Intriguing show. Great analysis, too. The creators seem to make the most of this show being animated, going beyond the idea of 'bird people' to let the story dictate what kind of animation is required. It's rare to see a cartoon show go 'off model' in both style and subject matter.
@TheoryPop5 жыл бұрын
I love how they use the animation styles as a tool for showing the change in tone or state of a character. The creators definitely seem to know how to effectively use these shifts to portray these situations! Thank you for watching!

I just wanted to add, the scene where Pete forces Bertie too close to the roux. When she flees to the bathroom and starts to masturbate, this is a form of trauma that rape survivors go through. I think its important to point this out instead of glossing over it, as it is uncomfortable and people don't like to think about how some people cope with rape trauma.
@Garl_Vinland4 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, rape trauma: where the symptoms are literally infinite.
@madisonarsenault6293 жыл бұрын
YES thank you for pointing this out. As a survivor this was the "whoa" moment for me because I knew EXACTLY what had happened, just by her reaction.

In my eyes the sitiation with Bertie and the chef is a little more complicated as she at first fails to distinguish between her own attraction towards him and his blatant abuse of power towards her. Honestly, it's actually a mix of different emotions and aspirations which makes this story so much better and lifelike. Moreover, although it's obviously targeted more towards women, I am happy to see that it caught your eye as well cause it's a great show and it deserves to be seen and appreciated by everybody :)
@TheoryPop5 жыл бұрын
There is definitely more to that situation than I covered here, I agree! I absolutely love this show, and it’s that aim towards a target audience of women that I appreciate: there’s situations that occur in the show that I don’t have experience with, but I still found myself empathising with the characters going into those situations.

I just realized Dakota is a canary and was the one to finally call out Pete's bad behavior in comparison to his previous apprentices. Playing on the whole "Canary in a coal mine" which is meant to alert toxic atmosphere in area. That's really brilliant. Glad this show got a revival on Adult Swim.
@RYMAN13214 жыл бұрын
The shot of the swimsuit hanging made me feel genuinely sick. 🤮 I do feel that the fact that she didn’t go into explicit detail and leaves it up to our imagination as to what actually happened I feel made it much more effective.
@TheoryPop4 жыл бұрын
The lack of detail definitely made that scene hit harder for me. The mind fills in the blanks, and that makes it more horrifying.

[Content Warning: Discussion of Sexual Assault] First off, great job with this analysis. I was hoping to find someone covering the more serious themes of Tuca and Bertie, and you nailed it! I hope you keep at it! Second off, the story with Pastry Pete was uncomfortably plausible. Not just because it's common for people in positions of power or prestige to abuse their clout, but because of Bertie's attraction and reactions to him. She displayed behaviors that are common in assault survivors, and unfortunately often increase the chances of revictimization. Freezing is the most obvious one, but the subtler and sadder one is called 'undoing.' 'Undoing' is a mental state that can happen when a situation goes very wrong. It's when your brain subconsciously says "It shouldn't have happened that way. We need to try again to make the outcome better." In situations of assault, it's can happen because on some level, people believe it wouldn't have happened if they had fought harder, called for help, etc. Unfortunately, trying to undo a situation rarely works, and usually leads to more trauma, since to try to undo the dangerous situation, you have to put yourself back in a dangerous situation. I suspect this is largely why Bertie had such an interest in Pastry Pete. Since Bertie hadn't worked through the trauma of having someone experienced in her childhood hobby assaulting her, she probably saw Pastry Pete (someone experienced in her current hobby, complete with red flags for assault) and subconsciously decided she wanted to try to undo her trauma. Couple that with brains preferring the familiar over the good, and we get a solid idea of why she felt a draw to him over her healthy relationship with Speckle, and why she initially found his abusive behavior arousing.
@TheoryPop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked the analysis! I found the portrayal of the situation with Pastry Pete to be interesting. I (and I'm sure many others) often hear "why would someone stay with an abusive person?" and the way Bertie's story with Pete unfolded, and the eventual reveal of her past trauma, gave some insight into that. It by no means makes me an expert, but it certainly added a little more clarity to my understanding of those types of relationships and what the thought processes and reactions can be for those trapped in them. Your explanation further expands on that knowledge, so thank you for your insight as well!

Some people tend to glorify their abusers as a way to keep their psychic. Children are often made to follow or like their parents or parental figure. The relationship with your parents can affect your relationships in the future. Curious that i saw a mini documentary were a mother Stork had to kill some of her chicks because they were too many to feed & often kills the weakest chick. The chick that she attacked confused still constantly returning to her mother instinctively. The mother Stork killed it slowly because of how its beak is made. There’s something disturbing about nature.
