What I love about Tuca and Bertie is how it manages to be adult without being cruel and disgusting. A lot of failed adult animated shows automatically assume that they have to be vulgar and dark. Tuca and Bertie is the opposite. It deals with serious subject matter without being mean and I think that is it succeeds.
@drawnwithlove34993 жыл бұрын
This is what I'm saying. I'm always so tired and bored of adult films and shows that think they always have to serious and dark in order to mature, it ends up looking disgusting and boring. Films like Because of Winn-Dixie (which is arguably a kid's film, but hear me out) showed me that your film doesn't have to be serious and boring to seem adult. You can be fun, light-hearted and wholesome and still tackle deep subject matter, as long as you do it right.

I'm absolutely with you. I just finished watching the show today and watched all 10 episodes in one go. I love how *Tuca and Bertie* bares similarities with *Bojack Horseman* but doesn't let that be its only defining quality. It's freaking weird and strange and quirky and I love how it embraces that and just runs with it. Even though it's more light hearted than its "cousin", it's just as relatable. Hell, I connect so much to Bertie's anxiety where she just worries about random sh*t non-stop even if she knows it's nonsensical and how there are days were she just panics about everything. Or how Tuca is berated for being irresponsible and isn't capable of taking care of herself (there's been times where I've been a bit like that.) Ugh, this show is SO good!
@mintyhippo81254 жыл бұрын
I like watching these different perspectives of the show. Especially the part with pastry Pete. I watched one about how molestation affects people in adulthood, and about how that really influenced her relationships with Pastry Pete and speckle. I think it is def more than just a power dynamic to move her up in the bakery world. I think it has to do with a lot of things. Bertie has anxiety about how she looks constantly, was abused, and was oddly turned on by her experience with Pete. That def is more than just wanting to move up, in my opinion. She probably felt powerless in that circumstance, and mentally believes that power dynamic equals being sexual

The main issue i had with the show was that it's too...fast? It felt like Adult Jhonny Test with how little it would let certain topics and ideas sink in before being quickly addressed and either fixed or ignored. It sometimes feels kind of handwave-y with some serious issues (like opening up about being raped) getting solved from one mini-speech from Tuca. Besides that i do really like how they don't go hard on the misery porn of it and keep reminding you of how the characters, while flawed, deeply care about each other. Even Draca which is supposed to be setup as ms. Terious amazonian lady just genuinely likes Tuca and wants to help. It's a really good message nowadays where most flawed characters tend to always be about their flaws instead of helpful and loving despite of them (which, I feel, tends to lead to more people growing up expecting kindness from strangers to be a rarity that de-motivates them from trying)

@@Johnny2Cellos I've watched and rewatched it! I love the more abstract parts if the show, i feel like they not only enhance the comedy but also does a lot to help convey how the characters are feeling in ways beyond how words could, and it really makes it worth a rewatch to catch all the jokes. And I have to say, as a woman who loooooves animation with adult themes, I really have always wanted more of them that deal with adult issues and comedy with a more feminine touch, not that that should make it any less enjoyable for anyone of any gender, I just think you can feel the female writers' personal voices and experiences in how the show is written and especially in the dynamic between Tucaand Bertie. Maybe that's just me though 😝 I just found this show deeply relatable in really serious topics, especially Bertie and her anxiety, but also hilarious and absurd the whole time. One thing I love about this show is how season 2 built on Bertie's attraction to Pastry Pete. So like after Pete puts her in that uncomfortable situation, we know that Bertie's almost immediate reaction was to masturbate, because while it was uncomfortable, the situation was also arousing for her. Then in season 2, we see this built on further with Pastry Pete appearing in her fantasies and dreams, and Bertie then discussing this with her therapist and Speckle. So it went from Bertie having a crush on her boss, to the crush clouding her judgement and preventing her from seeing that she was being treated badly, to actually being part of a psychological pattern that she is now working on recognising and accepting as part of her recovery.

I feel like a big part of Tuca & Bertie's poor reception was because of BoJack and all the expectations people had for it to be just like it, but of course it isn't that at all, and people didn't like it much for that. Tuca & Bertie is far more stylized, and it embraces it's cartooniness far more, like you said. It's great in what it does, even if not everyone might take to how that is, it really does do it's own thing full on, and I admire how much they embraced everything they were going for. Undone is a far more accurate successor to BoJack, for one, it actually has the same creator (and not just the same animation studio), and it has a far more similar feel to BoJack, even if it has a more fantastical and 'out there' premise. Regardless though, all three aforementioned shows are fantastic, and I'm glad they were all willing to commit so much to their ideas and methods of storytelling, it really helps them all excell.

Undone is really the brainchild of Kate Purdy though. RBW is more involved in it than he was T&B (though he did co-write the pilot of T&B with Lisa) but yeah I think Kate kinda deserves the bulk of the credit for Undone. Agreed here though, they’re a lot great shows and I’m excited that we’re getting more Undone and Tuca and Bertie

@@Johnny2Cellos - Ahh, my mistake, I hadn't really looked into it much on my own, so thanks for clearing that up for me. I'm really excited to see what both shows have to offer too, all the people behind them have done so well in showing their vision, it's amazing. Great that Tuca & Bertie got renewed on Adult Swim, this way they can even be a little more free in their expression as well as be safe from the fear of cancellation, at least more so than on Netflix. Regardless, I'm looking forward to everything the future has to offer.

Honestly the way they play with different animation styles and mediums makes it really beautiful artistically, while it tells vibrant and captivating stories. With relatable comedy and heart felt topics I feel it's what Adult cartoons should strive to be. Fun but still not afraid to push the boundaries of it's stories and medium! It saddens me so much when I see people shitting on every aspect of this show so quickly and just dismissing it entirely! :(

I’d say it’s down to earth, funny and the characters are likeable, I can’t help feel like it’s missing something thou, hopefully it’s there in season 2, whatever it is, still prefer Bojack couse it’s got bigger stakes and bigger eye opening moments

T&B is probably my favorite animated series, I love BoJack horseman a LOT but T&B has like some sort of weird special place in my heart. (For comparison it would be like a 99 to 100 lol) Still sad they cancelled the show, would have love to see what was next for Tuca and Bertie, what was going to happen with speckle's relationship, etc. And I really enjoyed your review, i just recently subscribed to your channel, the way you talk is nice and your videos are entertaining. I don’t know if you write scripts, but if you do they’re good)

So Tuca might be bi. That singer she kissed was a girl, and later she meets a lesbian coach who Bertie was friends with. They sleep at their house and, when the coach wakes them up, Tuca says “Damn, the one time I don’t sleep naked”
