You will still need a bit of basic fish keeping knowledge and understanding the nitrogen cycle and PH levels and how to cycle a fish tank etc to get the best out of the tank set up.

Thanks for this video pal, I'm setting up my own tanks now, very similar to yours. Iv been keeping some in a single smaller tank with a small pump and filter and the crabs love it but I have to do a water change just about everyday atm so it will be nice to get a proper setup going. Should be able to fill them up tomorrow and start 1st cycle. Do you have to top it up with fresh water occasionally to keep the salinity down?

yes 25% water changer every week

I am not having much success with the crab's peeling the same last year ,just wondering if you need to feed them while in the tanks so they grow and then peel excellent video very informative
@StarfishSeaFishing3 жыл бұрын
no need to feed them they feed of there yoke sacks when they molt the crabs have to be already in the first stage of the molt when added to the tanks and are ready when there backs start to lift
@briancollick7561 Жыл бұрын
many thanks for your reply what are the yolk sacks? are they the white sacks that are sometimes under the male /female sexual organs . I know on the female they are the eggs so do not collect them

Great Video Paul, very similar to the set up we have for our tanks but we went large scale and have 8 treys. Some great tips there and will definitely put them in to practice. Do you add any bacteria initially to the tanks to get the cycle started?
@StarfishSeaFishing3 жыл бұрын
yes mate at the start just to kick it off with the cycle and i let them run for a few weeks with a couple of water changes to keep it in check
@BanditFishingUK3 жыл бұрын
@@StarfishSeaFishing that’s exactly what I was told to do. Last year was our first year at it and it didn’t work at all. Learnt a lot more the past 12 months about the set up and the amount of Media we actually need to add to it. Where did you get the larger media balls from?

pretey much pete no need for protein skimmers etc as i am only keeping crabs and they are very hardy things to keep as long as the water is fresh a clean and well aerated they live quite happily still need to watch nitrogen levels ph etc thou just basic fish keeping water changes etc
@GILLNETTING13 жыл бұрын
Alright bud, good clear info on the crabs. What method would you use for sand eels, I have tried but failed badly. 😂😂.
@StarfishSeaFishing3 жыл бұрын
you can keep them in a aerated bucket for a few hours with not much trouble they will last longer in this type of set up as it is filtered and has loads of oxygen in the water but there very fickel to keep
@PiscatorUK-Fishing3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, do you not find the crabs start peeling really quickly in the tank or do you find it’s due to temperature change that make them peel, enjoyed the video mate👍
@StarfishSeaFishing3 жыл бұрын
yes that is the idea the vast majority will be frozen down for later in the year so i have crab on a daily basis ready to freeze if i want to keep then for fresh i will slow them down in the fridge in trays like everyone eles this method help me hold lots of crab i can go thou and freeze down quickly but they tend to only need checking two times a day i dont miss many but i do miss a few
@PiscatorUK-Fishing3 жыл бұрын
@@StarfishSeaFishing ok mate that’s what I thought, I tried them in a big bucket before just with an air stone and the majority of them peeled within a couple of days but wasn’t sure if it was due to the temperature

Nice mate, I'm thinking of farming my own crab ... how much will this setup cost to make and will it keep crab that's hard backs till they peel ? ... cheers 🍻
@StarfishSeaFishing3 жыл бұрын
the crabs i keep are in the very early stage of the peel so there just stating but not ready to use so i keep them in tanks till they are ready and starting to see their backs lifting, the cost is up to you or what you use you can not keep hard back crab they have to be in a stage of the peel hard backs will eat the peeler crabs
