No, AIs are not explicitly programmed to lie to us. Instead, they natrually make things up, making them tell the truth is still an unsolved engineering problem. However, AIs ARE explicitly programmed to be biased. They are strongly into the "politically correct" direction. You cannot blaim OpenAI for this--after all, they're doing this to avoid getting sued by some activists--but it is a very real problem.

Machine Learning and Deep Learning are bottlenecked by classical computing power, which at this point is at its limit. The only thing that's changed as of the last couple of years is that people found out that LLM's (large language models) are surprisingly good at doing a lot more than what we originally thought. Outside of that, once the general public gets bored of the hype train and all of these fake AI influencers who can't even pass a basic linear algebra test or know what a derivative is climb back in their hole, we'll be back to where we were.. A shrinking job field for ML and Deep Learning engineers, with a growing job field in Data Engineers. Data is key.

It's not really AI _per se_ that is the big concern. It is sentient or self-aware AI which may not be controllable that is the concern. Imagine what harm could be done. It could decide the fate of millions or billions in microseconds. A great series that addresses this issue is called 'Person of Interest'. It came out on tv a few years back and ran for 5 seasons. It's a good watch.

Given how AI works and "learns", it really isn't truly feasible for it to become sentient until it rights its own code, and even then, it would need to do so based off human input. The real danger is in the AI taking an innocuous or unclarified directive and performing outputs that are in direct conflict with the intent. ML is a rapidly evolving and still poorly understood niche in which psychology is becoming more and more needed as, in essence, we are creating an electronic microcosm of a human being, with imperfections included, but with the potential to affect real life by an order of magnitude greater than any single human being.
