion% of 65.0 over his 1st 5 years, and lets say the league averages over those 5 years were a 75 passer rating and a completion% of 55. Using the metric that u made the QB had a score of 165 and the average would have been 130. By dividing the QB score by the average score you could determine that the QB was 1.22× timer better than average QB in that category. This would account for era and it would make the video much more accurate. You could do the same for the other 2 categories. The other categories are fine though. Another thing could tweak is instead of a point system, you could just do average placement among the 6 categories.
@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Жыл бұрын
This is a great idea. I was wondering how to even out the eras a bit & it looks like you hit on a pretty good method.
@chicagodude8888 Жыл бұрын
Passer efficiency and bulk stats steadily increase every decade. Pro football references has adjusted passing category with ANY/A+ and passer rating+ which contextualizes how you rank among peers. 100 is dead average. It’s a more accurate tool otherwise Kirk Cousins is a first ballot hofer.
@tommyatwell380 Жыл бұрын
I would say it would be more interesting to make that "passing yards" stat "passing yards above average" so you’re comparing Mahomes to Allen and Herbert, and not to Aikman and Steve Young. It would have been MUCH more difficult to do but would probably provide a more accurate depiction of skill. Also All Pros should probably be worth more than pro bowls.

Does anyone else get a feeling that Mahomes is going to get hurt and struggle to stay on the field in the coming years? He's still so young and is clearly the best QB of his generation at this point, but at some point it's going to catch up to him. He doesn't play in a reckless way like Cam Newton or Lamar Jackson, but with my nearly 4 decades of following the NFL, I've seen this sort of thing happen before. I certainly don't hope for that to happen to him as he is amazing to watch and incredibly gifted, but there is an element of his game that relies on his athleticism and few athletic QB's like him are able to play at that level for very long. The one advantage he has is he is a really great pocket passer too (this past Super Bowl a perfect example) and can pick apart a defense without using his legs.

You count same categories double and triple while not adjusting for era (example; compl. pct + Rating, which already includes cmp pct)... Ofc Mahomes comes out on top then. Always loving your vids, but this one is really flawed. So here we go with real numbers (adjusted for era): Pcercentage above league average in passer rating per football-reference (random QBs chosen, min. 7 games played = at least 50% of games per "old" 14 game schedule): Mahomes 131 124 122 117 109 Rivers 127 126 120 115 101 McMahon 127 117 111 107 103 Marino 141 125 124 119 113 Unitas 135 127 125 116 106 Graham 149 142 134 120 110 Montana 134 124 123 122 118 You see the pattern? Mahomes is in the middle of random picked famous QBs in the history of pro football. Mahomes gets the benefit of the soft rules the NFL implemented for passers. People think he is the next "Jesus" because memory fades away. Yet every decade had its "Mohomes", or two, or three...

I'm fine with most of this, but Pro Bowl and All Pro are the most useless stats in football. Your list doesn't pass the eye ball test. Brady won 3 Superbowls with 3 SB MVPs but is number 13. Any stat that has McNabb higher in the first 5 years than Brady, Brees, Aikman, and Rodgers is a garbage stat. And total yards is misleading too. Although Peyton Manning was undeniably amazing, his teams passed much more often early in his career because the Colts sucked and played from behind.

Wait, so Pro Bowl and all pro selections are useless, but team achievements like Super Bowl wins are not.

@@theinternet4344 I would say just making it to multiple SBs like Jim Kelly is more impressive than Pro Bowls. Pro Bowls are popularity contests. Shaun O'Hara made the pro bowl after missing 10 games. TJ Watt missed 6 games and made the Pro Bowl. In 2019 Christian McCaffery somehow was snubbed from the pro bowl despite leading all rbs in receiving yards and having over 1700 scrimmage yards. The pro bowl selection is meaningless because it's a popularity vote.

Mahomes just won a Super Bowl with a team that was -3 in turnover differential. Let's see Tom do that

@@francisdasta8646 I'm not trashing Mahomes. He's clearly had an amazing career. My point of contention is that Pro Bowls are a useless measure of greatness. You simply cannot argue McNabb was better than Brady, Aikman, Kelly, and others. It doesn't pass the eyeball test.

@@erikfast4228 I agree Pro Bowls kinda a joke. My point is that Mahomes is a better football player than Brady. Brady gets a ton of accolades for team success, longevity and frankly just being about the luckiest player ever
